  1. Could someone help me figure out how to approach using Grammar Island? How long should I take to go through this book - it kind of seems like we could do it in one day - but I'm sure that is not how it is intended. What is a good schedule/approach to using this system (the entire Grammar Island pack). This is my first time ever using a packaged curriculum, and I didn't do too much research on it before I bought it. DS is five, a fluid reader/speller/writer (type-not handwriting yet). All thoughts, ideas, suggestions welcomed, as I am new to homeschooling and have no idea how to really "run" a day!
  2. ErinE, that is actually super helpful! Thank you so much. Just knowing how much to ask for approximately is a big leap!
  3. Hello, I am new to this forum, and new to homeschooling this year. I have a DS5, who is academically advanced, but lags behind on writing. Actually, I think he is just average for writing for a "K"er. We have been using HWTears for the last few months. Mainly, I am just wondering how much writing to expect of him. How much can an average 5/6 yr old write and for how long until hand hurts? He has a strange grip, (I do too), and we are working on fixing that. We only do one page (one letter) in the HWT 2nd grade book a day. He also writes on a white board during day, but that doesn't seem to bother him as much as the structured writing practice - which he balks at most days. I am just looking for advice as to how much writing is usual for a 5/6 year old, both in terms of time wise and how many sentences in one sitting. Thanks! SN
  4. I am more than a little worried right now, as our DS5, who ought to be starting K this month (but isn't) is starting out with Singapore Math 4A and knows everything in both books, A and B. I think the only thing that DS hasn't ever done is dividing with decimals. I was knew DS was ahead, but for some reason, I though that once we hit 4th grade, things would slow down. But looking ahead at what is covered in 4,5,6th grade, I fully anticipate that by the time he would enroll in first grade, he will be through with 6th grade and I guess ready for Algebra/Pre-Algebra? I am a little overwhelmed and don't know what path to take. My current plan (changing daily - it seems) is to compact 4/5/6th in Singapore, but have him work through all the challenging problem books. I am thinking this will take about a year. (He worked through all of third grade, not using Singapore though, in about six months.) Can any one else on the same trajectory help me know how to plan for the future. What do I do with a 6 year old who will be ready for Algebra if he continues at this pace?
