  1. We pretty much always keep the same stuff on hand and my pantry is always stocked with spices, pastes, etc.

When I'm on my game (which I'm not right now), we have a theme for every night of the week:

Monday - Throwback (stuff we ate as kids in the 60s-70s

    Tuesday - TexMex

    Wednesday - Asian

    Thursday - noodles

    Friday - pizza

    Saturday - "free square"

    Sunday - slow cook

So I have some framework for each night, but it's variable. Monday might be meatloaf or chicken pot pie. Tuesday could be tacos (chicken, beef, steak, fish) or enchiladas. Wednesday may be stir fry, curry, or tandoori chicken. And so forth.

It's easier for me to think in that framework when I'm shopping or pulling stuff out of the freezer.

We do something similar to this, except for throwback Monday - but I love that idea and will start incorporating it! I subscribe to a meal planning service and pick and choose a few that sound good each week.

This time of year, almost every dinner starts with a big salad on more than half the plate, then we usually do:

Texmex - change salad to taco salads or have a small burrito or taco on the side

Asian - cold noodles with lots of veggies and tofu, stir fry, curry, etc

    Italian

Burger night - various veggie burger recipes

Mediterranean salad - chickpeas, olives, grape tomatoes, cucumbers and pita on the side

sandwich night - the meal plans I use have a ton of sandwiches in them, so we pick a yummy sounding one and have that with salad

    leftover night/take out night

Winter involves a lot more casseroles, soups and stir fries.

  2. I would see a psychologist initially- they are trained to diagnose, while a master's level therapist is not. S/he can refer you to a specialist or psychiatrist if warranted.

I would suspect some ADHD given your description.

That's not entirely accurate - licensed master's level therapists diagnose all the time. That's exactly what they went to school to learn how to do. They're trained in the DSM, making treatment plans, etc. My husband is a therapist and I'm quite familiar with his training and what his license allows.

OP- a licensed therapist or Psychologist that specializes in adolescents would be your best bet. Many just take adults, but there are definitely ones who specialize in helping children and teens. Good luck!

  3. Mine is pretty little still, but he has played on the pbskids.org site, looked up trailers for kids movies on apple trailers, checked the weather. Oh and he'll use itunes to listen to songs if he wants to listen to music and his ipod is charging.

He has a 30 min limit of any kind of computer/kindle time a day.

No filter - he uses my laptop when he uses the computer and I'm usually in eyesight. For kindle, he uses kindle freetime, which is set up for his age group.

  4. Thank you for the helpful comments! I'm mostly wanting out of AAS again. I like it a lot, in theory. In practice, DS "gets" spelling quickly and I find myself either spending a lot of time on a lesson he instinctively understands or I skip through quickly and the curriculum is too expensive, in my opinion, to skip through so quickly. Similar issues with FLL, except the price point is much better. I think we were all dreaming about the definition of a darn noun at one point this year. I need to check out apples and pears since everyone seems to love it! Is it good for a natural speller?

  5. I set aside example work for our portfolios and scan them and create my portfolio on my laptop. One we get our approval from the state that we successfully completed our homeschool year, I toss everything and keep the pdf of the portfolio. Until we get the approval, everything we did over the year is in binders/folders on our homeschool shelf in case the state needs more info from us.

  6. I'm considering switching things up a bit next year and I've been reading such positive things about CLE here that I'm thinking about using it for grammar and spelling next year. However, I prefer secular curriculum in general. We're more UU type people, although I lean more liberal Christian - UCC. Is it a very Christian curriculum? Or is that more for the science piece?

    Thanks!!

  7. Cool! I'll send those over to you in PM when I've got my head back in the school game later this afternoon. (I'm supposed to be working right now but I'm doing a spectacularly good job of procrastinating instead)

DS goes to Accents School of Foreign Language once a week for French - it's in S. Burlington and I can't say enough good things about it if you're looking for something like that to do! It's been such a great year and I'm amazed at how much the kids learned this year - they offer Spanish too.

  8. We are starting 1st in the fall in Vermont. I am working on my course of study right now. trying to make plans for the portfolio easy at the end of the year.

What helped me over the past couple of years is setting aside work each month. So I've got math pages from each month and handwriting, etc. One thing I need to do more of is keep a log of all the books we read throughout the year. As we read and finish books, I think, Of course I'll remember this for the end of the year. Here we are at the end of the year and I'm trying to remember what we read!

I would advise not to put in too much for VT studies at once. I put in a ton last year and wished I had saved some for this year! I had pictures from Echo center, maple syruping, apple orchards, pumpkin picking, etc. :-)

Let me know if you want me to message you either my MCOS for 1st or our portfolio (once I finish it!). I'm happy to share.

Where in VT are you? We're just outside of Montpelier.

  9. Nevertheless, there is nothing about the NFL that is correlated with sexual assault. The Duggars promote themselves as the living, walking, talking, breathing embodiment of xian morals as found when applying the moral advice of the founding documents of the xian religion. When doing so they, like so many before them, inadvertently created the perfect storm in their own home. Sandusky didn't do anything inadvertently, and he didn't do anything guided by moral principles that he's peddling to the public for fun and profit. The idea that sexual assault and incest happens outside of xianity, or religion even is not contested. People might stop arguing that now. No one supports such an idea. I don't even support such and idea and my opinions about your religion have never been stronger.

All good points, but don't forget the biggest point.....Sandusky was tried and convicted and is now spending 30-60 yrs in jail for his crimes. No one is trying to minimize what he did. It's not an apt comparison at all. The question isn't "where's the outrage for Sandusky?" There was plenty at the time and he had his day in court and lost. For a time, his football team was stripped of all of it's titles as well, but that was eventually overturned.

I'll say it again (not to you albeto but to anyone else who is making this ridiculous comparison). SANDUSKY CANNOT BE COMPARED TO JOSH DUGGAR. SANDUSKY WAS TRIED AND CONVICTED FOR HIS CRIMES. DUGGAR IS BEING MADE OUT TO BE A MARTYR AND HIS PARENTS ARE TRYING TO MINIMIZE WHAT THEIR SON DID AND DEFEND NOT PROTECTING THEIR CHILDREN FROM FUTURE ASSAULTS. NOT THE SAME!!!!

  10. Next year I want to switch to a teacher evaluation for our year end assessment. VT requires 4-6 dated work samples for each of the items on their checklist. The 1st section includes reading, writing, math and it's also where we put any spelling, phonics or anything else related to "communication". The rest of the items shouldn't be as long!

  11. oh Lands End! I'm short, but have a long torso and their petite shirts cover my hips. They are made from really good quality material too and don't pill or shrink. I bought a couple of their long sleeved t's last winter and loved it so much I bought a few more. And I replaced my whole old navy/gap summer t shirt collection with lands end ones this summer and am very happy with my switch!

  12. Starting a charity to "help children" and then abusing those children is not hypocritical? Perhaps you define it differently then.

Lots of people create environments that increase risk factors. The Duggars are not unique in that regard. You seem to be looking at this emotionally rather than rationally.

I'm not defending the Duggars. I wish someone could throw the book at them.

    Both books.

Maybe the difference is is that Sandusky was tried and convicted to 30-60 yrs in prison for his crimes and the Penn State football team was also penalized as a result of the abuse. Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of sexual abuse and was sentenced to an (average) of 45 yrs in prison. Josh should have been convicted of 5 counts of sexual abuse, so maybe a 5 yr jail sentence for him would help to make things right.

  13. That's brutal!!! That the curric at the start of the year is all that counts at the end of the year. Yikes! What state are you in? I'm in PA and we have to give a brief (ridiculously brief) outline at the beginning of the year of what we expect to accomplish, but it doesn't have to match the end of the year at all.

I write things like, "To advance in mathematics." And that's it. As long as the boys learn a single new mathmatical fact, I've met my objective.

I'm in VT - technically we can change our curriculum plans, but we have to notify the home study office and let them know before we do so. Thankfully, after this year, as long as my portfolio gets accepted, I won't have to submit a course of study again until DS is 12. I had to attach scope and sequences for textbooks we used and write a bit about each subject. In VT, you have to cover Vermont studies each year as a homeschooler (even though they don't cover it yearly in PS), we also have to cover health including drug, alcohol and cigarette effects on the human body and on society as a whole (which is ridiculous, especially in the earlier grades). The minimum course of study takes up 4 pages in the VT homeschool guidelines. Blech.

Thankfully the women in the Home Study office are really nice and are former homeschoolers themselves. So they're pretty good about helping out when I call with questions.
