  1. I think to be fair, HR should anticipate all religious holidays and have a Rabbi, Monk, Priest, etc. on call to consult dietary needs during meetings. Maybe the Rabbi should personally cook the food?

Seriously, working in a large corporation, you need to stand up for yourself..... Not sit and fret if the HR manager is rude or not. Business is not about making friends ---- grow a thick skin. If the friend or you are upset, take the issue to your HR V.P or an officer in the company----though you will likely be labeled a trouble maker......just being honest.

  2. Well I'm definitely not a blogger, but I can certainly introduce myself. My name is Tracy and I live in Colorado with my husband of over thirteen years and my three children, my son, daughter #1, and daughter #2. My husband is my rock!! He's the one that brought up homeschooling and he is very passionate and supportive of the decision. Unfortunately, when I went through my tough time these past few days, he was out of town on business so my rock wasn't here to lean on and cry to. That's why I leaned on the forum! Ha Ha! I've been homeschooling all of my kids since they were in Kindergarten. I found TWTM a few years ago and instantly fell IN LOVE WITH IT!!! I don't do everything by the book, but I really like being given a guideline to follow. In addition to the kids learning here at home, they're also involved in a program at one of the local charter schools. The older two attend school one day a week where they're in a classroom setting with other homeschooled children, and they're taught LA along with spanish, art, and music. They love going to school and seeing all of their friends and their teacher, but they also love the fact that the rest of the time we're here at home. It's the perfect balance for us. My son is in 4th grade this year, my first daughter is in 2nd and my youngest daughter is in Kindergarten. She actually attends three mornings a week. She'll start attending one day per week when she gets into first grade next year. Let's see......what else? I've been lurking on this forum FOREVER so it's nice to finally get involved. It's just that you ladies have such amazing insight into things so I was always walking away with snippets on how to do things better here in my own home. Hopefully I can also give to this forum since I'm officially posting. Right now my kids are watching a documentary on the planets while I'm typing this, so I guess I'd better get into motion with our workday. That's pretty much it about me. If you have any questions, just ask. :001_smile:

Thank you for the wonderful formal introduction! No questions.... lol :tongue_smilie:

  3. I agree. When I read the OP, the first thing I thought is that I never lead with putting down the schools and claiming to like my dc more. Those are the reasons I think in my head, but don't say to anyone but other homeschoolers. ;) I still think she handled it badly, though, and would have un-friended her immediately.

I know. I just pushed back a little more than normal when she started to slam my choices. As I said, normally I wouldn't have said anything but I really felt attacked for no reason. We were actually talking about going to our local health club and doing yoga at 10am on MWF, and that was when I said that only Mondays would work for me since my kids were in school that day. She asked me why they're not in school all the other days (she KNOWS I homeschool) so when I told her why, she gets this ugly look on her face and starts asking all of these questions. Why would you even want to do that? I can't WAIT to get my kids out of the house. Are you using public school curriculum? I've never even heard of Shurley Grammar!!! Why aren't you using Saxon???? The questions just wouldn't stop!!! And then at the end of the conversation she says, in front of everyone, "I don't know why you do it. People that homeschool just don't think logically." That was when I told her my reasons. It was almost as if she wanted to demean me in front of all of the other women, so yeah, I guess I got a little fed up and fired back. But why, WHY do that???? She's always been a very strong personality type and I've never been that comfortable with her to begin with, but since she's a good friend of my aunt there are times when I have to be around her. I'm feeling much better today though. Thanks for all of the support! There are times in life when we experience conflict. It can't be avoided and I guess it's a good time to model how to handle the real world for your kids.

    Hi 3 ring,

I see this was your first thread. A lot of us "newbies" (those under 1000 posts I think) are unaware of some board semi-requirements (or expectations): Most want a Formal introduction from you in the beginning, it helps to defer to most of the regulars because they want you to understand their personalities I think, and many regulars want you to maintain a blog. I have understood that these are not "rules" so much as expectations.

  4. In Egypt we once ordered the "deluxe American burger" (choices were limited at the particular restaurant). We got 2 tiny burger patties, each of them had a fried egg on top and a slice of tomato on top of the egg. Sure, it made for a good story, but it was not really a taste of home.

That is why I wouldn't cook Indian. :D

Well at least they tried :D

  5. No, and it's working now. ;) It appears that you already corrected yourself, a few minutes after making that post:

But after that, when Parrothead quoted your original post and said it was incorrect (which it was), you didn't point to your follow-up correction, but instead said that she was going against papal teaching. I'm guessing that you can see how this might be confusing.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread. :)

Lol I think I didn't have my right blend of coffee either. Your right, I should have clarified after the parrothead rightly pointed out that I omitted the eastern orthodox. That's what I meant....easy for me to say. Lol.

  6. If it were me, I would consider it an honor to cook my husbands employees their native cuisine. Think about it.....if you were in India, wouldn't you appreciate a hamburger and fries?

For your dinner I would consider Sattu Parathas (parathas stuffed with fried chickpea flour) accompanied by Chokha (which is like a curry spiced mashed potatoes). Fish Curry goes well with most Indian cuisine. I wish you well and consider it an honor and an adventure!!!!!

  7. Maybe my coffee hasn't kicked in yet... but are you saying that Pope Benedict has used the term "Protestants" to describe the Orthodox?:confused::confused: I've never heard of such a thing, and would be interested to know what you're basing this on. Surely it would have made quite a flap in the ecumenical news if he had.

Here's a speech from 2006 in which he clearly makes the distinction:

Catechesis on the Week for Christian Unity

"Indeed, prayer 'for the union of all' involves Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants, brought together in different forms, times and ways by the same faith in Jesus Christ, the one Lord and Saviour. "

    :confused::confused::confused:

    I think I need a refill...

No I wasn't saying that. Apparently you are drinking decaf.

  8. I missed the thread earlier but I am also fairly new on this board but I do participate quite frequently. I have over 400 posts so I would still be considered low even though I have only been a member for 5 months. I didn't come on the board to just read, I jumped in right away. (I don't find fault in just reading, I just wanted to communicate and share with others)

I hope that people aren't nervous about me. I did go back and check my profile and I was surprised that 43 people had viewed my profile. I am curious why this is done? Is it because you don't feel that you "know" me yet or is there some other reason behind it?

I to love being able to come and post questions and gain insight from others. I have learned a lot and hopefully I have shared some important things with others as well. :001_smile:

I have not checked your profile....but now that you mention it I feel I must :D. Do you think having a high or low number of people who have checked your profile could indicate one way or the other whether or not you are real?

  9. So that I'm clear on this. . . .

    Catholics are NOT Protestant

any other 'genre' claiming to be 'Christ followers' ARE Protestant?

and to answer the original question. . . yes, I believe you can be a "Christ Follower" and not be a Catholic or Protestant. I also agree with AuntieM

Religions/denominations are man-invented. I believe a Christian can self-describe as a "follower of Christ" without being categorical. Now, if it were easy to find a vibrant local church body that isn't Catholic/Protestant/Orthodox - that's another question

Catholics believe they are the ONE and ONLY holy christian church. Peter was the first Cathlolic pope. As the original and universal christian church, any non-catholic christian worship group are "protesters"----Protestants.

Doesn't mean the Catholics are right....Just stating what I was taught.

  10. The reason I watch post counts isn't because the person could be a troll, but a low post count just says they don't know some of the personalities on the board and some people don't take the time to know people's personalities before they go toe to toe with them.

Buy us dinner before you try to get in our faces, you know? :D

So if I understand right, Newbies should maybe not debate board members of a certain post count? This might be an idea---sort of like an intern status! Maybe someone who only has 100 posts needs to defer to the wisdom of someone who has 7000 posts.

Less than 100 posts- "Intern status" Simple Yes or no answers along with a formal introduction.

100-250 posts- Beginner Status" Do not ask questions, only respond---but defer to those who have a higher post count and a blog.

250-500 posts- "Junior Status" Blog should be up and running. May move beyond Yes or no answers and may post questions but not any form of drama.

I could go on----but again this is just an example to make everyone comfortable.

  11. Well catholics believe that the only universal christian church is the Holy Catholic church. Any reformation or deviation from Catholicism is "Protestant" defined literally as "protest"--- or "protesting the true and only christian church". Catholics basically believe Calvin and Luther and others as protestors. I myself am not a catholic but did attend catholic university---and only write this for historical reference.

  12. No, I think the computer has replaced the TV for many people. My mother would spend each day starting out with the Today show, Oprah, Price is Right, All My Children, Guiding Light, As the World Turns, Maury, etc etc. etc..... This would fill her day along with teaching us kids. Like the computer, the TV often served as background noise for her and my sisters and I as we performed our school work.

The Television was one-way communication---and the computer lets us interact in front of that screen--- instead of just staring at it all day like my mother did.
