  1. It sounds like the only brainwashing your daughter is experiencing is coming from you. I am so sad for these children that are going to graduate homeschool and essentially know nothing about functioning in the world. It seems some homeschoolers walk a fine line between homeschooling and child abuse. :(

It has come to our attention that TESC is revamping their degree requirements. This will apply to all who enroll after July 1, 2013.

    Here is the article:

    http://multimedia.te...13/feature.html

Here are some of the things that concern me:

    -----------------

Global Environmental Change, War and American Society and Philosophy of Religion.

3.) Personal and social responsibility (9 credits)

Requirements encompass diversity, global literacy, responsible global leadership and lifelong learning course work. This category includes: Cultural Diversity, Elements of Intercultural Communication and Ethics and the Business Professional.

    ---------------

I'll readily admit I'm a conservative who is resisting these cultural diversity/ environmental/ etc changes. Part of the reason we were considering TESC for our daughter is to avoid the brainwashing from liberal professors at a young age (<18), and now it seems like that's what will be included since these are courses, not exams- it seems that none of these courses can be done by CBE (credit-by-exam).

It's still early; we'll have to see what they say. Lots of people aren't happy about this change. (BTW, my daughter will be learning about all of these things, just not through a liberal institution's POV.)

  2. Hi :) So - I've been reading (most) of this thread and I'm still not sure if I am in the right place, lol :) I'm a deist - many times deists self identify as "free-thinkers" having "reason-based belief" in a deity of some kind. "Free-thinkers" is part of the group name here, but I'm thinking ya'll don't mean the kind associated with deism? I know someone mentioned an "alternative spirituality" group on the Chat Board, but I usually have more in common with purely secular/atheist home schoolers than I do with the alternate spirituality types - even though I get along great with anyone from either group. That being said, I can certainly relate to tall the wiccans/witches posting here :) Anyway - would y'all mind if I hang out?

You are certainly welcome here. :) I'm Agnostic, somewhat leaning towards Agnostic who believes there is some sort of higher power. Or maybe the universe is the higher power. I'm content with not knowing all of the details though. Welcome!

Hmm, and environmentalism and Christianity. In more conservative branches, it's been posed as sort of a dichotomy between "earth worshipping" and "Jesus worshipping".

People can't affect the environment because God made it, and he's so big and powerful, and to worry that we may be damaging it irreparably is to imply God didn't create a big, good enough earth if his creatures can irrevocably hurt it.

Also, there's the concept of environmentalist as "earth worshipper" who elevates spending time and energy taking care of our environment (imagine such a thing!) above the concept of spending time and energy worshipping a deity.

In these cases environmentalism is viewed as sort of an idolatry.

This definitely seems to be a divide between conservative and liberal Christians, though.

    I.

Exactly this. God made the earth so he will sustain it. Period.

  4. Can I just say this thread moves FAST?!

KK, I'm happy your sis is doing better. That must have been so scary!

Dot, lots of PVJ&T for you. :D

No soul patrol PMs here either. I don't know if my feelings should be hurt or I should be relieved? Perhaps my prayer warriors are praying on the down low. Maybe there is some sort of an "adopt an athiest" ministry much like the "adopt a cardinal" ministry".

  5. Audrey, sometimes I miss having a handy dh. The ex built a high chair one day when our daughter tried to sit at the table and fell. He made her a dollhouse that looked kinda like our house. Oh, we'll, this one can hold a job and will have sex with me . . . .

Good luck Angela. And good luck amo . . .is this his first EEG? I hope they find something fixable.

I wish DH was more handy. I want someone to build me some bunkbeds and a playscape. Or fix the deck outside. I've actually considered taking some carpenter classes and buying some tools because I've seen so many DIY projects on the Internet. (I have no idea why my phone insists that Internet be capatilized. lol)

  6. Ugh. There's a good one with almond flour... Let me see if I can find it.

    Aha! http://thenourishinghome.com/2012/03/almond-flour-biscuits/

Yummy. Really good with herbs, too.

Those look yummy! I just have brown rice flour, rice flour, potato starch, and corn starch so far. I have a couple of bread recipes that call for millet flour and sorghum flour and those were going to be my next purchases and I think I'll add almond flour to the list.

  7. I just read the first page but wanted to go ahead and respond. I would be super positive with him and buy him a guitar with lessons plus cooking lessons. Do you have homeschool cooking lessons where you live?

He definitely sounds depressed and possibly ADD. I'd get him into a psychiatrist and on a trial of antidepressants. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain from trying the AD's.

This probably sounds strange coming from me but I'd try CLE or ACE pacs for LA and math. Drop everything else. The rest is gravy right now. The small workbooks might break it up better and not be so overwhelming.

Try to be 150% positive with him right now and relax until you can get into a psychiatrist. I truly don't think he's doing any of this on purpose.

    (((Hugs))) and lots of PVJ&T!!

I think it was about someone's home that possibly had a demon floating around? People were explaining how it could have entered the home. I have a terrible memory, but I'm pretty sure it was here.

Yes, demons have many ways to enter your house or even body. There was a time in my life when I was very interested in Buddhism (still am) so I had quite a few books about it in my house. I was told to throw them all away because that could be an invitation for demons.

  9. Tarot Cards: I have never seen a deck in my life. Things like tarot cards, fortune telling, crystals, Ouiji (sp?) boards, hypnotism, and yoga were forbidden because they are demonic. Of course, I don't believe that anymore and think they would be pretty harmless. Unless you got a bad fortune and made it a self fulfilling prophecy.

We have a new agey bookstore here which sells those types of things but I've never set foot into it. I've always been interested in what was inside and told DH I'd like to check it out now. :)

No, I never ran across such people, even before I quit believing in a god. At least, not until we started homeschooling. I didn't know there were people who thought humans and dinosaurs lived at the same time, that the earth was 4000-6000 years old, or any of that other nutty stuff. I did know a girl in high school who wasn't allowed to dance because of her religion. I don't recall what religion, but she also had hair that grew almost to her ankles because their women didn't cut their hair. Most people were nice to her (though she was probably bullied by some), and she was a curiosity to most of us. Extreme religion was not the norm in any place I lived. When I was teaching high school I had an LDS student who didn't stand for the pledge and didn't take part in pep rallies or holiday parties. That's about the extent of my exposure to religious extremists until I began homeschooling ds.

I did not run across these types of christians until homeschooling either. Homeschooling really opened my eyes to the Christian faith and how damaging it is. I'd probably still a Christian today if not for the HSing groups I joined and this forum.

It's conflicting for me, though, because I have Christian friends IRL. They don't talk about it and they are completely normal. It's simply not an issue.

I was on a Malbec kick before I got pregnant. I can't remember a particular winery, though...it's been several months since I've had occasion tp buy a bottle. But I don't remember one I *didn't* like.

If I were stocking up for a snowstorm, a bottle or two of malbec with a nice big bottle of vodka as back-up would be my go-to. I big fat puffy heart vodka. Vodka with lemonade. Vodka with cranberry. Vodka. Just vodka. And then I would probably bake three different kinds of cookies and some cupcakes.

I'm laughing because my SIL and I kid each other about our alcohol preferences. I like beer and she likes wine or vodka. :p

I don't have any misconceptions or ignorance about paganism. I saw in post 6 you said "I'm an atheist in that I don't believe in any literal gods. I believe in all of them as ideas with power". I guess I haven't spyed [sic] on the Atheist thread enough to have my question answered!

Didn't see Bethany's question; I'll have to go look. Thanks.

Reason number 4,521,083,357 I am annoyed by the Christian faith. I'm just speaking for myself, of course.
