  1. I have a nasty summer cold and my brain is a little foggy. While cooking dinner tonight, I put a cookie sheet of potatoes in the oven and a couple  minutes later, put in another cookie sheet of broccoli. Without thinking, I moved the first cookie sheet over to make room for the second sheet. I think I was thinking that the first one was only in the 400 degree oven for a minute, so it couldn't have gotten too hot....

It did. And I managed to burn the tips of my thumb and three fingers. Ow. I don't think it's too terrible, but there are raised spots where my skin touched the pan and I managed to brand my thumb with the numbers on the edge of the cookie sheet.

What's your favorite burn home remedy? I've got an ice pack now, but am wondering if I should do anything more helpful than just numbing my fingers with ice?

    Thank you!!

  2. Since you have a mac, I'd recommend apple's Airport. The Airport Time Capsule if you can afford it. It's a great router, super easy to set up, never has glitches and it will act as a backup drive for your mac in Time Machine. I think it does it hourly. If you ever lose your hard drive, and need a new one or a new computer, you can transfer everything over to the new computer and it'll look just like the old one. We love ours.

  3. That sounds delicious!  Care to share the recipe?

    They were yummy!

    Preheat oven to 400.

    1 can chickpeas, drained

spread them out on a cookie sheet w/ parchment paper on it

spritz with olive oil and sprinkle on salt and garlic powder

Bake until they start to turn golden brown and they kind of pop when you bite into one.

Then toss in a bowl with dried oregano, chopped fresh basil (I used maybe 2 Tbsp), a couple of Tbsp chopped sundried tomatoes.

Coat with a bit of marinara sauce - maybe 2-3 Tbsp

    Top with parmesan cheese

I munched on them plain tonight, but I think I'll have them for lunch tomorrow over roasted cauliflower.

(sorry, I'm a terrible measurer when cooking!)

  4. DS goes through varying degrees of pickiness. He's never liked avocado for some reason - even when he was a baby. It's easy enough to leave off of his serving, so I don't push it. In general, I made a decision to never make food a battle. I cook meals, I try to have something everyone likes in the meals and DS is free to get a yogurt or make himself a pb&j if he tries and doesn't like dinner.

He's not super picky though - I'm not sure how I would handle it if he had a very short list of foods he was willing to eat. And he's always (so far) willing to try things, even if he's tried before and not liked them. I figure there are foods that I don't care for, and foods that DH doesn't care for, so DS is also allowed to have foods he doesn't care for.

  5. I know the hive is always helpful with these threads!

The food in question: unopened jar of sundried tomatoes packed in oil. Best by date: 3/16/15

I'm usually on the "throw it out" end of the spectrum, but I'm considering eating these. Pastene brand (not home canned), tight seal until I opened it a minute ago. Smell and look fine.

  6. We just bought our first new to us couch in the fall. Prior to that, we had hand me downs or a futon. I think it's considered good quality - got it from a nice furniture store in the area that was closing this branch. The couch was over $3k originally and we got it for about 50% off. The cushions already have more wear than I would like to see. A couple of the back cushions are noticeably squashy and aren't holding their shape. I've been very good about rotating seat and back cushions - about every week or 2, I rotate. We like to sit in the same spots, so I rotate them to try to get all cushions somewhat equal wear. I voted 1-5 because judging on how much it's aged in 7 months, I'm thinking we'll need a new one in less than 5 years. And we don't even sit on it all that much!

  7. It depends on how much water I drank close to bedtime. :-)

I'm probably about 50-50 sleeping through or waking up. DH works the night shift once or twice a week, so I'm always up at least once or twice on those nights because I can hear his pager from the bedroom. If I drink a glass of water too close to bed, I'm definitely up.

  8. If you're in VT, as your username implies, I get it. We spent 6 mo. scouring the market before we found an affordable house that didn't need lots of work. We're closing in 2 1/2 weeks. Hang in there. Something will pop up!

    Thank you everyone!

GrammarGirl - yup we are. Our biggest restriction is location. There are plenty of houses in terrible locations and even within the same area there can be a huge variation in the decent factor. And it can be hard to tell too in some cases. Our street could be seen as a crappy place to live because the houses aren't super nice. It's actually turned a few possible buyers away. But, what they don't know (until my realtor tells them!) is that they're the nicest neighbors we've ever had in our various homes and apartments. Vermont is tricky. We also have to stay in Washington county due to DH's job. One of the requirements is that he's in the county for his shifts. Day shifts are no problem, but he's home during the night shifts unless he gets called out.

We drove by 4 other possibilities yesterday and none of them would work. We'll keep hunting!

Congrats on your new place! :-)

  9. I just thought that I should prob say I have been depressed and really anxious. SO he does  have cause to be worried. When he said " how can I tell you I am worried without you taking it so personally?" because I started in on "look I am doing the best I can" I told him he could tell me what he would like me to do specifically. He keeps saying he is worried but what does he want me to DO with that?  I mean...specifically how can I ...change?

I think it sounds as if he was being very insensitive to your grief and, it's only been 6 months! :-(

Have you been to see a grief counselor yet? My mom really struggled when she lost her sister a few years ago and was having an increasingly hard time sleeping, socializing, her anxiety was getting higher, she was having a hard time not snapping at people, etc. Her husband struggled with dealing with it. Lots of times men want to "fix" things and when they can't, they get frustrated. He would get frustrated with her regularly, but in reality, he was frustrated with his lack of ability to make it better for her. Things slowly, but steadily started improving when she started seeing a counselor.

  10. We got a counter offer - they wanted us to remove the contingency that we needed our house to sell first. While we were discussing that (20 min), my realtor called to tell me they accepted one of the other offers. I'm bummed!

We actually spent the morning hunting online for other houses and there's nothing even close to as nice as that house in our price range. Grr.

  11. Keep us posted!

Our seller is being a little difficult on the negotiations; even his agent admits he wants way more than the house is worth. So we'll see. Hoping he's ready to finally move on and will meet us in the middle!

Sending good thoughts your way, Amanda!

Oh that does sound difficult! I'm surprised they're not taking their agent's advice on price. Hopefully they'll be willing to come down a bit on price.

We offered pretty close to asking price, but we're not willing or able to get in a bidding war, so we basically put our cards on the table and we'll see what happens.

Thank you - hope we both get good news!

  12. Thank you!! PeachyDoodle - hope your offer gets accepted! :-)

We found out a little while ago that there are two other offers in now too, which is potentially bad for us. Ours is contingent on our current house selling which may make the sellers a little hesitant to accept it. Still hoping though.

  13. We just saw the movie yesterday and apparently they like frozen waffles and cheesy puffs. Leave a trail of them going out the door!

We had a chipmunk in our house a few years back and that's exactly what I did (except with seeds) and it worked!  Left the front doors open and he munched seeds out the door. :-)

  14. We put an offer in on a house last night! We had been thinking about buying, then looked into building, then went back to looking to buy and we fell in love with a house! If you've got it to give - keep us in your thoughts and cross fingers for us. Thank you!!

  15. Please don't buy cheap paint!

It won't cover and you'll end up needing three or four coats of paint. Buy a really good paint that will cover in one or two coats, or if you get a good tinted primer to match the paint color, you might even get away with one coat of primer and one coat of paint. It's not worth skimping on paint. You don't save that much money by buying the cheap stuff and the amount of extra time you will spend putting more coats of paint on the walls can be significant.

Yeah, don't skimp on paint. I tried that with walmart paint and it was the most agonizing thing dealing with that paint. We ended up using 2 coats of good quality primer on the room that really needed repainting. See what the realtor says though, mine actually advised against going crazy painting. She said she's seen plenty of clients go out of their way to re-paint with a nice light neutral color, only to have the buyers immediately repaint. She said most people plan to repaint anyway, so don't go nuts about it. I painted the room that was in need - I had given up with the walmart paint and ended up painting a giant smiley face in the middle of the wall, so it really needed it! And I did touch ups in a few spots - like where a chair had rubbed against the wall a ton and left dark streaks on it.

  16. Well without giving too much info a way, lets just say I live awfully close to their headquarters so I suspect they pay a lot of attention to their stores around here.

We had them also where I lived in CT, but they weren't as nice, but their prices weren't as high either.  The expensive place where I used to live was Stop & Shop.

Price Choppers here is the bottom of the barrel grocery store. Dirty, bad produce section, etc.

I miss Stop and Shop!! We had a ton of them in RI, but none up here.

Shaws was the nice grocery store when we first moved here, but it's gone downhill a bunch since they were bought out by Albertsons a couple of years back.

Hannafords is really nice and the people that work there are always nice and super helpful. I've been told they're actually treated like humans by their employers, so that's good.

Trader Joe's is over a half hour away, but it's worth it for the price and quality. I usually get some stuff at Hannafords and the rest at TJ's.
