I did put them in the order ... but there are ones that are extra in the 'blue' set, and ones that are just plain missing ... like the one about the unification of upper and lower ... nowhere to be found in my set! I'm going to take the whole set tomorrow in to CC and see exactly which ones are missing for the whole course. Then I'll let you know! :)

Ok, I think I messed up on something, but I need to know if I can fix it economically. I bought 2nd hand a set of VP cards ... all the colors that were listed in the book. I had them laminated, cut them out ... all ready to go for CC! :) Good thing, right?
well, I got to the first day, and realized the cards were different from what was being reviewed in class. It seems I now have the 2004 set of cards. The first 5 were the same, but the next three were missing, and I had some other cards that were no where to be found in my tutor's set.
My question is ... can you purchase single cards? I haven't checked all 5 sets of cards yet, but I'm wondering if there are differences in all the sets, or just the blue/purple one?
Anyone had any experience with this? Thanks!
BTW, we LOVED the first day of CC!

Thanks bunches. I don't want to overwhelm her - and definitely don't want to confuse her! Or me! :)

I had decided to go with Rod & Staff math for my dd because of the thoroughness of the program. Lately I have been introduced to MEP, and am wondering if they would be cohesive together? Would MEP be a good supplement to R&S? Something a little more colorful and lively? Or would they compete with each other too much? Thanks for your input!

They changed the CDs that much? I found a cycle 2 CD set at a used book sale last week - and got them. Was that a mistake? I didn't spend much at all, so I'm not worried about the $$. I'm just surprised I guess that the audio part has changed that much. How much will access to the forum be after I'm 'registered and paid'?

How much of a difference is there? I was given a 2nd edition and am wondering if it would be ok, or do I need to get the most recent edition. We are joining a group for the first time in the fall. My dd is 4. We are very excited!!! :)

I'm so sorry about this being a basic question ... but I'm a little confused. I'm going to be joining a CC group this fall. As a parent - not a tutor. If I am part of a group, how much would the monthly subscription be to the forum? And am I correct in understanding that we don't need to get any CDs then from the website? We can get all the music songs and other files from the forum? Thanks for clarifying! :)

How can you get on the list to get flyers/catalogs? And where do I go to order with the sale? Online? Over the phone? Thanks for your help!

I didn't know about these either. Would they help me as the parent, when I go to use SOTW with my dc?

So, it's not really a negative reflection on Rod & Staff ... but just that there's something better out there. Right?
Thanks for answering seemingly simple questions. Sometimes I overthink things and get myself into trouble! :)

Just curious ... if I'm planning on using R&S grammar from level 3 on up (as suggested in WTM), why wouldn't I start with level 1 and go all the way? Is there a reason? Has anyone used the whole program and skipped First Language Lessons?
Thanks!

We did SOTW 4 in 4th and 5th grade--which worked out really well, in that we were able to focus on the 19th century pretty much exclusively in 4th, saving the 20th century for 5th grade when ds, who's fairly sensitive, had a year's more maturity. (And he loved our 20th cent. studies at that point, was absolutely fascinated with WWII, the invention of flight, the space race, etc.) Keeping our study to the 19th cent. in 4th allowed us to focus in a fair amount of detail on the Civil War, Gold Rush era, the westward expansion, Teddy Roosevelt (ds adores TR) and inventions (Edison, etc.). It was a great year, and I was able to find a large amount of age-appropriate fiction and nonfiction to support 19th cent. history studies.
It really is totally doable to structure SOTW 4 in a way that doesn't horrify the sensitive child.
I was wondering if you could take 2 years to do SOTW 4. It seems like such an important time period - both in world history and American history. I would think we could take 2 years easily, couldn't we? If so ... do you think only going through the history cycle 2 times during school would mess the kids up much? I love the idea of going through 3 times, but it just seems like so much information!

Thanks so much for all of your help. I still have so much to learn! :)

I'm trying to plan out my kids' curriculum plan over the next few years (yes, I know they'll probably change ... but indulge me anyway! :) ). I had always planned on following TWTM suggestion of SOTW, but have been told by good friends (who I respect their methods) that MOH is an excellent history program. Do they correlate in regards to cycle? Scope? Intensity? History is NOT my strong suit, so I'm looking forward to learning along with my kids. Also, what age would you suggest starting these programs? I will be finishing up preK and starting K soon - is that too young? Or should I wait until 1st? Thanks so much for your advice ... this board is invaluable to me! And my family!

:iagree:
I always thought Challenge was expensive also, but this year I've reconsidered. I've spent a LOT of time trying to find supplemental classes for my 6th grader, either online or on-site--and they're typically $400-$500 for a good middle school class per semester.
If you take just one subject--math or latin for example--and add up what it would cost you to have a weekly tutor for that subject all year, it will easily add up to $500 or more. Also, the debate and rhetoric opportunities are impossible without a solid, organized group.
If you get a good group, I think it is a fair cost now that I've had experience looking at the alternatives.
Could you offset the $$ by tutoring a Foundations class? IMO that would be a much easier investment of your time rather than starting your own 'Challenge-type' group. If there's a CC in your area, you might want to check into that option. You only have to prep an hour or so a week for that, and tutor only 2 1/2 hours!
Does anyone know how much tuition runs for the Foundations program? We've just been introduced to CC ... and I'm going to an open house on Monday for my 4 yo. I'm intrigued by it, but didn't see anything on the CC website about tuition. Is it worth it for a younger one?

There's more ... maybe not on the boards here, but I know of a couple more for sure!

Yep ... Bartlett area here!!! Just really getting started, but looking forward to the journey!!!! :)

Me too ... me too ... count me in for wanting a list! This is GREAT that you are doing this. Thanks!

I guess I should have added that I was TONS of pictures and will end up with SEVERAL (meaning LOTS) of albums by the time I get everything finished. I don't know if this makes a difference - but I do need albums that hold a lot of pages. I would like to try to do an album for every calendar year.
-
Thank you all for your opinions ... I'm still not sure what I'm going to go with. Hobby Lobby has their albums 50% off starting tomorrow, so I would like to get one this week. Hopefully I can decide by then! I guess it's not the end of the world if I make a decision that's ends up being different than what I stick with. I just prefer to go down the 'right' path from the beginning!!!

I'm just starting scrapbooking and don't actually have an album for the 12x12 pages I have finished. One of my friends swears by strap hinge (she says they lay flatter) but in the stores there seems to be an abundance of postbound, which suggests they are more popular.
Which should I chose? What are the advantages/disadvantages of both?
Thanks for the help!!!!

Anyone ever used this program? I saw the program geared for 4-6 year olds in a local store, and was wondering if it was worth trying. Any experience with it - good or bad?
-
I agree with previous poster. Keyboard should come first if possible. The ability to read music - on both clefs simultaneously - enhances all music down the road. They will learn music as a language ... it is great to do this early! (I am classically trained since 5 ... it was the BEST thing for me!)
As far as dance/gymnastics, my sister who has two girls your age, has had them involved in both. When I posed this same question to her for my daughter, she without hesitation said she would pick gymnastics over ballet. The athletic abilities her girls have learned have been invaluable - again providing a great basis for other sports/dance/etc in the future. Of course, if they hate either of these, then it's not a good idea! But if they're willing ...
Good luck on your decision ... I have had to make some of those lately myself for my dd ... it's not easy. You want to do the right thing for your little ones!
What do you say when people ask you...?
in K-8 Curriculum Board

I know this is an old post, but I have to give my latest experience. My dd, who is in preK (but doing some K work) was asked where she is going to school. Her response - "at the kitchen table! But sometimes we go to school on the couch." Priceless! :)
