  1. I have never thought about it, we just do what we want. Although I have found I prefer going to museums and the zoo in the early afternoon to avoid school groups. I even take my kids to the y during the day. There are lots of private schools and homeschoolers in my area and they are all on differing schedules. It's only our first year but we haven't had questions other than people making small talk.

  2. I've done Color Me Rad. It isn't really like a typical 5k, our course was little short, lots of people were walking. There were stations every so often and you were sprayed with color (they used sprayers like you'd use to spray your grass), you could avoid the station if you wanted by staying toward the middle. They also passed out packets of powder and after the race everyone threw it in the air. They also played music so lots if people were dancing.

I have blonde hair so I kept it covered, the color came off my skin fairly easily. It did permanently stain the shirt I was wearing, and I had gotten sprayed with lots of yellow and green so it ended up looking brown.

I did it with a group of people including an 8 year old. I think kids would have a lot of fun.

  3. Bible Gateway used to have a NIV 1984 version, but they removed it recently too.  I still have my hard copy (and a couple others).  The updated version is very, very different.  I've already had my son start memorizing verses from the old NIV, but I think I'm going to switch versions just to make it easier for him when he gets older.  Our minister usually uses the ESV now, but sometimes he also uses the NLT.

  4. We've always done mulch but I want to switch to rocks this year too. We have drainage issues so I'm hopeful it will help with that and also control weeds better. I think rocks tend to come and go as a trend. When I was a kid everyone used lava rock and now you never see it.

Unless MIL lives with you or is paying for the landscaping I wouldn't worry about what she thinks.

I haven't seen the doctor for this. I have a high deductible insurance plan and can't afford the office visit.

If you are in the US and you honestly think it's from sitting at work, check to see if you qualify under workers comp.

If it does you may also qualify for an ergonomic survey where they can set up your desk, chair, and computer properly. I used to work in HR with workers comp and was always surprised at how seriously they considered this issue.

  6. My 4 and 6 year old have been using them for a couple months, they have a lot of fun with them. My 6 year old is better at problem solving when one doesn't work correctly, part of that is his personality and part of that is age.

  7. Do you also have to get over your fear of mice or rats? (serious question)

Not a farmer but I lived and worked on a dairy farm in college. The mice were kept under control by several cats. I did develop a major fear of raccoons though. The raccoons loved the corn silage and would make nests in the barns where they could get to the food more easily. I hated having to bring up the cows when they had slept in the barns at night, the coons would try to scare me off by hissing at me, especially if they had babies.
  8. Gymboree has some skinny jeans right now that seem extra long to me. You could maybe get a size smaller and have the right length. I'm not sure if they are extra long but I keep having to cuff them for my daughter and I don't usually have that issue.

I can usually find slim fit pants for my son at the Children's Place website, not sure if they have them for girls though.

  9. There is not a huge leap between essentials b and 1a. I never used the linking cubes, I can't remember if we did Legos instead or it I just used c rods. I think your son would be fine going straight to 1a, especially if you don't mind taking your time.

My 5 year old whipped through essentials a and b in 3 months. I've been going slower through 1a, he's been down to the last unit for over a month but I was concerned about his facts to 10. I skipped ahead, finished the book and went back to the addition/ subtraction to 20 section. His facts are still not real strong, it feels like a developmental block so I've been doing lots of Miquon, Education Unboxed games, and xtramath with him. After 6 weeks or so of that I finally feel like he's ready to finish the book. I think the HIG is really helpful.

There was a post similar to this back in the fall, if you can find it that may be helpful too.

  10. The story of Robin Hood had been mentioned in a couple of different books we have recently read. My kids also watched the Disney version last week. My 6 year old has requested to read the original story but there are so many versions, is there a particular one that I should try to find?

  11. When people find out I stay at home with my kids, "I wish I could afford to do that". Well, we made a lot of sacrifices.

My son has a clogged tear duct, "why is he crying?" or "he has something in his eye". Yes, I know, the last 30 people who looked at him told me.

This doesn't really bother me but my husband and I chuckle about the fact that when I'm out with our 3 kids people tell me I have my hands full. When my husband is out with them he's told he's such a good dad.

  12. We bought our house a year ago, we had separate relationships with our lender and our realtor.

We had a conventional loan and the buyer wanted to close in 30 days. Our lender told us that would not likely be possible due to tighter banking regulations, we ended up going for 45 days. We used the same lender (although he was with different banks) for both our previous and current house. When we bought in 05 it was easier to close quickly.

I'm sure you are now obligated to continue with this realtor but could you possibly request to deal with someone else in the same agency?

  13. Great tip on the printer and paper. We've been wanting to switch to a laser printer.

Add up what you plan to buy, then double that.

This year, my curriculum expenses are expected to be a little under $700 for 3 kids (K, 2nd, 5th). That's buying new. We have zoo/aquarium/science-center memberships each year. I don't do a ton of field trips, and the ones I usually do are free, so I have no idea what I spend on those each year.

Paper is FREE. When Staples runs their free-after-rebate deals on paper, my DH stocks up (with my teacher card!). We have so much free paper that we gave a bunch to my church, gave a case to a friend, have about 3 more cases in my garage, and a handful of separate reams hanging around. If you live anywhere near a Staples, there is no reason to pay money for plain printer paper. I also use a laser printer (Brother 2270DW), with generic toner that cost $11. I got 4000 pages on my name brand toner (that was $44). Don't know if the generic will live up to that, but it is high yield (rated 2600 pages), and I print using the toner save mode almost all the time. The printer was around $80, though you can sometimes get it cheaper. Watch for sales at Staples, Newegg, and Amazon. I think we got ours at Staples with a coupon code while on sale, so I probably paid more like $60...

Other school supplies... I stock up on notebooks during before-school sales. I also buy mechanical pencils in bulk. And get crayons and color pencils during sales also.

  14. I asked 3 friends this question last summer, all three have 3-4 children similar ages. One said $300 per year, one $300 per month, one about $500 for the year. The one friend had 4 kids in a co op which makes her expenses higher.

I've spent under $200 for kindergarten this year and part of 1st for next year plus a few things to keep my younger kids busy. That includes things like maps, reference books, and my own copy of WTM. That does not include our zoo membership or trips to art/ science museums.

  15. I second the Education Unboxed videos.  My 4 year old is dying to do real school, so she participates whenever I do one of those activities.

I definitely think he can tell you the answers orally or give him number cards so he can select the answer.  His handwriting will come around.  I was having my son do xtramath and couldn't figure out why he wasn't getting answers right that he knew.  It turns out finding the numbers on the keyboard was too hard, so now we have him tell us and we type it.  He had a big jump in correct answers and is now progressing at a reasonable rate.
