  1. I've loved these past 2 years of Empty Nest.

Yes = adjusting to just cooking (new, lowfat) diet for my dh.
Realizing that I *never* could have had a clean house while the kids were at home.

My biggest adjustment was realizing that it wasn't all 100% "free time".
At least half my time is STILL spent with "Food-Clothing-Shelter" >> cooking, laundry, cleaning.
And all the spontaneous help that our parents and kids need.

So now I set aside every Friday just for special craft projects, etc.
    It's fun!

  2. The technology & the geography will improve by the time your grandkids are 5 years old!
(Yes, we kept our beloved old Leapfrog Odyssey Globe, but it has charging issues now.
Our dd got a used one for $5 somewhere---which is an easy solution for the grandkids!)

  3. Rabbit Trail here = For beginner sewists, you can learn a lot on youtube.

Here's one on resizing a T-shirt (to make it fit more snugly) =

It's 1000% easier to re-size something she finds at Goodwill (or in her closet) = minor alterations.
    Especially if she's young.

I love Sewing With Nancy (old PBS show, now on youtube).
It's a lot easier to sew a quilt, or a tote bag, or some other craft item . . . esp. for beginners.

Also, she can probably find sewing classes locally.
It's just hard to start out sewing a dress, for example, and expect it to look great after a few hours of work.

But sewing is really such a wonderful hobby, which saves LOTS of money & (eventually) give her a great sense of accomplishment!

  4. I've been following this thread, trying to get an understanding of what YOU are responsible for.
To protect yourself, I would keep track of as much as you can.
Our Friends of the Library group treasurer talked briefly to a CPA, to make sure she was doing the right thing.
Oftentimes the treasurer gets blamed when the group's finances go bad.
So our treasurer meets with the other officers annually, to open the books & make sure the officers agree that the books are being kept correctly.

  5. We finished homeschooling during the lockdown.
I can't part with my homeschool records yet, but I've taken photos of the highlights.
I'm trying to determine if that's "sufficient" to bring back the fond memories.

I'm very active with our local Friends of the Library group, and prepping to move to the city our 5 kids now live in.

  6. I don't know the rules, but I would quickly over-ride their hesitations and sell the retirement apartment.
They can be immediately put on a waiting list . . . but just a couple of months of paying double housing costs will equal the car.
EVERY move will be against their will.   BTDT.
You could put their stuff in a self-storage unit until they have more clarity.

At least talk with the retirement village, to see what their options are.

  7. We're in the western tip of KY, home of the December Tornado.
We got 1/2" of rain, & our region is officially in a severe drought.  Still.

We did get a bit of rain these past two days, maybe 1/2" more.

But yes, praying for those whose lives were destroyed by all that rain!

  8. We go to Imo's Pizza across the highway from the Zoo (basically).
Also, HIGHLY recommend The Muny---outdoor plays, often they have a kids' performance.
(They had some flooding this week, sadly.)
Ted Drew's frozen yogurt is down the street as well.

The Arch would be inside (newly renovated in the past few years).
Magic House, kids' museum, is indoors too.
Six Flags Amusement Park (far across town, out West).

  9. I'm going to add that we could NOT locate my in-laws' 1958 marriage license (after several moves).
It took a few weeks, but we were able to get a new copy from their state's courthouse.
Yes, the employee had to get out the Microfiche, in the "back room" . . . but I'm not going to sweat losing our marriage license in a fire anymore.

  10. The photos on my phone automatically get backed up on Google Photos (aka in the cloud).
It's easy to create Albums for each event, & then share them with the appropriate family/friends.
You can pay to have a larger Family Plan  with 2 TB of storage.

  11. It seems like EVERY Elderly Parent is resistant.
Agreeing with getting the testing & diagnosis, which may show something that's treatable.
Another option is moving him to a handicapped accessible apartment that is closer to your house.
Or Elder Care during the day, or a neighbor who can be paid to check in on him periodically.

All 4 of our parents are now in retirement apartments or locked memory care.
There's a point where they can't be left alone.
It's difficult for them to agree to move, much less deal with all the changes.

And strongly agreeing that you get POA for both finances and healthcare, while he's still able to sign off on them.
It's beyond "extremely difficult" to make decisions on their behalf without them.
Getting a estate attorney to quickly create those documents is only about $100 or so, & makes your future job 1000% easier.
