  1. Jean in Newcastle : Thank you for your reply, But my wonder is how do make sure that the kid is able to read/write at certain grade level?? Arcadia : Good for you that you have some schools for your home language. Where can I find more info about international school for languages?? Our's is Indian languages so I am not sure if the schools have any classes as such. If there are any, I would be more happier. bibiche: Thank you... How nice to know your kid doesn't want to speak English....I encourage my kids to talk in our home language with friends who know it. Maybe I have to read a lot....I am just hoping for the best.
  2. SKL : thank you, but I think my kids school don't use Singapore math...If I introduce this, buying books online, doesn't my kid gets confused. I mean they have different method at school, my DS goes to abacus class(weekly once)?? I am not able to get to that links where the owner has posted regarding the books... Can anyone help me with this?? beishan: Thank you for your reply. May I know what you mean by telling "It is highly recommanded here' 'Here' in the sense in this forum?? if so where can I find it.(Sorry for asking as I am new to this forum)
  3. I am not sure, if my post fit in this group. My kids are introduced to 3 languages. Basically at home, me and my DH speak Language1, my parents and DH parents speak Language2. Our kids(age 5 and 7) are more exposed to language1 and these days they are picking up language2 too. I am trying to teach them how to write(the very basics) of language1. Since they are in school most of the time, my kids English is also better. I wanted to know how others cope up with home languages. I mean if you want your kids to read and write, since there is no schools which teach them(at least in my area CA,USA) Do you think kids will be able to read and write...since I am always put down by few of my friends telling they cant get the home language. I am wasting my time and energy.. At times I feel so as I don't talk to my kids in English and its only in our language...but still they keep talking to themselves in Eng. I literally have to keep reminding them to talk in our language...Inspite of not using English as a way of communication with them, they are so much caught up..I feel like a failure trying to teach them something which they are not learning?? I am putting some effort to read books in our language too(which is not very regular when comapred to English books) Any inputs or suggestion are needed for me.

  7. OneStepAtATime: Thanks to you once again... When he does his math he doesn't move around until he his done(or maybe very few times) so this mismatch is something that is worrying me...Does this mean he doesn't like reading stuff. We are bilingual at home and I speak in our language. Maybe I should try explaining in our language but I just read at a very slow pace, thinking he is understanding...He doesn't show this behaviour of running, playing with something in school or any classes where his teachers are present(like music, school) From yesterday I am getting lots of inputs..hopefully we will be successful. Thanks once again.
  8. beishan: Thank you, he joined a new school this year and before they started of with academics, all the kids were pretested(the new ones) with AR reading program and his teacher mentioned she put him in a little lower level than he is since she wants to make sure he finds it easier to read. I do observe that he is very much fine in school, listens to his teacher, and does what he is told( in fact techer has no problem with him..he is very GOOD BOY)...It's the problem I face at home...If his dad reads to him he is better when compared to when I read. Most of the time he jumps or keeps playing with a toy sitting beside me. OhElizabeth : Thank you for your suggestion. I did allow him to move, play while I was reading, but I realized later that he wasn't listening (when I asked him a question) As I already mentioned, audio books and comics are the one I haven't tried. I shall take him to the library and try to find few of this...I am very sure, he would like it initially. The problem is with consistent. Hope any of this would build up his consistent to read. In general how to select books?? Do you go with the same author, or same concept or somethign the kids like themselves. Since they havent been to library most of the time, how would they know what interests them and how to find it??
  9. Thank you once again One StepAtATime. I shall read that book soon and contact my insurance to know. Thank you so much that you are taking your valuable time and giving such minute detials. GLad I joined the forum :001_smile:
  10. Thank you for all your suggestions. I just opened an accoutn yesterday when I was on internet finding more suggestions for his reading and came across thsi forum. I signed up almost immediately...The first bbetter step I took. BethSchart: Thank you,I did try few magazines. but again his interest is always on and off.... His teacher is only concerned about reading done and she doesn't mind if its a magazine, comic etc. I think he would like comics as I haven't got him any till now. Will try them for sure.. Audio books I did want to try, but heard from someone that kids gets used to listen and wouldn't put efforts to read by themselves. So this was one reason I avoided audio books... OneStepAtATime : Thank you for your detailed explanation. I would talk to his teacher soon. I have place a hold for this "Mislabelled Child " book and hopefully it shows more ways for me. I wonder how to proceed with assessing him in learning issues. Will this be covered by insurance?? If not, any idea how much would it cost and where should I go??? Thank you for so many details which I wasn't aware of. beishan : Thank you, he is in 2nd grade(he is Feb born) At school they have AR program and he started of with level 2.6. W got his eye checked up which was fine(it was normal check-up) Hope your kid does better with those glasses and thank you for your list. NYmomof4: Thanks you, since most of the time I go to library as its close to my work, my kids have accompanied me very few times. I shall try to get him more often to library and ask him to check out books which ever he likes.
  11. Hi, My kids are 7 yrs and 5 yrs old. I have ben reading them on and off earlier but past 6 to 8 months...I am reading to them on daily basics. But the problem I see is my son who is 7 yrs doesn't sit in place and doesn't look at the book most of the time. He is either playing or distrubing his younger sis. I borrow the books from library when I come from work and I get the books which are recommended for thier age or little higher. He has hardly made any effort to read all those books. It is myself all the time reading, when I ask him ot read he reads few sentences and tells me to read. I dont mind reading but what makes me feel bad is, I take time to search for those books and get them and read to him but hardly he pays attention. At times, when asked him to stop playing, he told he would be listening and I countinue with reading. After some time I just asked sometime from the book, he is not able to answer and I realize he wasn't paying attention. Thankful his sis has changed who was even bad to him and now she sits with me for nice picture books. After hsi school started he is supposed to submit a log for book reading from Mon to Thursday (about 10 mins/day) this did help initially but now he is not really caring about it. Last week he did only 20 mins and he is fine... Is he doing so since I read few levels higher?? He still likes picture books...And what should I do to him to make him sit and listen if not he read by himself.??? The way how I select books is it fine or what would you suggest?? Please help me. Thanks.
