Actually, in theory, it's not. It's paying for the general education of the populace who cannot educate their children themselves (either through private school, tutors, or homeschooling) for whatever reason (usually because of a need for both parents to work; perhaps because of a lack of education of the parents). (In theory, of course. Nowadays public school is used by plenty of people who don't really *need* its services.)

I'm all for donating a part of my income to give future American voters a chance to learn to read, who otherwise would not have an education.

If it were not for public schools, I simply would not have gotten an education. Both my parents worked. While PS is not ideal (especially not anymore) it is, in theory, a way to help ensure the voting populace has enough education to rule itself wisely.

Great point. I have never completely thought of it this way - and I like it. Thanks for a great perspective!

  2. I want to thank everyone for all the posts on various threads about taking it easy with our little ones. They have really encouraged me to take things slowly. I was worried that she didn't grasp things yesterday as well as I had hoped, but after reading posts last night I decided to take a deep breath and not worry about it. And you know what? This afternoon she started quoting our memory verse of the week on her own! :) I'm so happy. She's now happily cutting and pasting ... and making a number one out of paper ... all on her own (it's free craft time after table time). I'm so happy ... and just wanted to say thanks to all of you who have gone before me. You are truly a blessing!

  3. Enjoy! What are you using?

    Blessings,

    Lisa

Doing OPGTR, Activities and Bible lessons from MFW-K, and other activities around those ... colors, shapes, etc. Going to go slow! No need to rush things. My main goal this year is to get in a habit of doing school, and to get her reading. She knows her letters and is constantly picking up her books to 'read' them. So, let's try and get her to actually read them! :)

  4. Tomorrow is my dd's first official day of preK. I know it's just the beginning, but I'm really happy that we are going to officially start! I've known for so long that we were going to homeschool. I'm just really happy it's here! She's excited too. In fact, she asked if we could 'do school' after dinner tonight! :)

Here's to tomorrow! Wish us luck.
