  1. My first post, although I've been lurking for a few days! I have a question on whether I should be pulling back a bit. My 3.5yo DD is reasonably bright, has taught herself to read CVC words and has a huge receptive vocabulary, and I'm a little worried I've been expecting too much of her because of that. She loves being read to, we read 10 or more books a day, but I've been wondering for awhile how much she's actually understanding in the books we read. She'll sit with me and stay engaged in everything I open, I've actually started reading James and the Giant Peach to her (as much for my own enjoyment as hers, haha) but even with simpler books, around the level of The Gruffalo or Frog and Toad, when I ask questions (How do you think Toad's feeling? Why do you think he's sad?) she'll make up an answer composed of words from the last sentence we've read, which usually has nothing to do with the real answer. Am I pushing too hard, and should I go back to the level of story I know she understands? (Martin Waddell books are still favorites.) Maybe it's ridiculous of me to worry, but is it typical that a child her age wouldn't be able to understand that level of story?
