  1.

    Black Beans with Yellow Rice

    Ingredients (you can use
    ):

    1 1/2 cup chopped onions

1 cup diced green or red pepper

    1 cup diced carrot

    1 tbl. chopped garlic

    2 teaspoon ground cumin

1 can tomatoes (I used stewed tomatoes)

1 can (19 oz) black beans or equivalent amount cooked from scratch

    1/c cup water

1 tbl seeded and minced Jalapeno pepper, or to taste

    3/4 teaspoon ground tumeric

    1/4 teaspoon ground cumin

    2 3/4 cup water

1 1/2 cup rice (basmati is good)

    Salt to taste

    Directions:

Saute veggies in a little water until they are golden, about 10 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and cook for 30 minutes or longer.

Combine spices in a skillet and heat over low heat until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add water, rice, and salt. Bring to boil, and cook until rice is done (15 minutes for white, about 40 minutes for brown). Serve beans over rice, with some chopped cilantro and yogurt optional.

To clarify, you cook the rice in a seperate pot from the beans.

  2. I'm starting The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Finished The Help last night.

Just finished The Book Thief last week - couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed The Help, too!

I finished The Girl Who Played with Fire this morning for the first week, and as it was a rather brutal book, I've decided to go with a non-fiction this week and I started The Celtic Realms: A history of the Celtic peoples from pre-history to the Norman Invasion.

I devoured the The Girl... books - loved all three of them.

I use goodreads.com to keep up with my list but have been trying to blog more.

I don't know if I can commit to one a week because I'm normally reading 3-4 at a time... hmm. I'll have to see.

ETA: Now that I have seen the original thread I'll choose The Band of Brothers for this week.

  3. I look forward to the OP explaining it a bit more but I'm confused?

MFW uses SOTW in RTR, EX1850 and 1850MOD.

I did not know that MFW used SOTW at all. My son is in 2nd grade. We are on the second book of MFW. I thought when I decided to continue with MFW (because we liked it last year) that I would just be able to skip the history part - but as we got into it I realized that if I'm not doing the history in MFW then I wasted my money on MFW, period. It's mostly history. I don't want to do MFW history, it's horribly boring.

My son is the oldest in the family.

So are you saying I got the wrong program? Sorry, and thanks, this is only my second year HS'ing and I'm still struggling.

  4. I've moved more this year to WTM and MFW is just not doing it for me. It is mostly American History - and we are on SOTW Vol 2. But... I really like the Bible verses, etc.

Has anyone moved from MFW to something else? Any tips?

    Right now we are doing:

    Sotw

    FLL

    WWE

    Singapore Math

God's Science with another teacher every Friday

  5. I did 1A with my son last year and had no idea I was supposed to use a textbook AND a workbook. I thought they were one and the same, yes you can laugh.

So I'm getting ready to start this year and noticed the workbook notations at the bottom of the pages. I went to homeschool classifieds and bought the 1A "workbook" and when it came it's the same as the textbook.

    Can someone please help me?
