I'm pretty sure both of the boys' high schools asked for the same info, and that was years ago. But I don't remember if the word "required" was used. I don't see it as a big deal. Mostly they usually want the info for the graduation ceremony ("our students were accepted to X number of colleges/universities and were offered [however much total] scholarship money."

This makes sense as far as the school's motivation goes.

Define "require."  What would happen if they didn't report it?

Did the school assist the students in applying for these scholarships/colleges?  If so, isn't it decent to let the school know the outcome?

I could see various good reasons why a private school would want this info.

    • To improve their ability to help kids get future scholarships and acceptances - the feedback cycle etc.
    • To advertise how well it prepares its students.
    • To congratulate and encourage its successful and prospective applicants.

I don't see a problem with sharing acceptances, though I don't think kids should have to share rejections, especially if they didn't have the school's help in the application process.

    It's on a graduation checklist!!

Yes, to a degree, they helped.

The daughter feels fine about saying whether she did or didn't get in to a given school -- in fact, that's already in their online advisory thing. It's sharing scholarship information that feels weird to her.

  3. The school my kid attends (private school, not huge) is requiring that kids turn in their acceptance/denial and scholarship information from any school they applied to.  This feels a little personal / intrusive to us, but we also haven't done it before. What do you think?

@*LC or @Wilma, we own Codenames but have only played with four. I assume you have to be in teams, but is it still just one person who gives the clues? I would think you would hear people discussing what to do and give things away otherwise.

Right - one person gives the clues, and her/his whole team guesses. It's fun with a group!

For those of you that have had good experiences, do you have any advice as to how to incorporate it into an already pretty rigorous cardio training plan?  Or know the questions to ask?

I think that could be a great way to figure out whether the coach at your Crossfit is a good one. Will she/he care about your personal goals, listen to your concerns, check in with you later to see how it's going? If yes, it's probably a good fit! But if not, watch out.

  6. I've crossfitted for 8 years. I super duper like it. Roughly 3x per week, sometimes 2, sometimes 4. My mom, who's juuuust about to be 70, Crossfits. She loves it!

The only time I've ever been injured in Crossfit was turning an ankle a little bit during a 200m run - I hadn't been paying attention and stepped in a hole. So really, that was my fault and not Crossfit's.

At my gym, the flow of the hour includes the coach checking in with each person about their plan for the workout. So: warm-up/stretch as a group (never more than 12 athletes), gather at the whiteboard for a chat through the workout, then as people are getting their weights/gear out for the thing, the coach pops around and checks in with people about their plan. So that could be "hey, how's your shoulder? Would doing ___ be better for you today rather than going overhead?" or "If that 400m run is taking more than about 2:30, why don't you drop it to a 200 so you can keep moving."  Or, to someone who isn't yet able to do the prescribed movement, the coach would offer a couple of options they can do.  I've had a few different coaches and been at 2 different gyms during the 8 years, and this is consistently what I've seen.

I’m not one that said this, but it is true for me. For me, we can’t typically talk about politics and current events at this time because we believe different things and it is not worth the fight. I generally don’t discuss my psychological state with him because he is a “fixer” and it just makes me feel more alone than I did before I told him.

OMG, same same same. Right down to the feeling more alone after talking to an unsympathetic/uncomprehending husband.

Oooh…we winter camped once in the Boundary Waters and there was a pack of wolves very near us howling in the night. Hands down the most peaceful sound I’ve ever heard (and normally I’m kinda wimpy about wild animals, but not the wolves for some reason. We had our dog with us, he slept snuggled between us under a wool blanket and would just quiet his breathing when they howled, it was very cool— it was clear that he was on guard but not worried). Good memories! I really loved living in Minnesota.

The pack of wolves!! What a cool experience!

I backpacked Pictured Rocks trail and about 50 miles in Isle Royale last summer and it was absolutely fabulous.  Wolves howling, loons calling, bald eagles, and moose (mostly at Isle Royale).  I highly recommend anything along Lake Superior, It is beautiful.  We backpacked for about 10 days. The weather was glorious also.

That sounds dreamy!! Pictured Rocks looks great. We were thinking Isle Royale initially for this trip, but the cost of the ferry put me off -- being a group of six made that pretty pricey!

  10. Yes to the extra-toxic bug spray!! The mosquitos up there are wild. And OMG to leeches - never have I ever! My kids will ordinarily swim in anything, but we will have to draw the line there. Yuck yuck yuck. Thank you for saying!

I'm still sorting it out with the mileage. We have some kids less enthusiastic about the event, so I'm trying to balance a bit. But we'll probably cap it at 3 nights and maybe 8-10 miles a day.  I believe everyone in my crew can do that with minimal suffering.  I remember Gooseberry Falls! We've been there, and I would love to go back. That might be an ideal section for us!
