  1. And you do it? I'm trying to imagine taking a dc to Walmart that time of night for a non-emergency shopping trip...

Our dc were *in bed* by 7:30 (not counting nights when we were at church), so we were getting ready for bed no later than 7. That includes nightly baths and hairwashing (and blow-drying. Yes, we washed and blowdried their hair before bed. :)).

Well, he's a teen not a little. And only occasionally have I done it....but the point is he wants to "go-go-go places" and I want the house to be wound down by then.

  2. What time does your family start getting ready for bed? I'm not talking about bedtime, but when your family winds down for the night, kids may shower or put PJs on. Maybe its because its summer and my youngest is out until just before dark and then comes in and asks me to take him to Walmart to get him something....at 8:30 or 9 pm. During the school year were already winding down by then. I cant wait to get back into a routine.

  3. 1. Visit Millennium Park and walk over to the Art Institute after spending time in the park. The Art Institute connects to the park....World Class.

    2. Visit the Museum Campus and pick between the Field Museum of Natural History, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium----or visit all 3. While at the Museum Campus you will see spectacular views of the city skyline looking back across Lake Michigan.

    3. Visit Navy Pier....

    4. Take a tour of Wrigley field if the Cubs are out of town.

    5. Catch a Cubs game if the Cubs are in town.

    6. Visit the Chicago Botanical Gardens which are north of the City.

    7. Visit the B'Hai temple which is north of the City.

    8. Shop on Michigan Ave. and visit Nordstrom, Water Tower Place, Macys and get some Chocalate at the Hershey store... (Also visit the American Girl Store).

    9. Get a drink on the 96th floor of the Hancock building observatory. The lounge is one floor above the observatory and you avoid paying the observatory fee. Most Chicagoans agree the Hancock building offers superior views over the Sears/Willis tower. You can see across Lake Michigan (60 miles away directly is Warren Dines state park) on a clear day.

    10. Chicago Pizza is a tourist thing... Get a real Chicago Italian Beef at Al's on Taylor. For desert, Marios Italian ice (south side tradition) is accross the street from Als.

    11. Sunbathe and/or swim at Oak St beach (or any of the other 20 beaches in Chicago).

    12. East at Chef Rick Bayless restaurants---such as XOCO or Frontera grill.

    13. Catch live theatre or an orchestra in the theater district.

    14. Attend an outdoor music concert at Ravinia. There is a train station in the middle of the outdoor theater and is quite unique.

    15. Go to Six Flags which is north of the city.

    16. Go to Rivers Casino near O'Hare and have dinner before/afterward at Gibsons steakhouse.

    17. take hubby and have tea at the Waldorf in their tea room (State St.)

    18. Take hubby and have lunch and tea at the Walnut room at the old Marshall Fields (now Macys) on State St.

    19. Visit the Sculptures in Daley Plaza and walk accross the street to the modern "state of illinois" building---widely regarded as the defacto state capitol of illinois. This building is where the previous two Illinois Governors schemed and defrauded Illinois citizens resulting in both currently incarcerated at the same time.

    20. Windella Boat ride on the Chicago River and/or Lake Michigan.

21, Have a "cheeseboooorga cheeseboorga" at the famous Billy goat tavern located directly below the Wrigley building on a hidden st. (lower wacker dr.) which is underneath Michigan ave. Billy Goat was made famous in Saturday Night Live and John Belushi.

    22. Experience muti-cultural diversity in 2 hours by riding the "L" 'red/purple Line" train from the affluent Wilmette to the economically challenged terminus at 87th st.

    23. Visit the Free Lincoln Park Zoo ----also visit the many sculptures and other park amenities.

    24. Catch a concert at "the double door" in Wicker Park... Many music careers were lanuched there----most famously "the Smashing Pumpkins".

    25. Many free concerts and festivals occur at Grant Park which is south of Millenium Park. these include "taste of Chicago" and "Gospel Fest".

    26. Check out Buckingham fountain in Grant Park.

    27. Ride a bike along Chicagos 26 mile lakefront path. If you get tired, you can catch the "L" or a bus and bring your bike on with you.

  4. :iagree: Yes, but you have those who feel the need to over state their opinion as we are setting our child up to be labeled, how wrong we are for our beliefs - so my opinion is that they misunderstood the question. Why else would people be so rude.

So the misunderstanding would be...in their answers like..

how weird, fears are unfounded and unhealthful and how people who are not the "norm" are paranoid. :001_huh:

how your child will not be allowed to play because we have to follow rules.

FYI- We follow rules, but in this case it is not the rule - no other teams in the league have names on their shirts. (This is information they did not have they just assumed we are rule breakers)

You are quite founded to be fearful. I think initials may make you stand out, but how about a nick name instead? Remember the names also help the coaches remember who the players are. Maybe your son could be "sneezy" or "gipper" on the jersey.....and why not just let him be called the nickname by everyone vs his actual name? If people never knew your sons "real name"-------you would be much safer.

  5. I've talked to the minister (my Mom) and she's not sure what to do because she is doing supply work. She did see the oldest bending the thumb backwards on a younger boy (not his brother) while passing the peace. She gave him The Look and he stopped.

There is a cry room, but I'm not sure how to suggest it to the parents since they don't talk to anyone in the church. I've tried to approach them and they will turn their backs to me. Really, having been a minister's child for all my thirty-nine years I've never seen anything like this. If I give them special attention then other congregants will be hurt. It's something of a Catch-22.

It's looking like I'll sit way up front with my inhaler and pray hard for them.

You use words like "me" and "I" a lot in this thread....This is the lords house...not your house. All should be welcome. Learn to tolerate, as you said its only 50 minutes. And Do not be judgmental.... Do not judge how people "pass the peace of christ". Talk to your mother (the minister) and seek wisdom to understand rather than find fault.

  6. IMO she sounds like she wants your jewelry and appliances BUT wants someone else to take care of the cats. My question, how old are you in relation to the cats? Is she afraid the cats will outlive you?:001_huh:

Well the strange thing is she is in her late 50's while my husband and I are i our mid-30's! I don't get her strange obsession with who will care for our cats... And it is like she is inferring that she not only wants to write the will---but be a part of it! Yikes!

  7. My bossy neighbor has been our friend for years. She has helped in good times and in bad and currently does our taxes for us. She does seem a little "crazy" sometimes. With our last income tax preparation, she charged us $150 vs $100 in previous years. She announced that for the extra $50 she will write our last will and testaments for us this year (we previously indicated that our wills were not up to date).

Since our tax return has been completed, "Beth" has called us and almost demanded we come over immediately to discuss this will!

"Beth; "You WILL come over at 5 to discuss who will get your Jewelry and kitchen appliances! " And: "Who will be responsible or those cats?????"

I feel like I am being bossed by this neighbor even though I am no longer in her employ! How or what do I say to get her to ease off of us?

  8. . . . selling, in order to help with financial situation - whether online, craigslist, yard sale, etc.? Would you consider *special memory* items, like a wedding gown, or some gift whose *specialness* lies in who gave it (a piece of jewelry or a music box, for example), or some basically unused item that became yours upon death of a relative, or - whatever. I can't really come up with good examples - just looking for more ideas and wondering what you would part with.

Am in the middle of a deep-cleaning project, so will check back later - I just took a quick minute to post this!

I have kept my entire wedding dress (including bra and thong) from my wedding night---since I waited so long to get married at age 31 to conjugate with my husband. I would consider selling the dress and other items in a pinch.

  9. Does anyone else create tapes of them singing praise and also home school lessons on audio tape for their children to listen to while falling asleep and in the car? My children who are now teens have grown up with this. When they go to bed I put my tapes on in their rooms. I believe this has helped them sleep and also reinforce the lesson plan. My oldest is 17 and we allowed him to drive with a friend just last week for the first time. DS 17 wanted to know who that was on the radio (he thought it was the radio my son said---instead of the tape) that sounded so nice and current. I was surprised and happy to know my kids are always learning!

  10. You guys are awesome!

Dh just called from work, apparently really worried that I would seriously consider doing this and said, "Please don't post on the WTM! They'll just encourage you to do it. Baby, we neeeeeeeeeed you!"

I snorted; I am not certain that he found this reassuring, but I did promise NOT to run out and buy a suit/shoes and Amtrak tickets for the interview.

Thanks for the roomate offers - in an ideal world, this would be a super great idea. I looked at an apartment, (lost it for a few minutes there and went completely out of my head), that I could rent on the short term. Windmere place or something like that on east 56th. A studio apt. was around $665.00 depending on the floor and amenities. However, it's been a bit since I spent any length of time in Chicago and I'm having trouble placing the area...trying to remember if this was, "You can walk around reasonably without carrying an AK47 :D, or definitely pack some grenades" type of area or something in between.

What I really need to happen is for something to pop up in Detroit. If the DSO would only give me a job!!!!! ;) I could live down there with some friends and dh could see me once in a while though I would still be refusing to iron shirts. I'm not doing that anymore or at least while I feel so grumpy about it!

Faith - I suppose I should practice for Sunday since I'm supposed to sing. Sigh....this is not the kind of church where I can pull off, "The King of Love My Shepherd is" in Latin and have people feel blessed. :glare: I think the classical in me is needing some nurturing.

On east 56th??? Thats the hood. Word to the wise: generally speaking, Picture the Sears (Willis Tower) and look North and Northwest of the tower for your apartment.
