  1. We used Elementary Greek and switched to Athenaze after book 2. Elementary Greek is a great intro and the amount of work assigned each day is perfect. DD wound up retaining a lot. Athenaze is a whole different animal, but she was definitely well prepared after EG 1-2. I think she didn’t hit new material in Athenaze until chapter 5 or so.  I plan to follow this same path with DS10, he is a different learner than DD and needs a bit of a slower pace with Greek.

If you’re teaching Athenaze you may want another book on your shelf for reference and to help you explain certain things another way. I have Mastronarde’s text Introduction to Attic Greek which is great for this. It also has extra exercises and some online resources in case your student needs more practice (hello, participles).

  2. It’s a lot. I am not a great cook so the few times I have hosted I buy basically everything premade. I feel like it is a lot of pressure - everyone will remember “the Thanksgiving where Mom burned the Turkey” or whatever. I’d much rather host a lower pressure gathering on a random weekend - and even then I still might serve pizza.

There are really nice disposable dish options right now. And matching disposable cutlery and serving utensils and all kinds of stuff. Is hiring a cleaning person to come in a few days before within your budget? That would take a big chunk of work off your family’s plate and then you guys just have to deal with the cooking and clean up part.

  3. I thought of this chicken with mushrooms dish. Chicken with Mushrooms   I always slice the chicken into bite size pieces before cooking because I find it cooks faster and the pieces get nice and crisp that way. I serve it with rice and put like chopped broccoli or green beans on the side. (Note: it does have a wine base to the sauce, but if that is not suitable for your situation, I think you could easily omit or substitute another acid component - maybe lemon juice would work?)

  4. I was thinking if you get a rotisserie chicken and some nice crusty sandwich bread, you could make some kickass sandwiches with sliced chicken, leafy greens, fresh tomatoes, maybe a little pesto spread.

The other one that comes to mind is this tortellini pasta dish from smitten kitchen

It’s really good warm or cold. I would probably pair it with some sliced cucumbers and tomatoes or something.

  5. I think it depends on the kid. I have a whole to parts DD that is doing awesome with Athenaze for Greek. She needs to read and read and read the language to internalize the grammar. She actually goes back and reads the previous chapters’ stories when she’s confused about a grammar concept.

I also have a DS who is very parts to whole. He likes to understand the grammar concept completely before attempting to translate. He really is liking the Big Book of Lively Latin. It has concise explanations and enough practice where he feels successful.

LOL. I was thinking "what's sad about liking regular pepperoni pizza?"

Actually I do like some different things sometimes, but when I am craving pizza, I just want cheese or pepperoni, maybe some black olives or mushrooms. A white garlic sauce with spinach.  Sometimes more vegetables such as fresh tomatoes, roasted red pepper, red onion. Sometimes buffalo chicken.  Never barbecue sauce, that's just not a flavor I like in general.

But, to me, yeah, pizza is cheese or cheese and pepperoni.

Oh, sometimes my husband makes pesto pizza, using pesto from Costco, a little mozzarella and parmesan, and pine nuts if we can afford them. I like that too. But again, it's not pizza to me

This is how I am too. Fancy topped pizza is delicious. But it doesn’t satisfy my need for a big, foldy, greasy slice when I want one!

Our local Whole Foods makes a breakfast pizza that is kind of neat. It has spinach and tomato and bacon and a tiny bit of mozzarella cheese. And then they somehow get a couple of eggs to fry sunny side up on top. (I think it’s because they have that super hot industrial oven).

  7. In our gatherings, each family is responsible for their own drinks. (We have some who drink alcohol, some who do not, some who drink soda, some who prefer seltzer, some who want coffee after dinner, etc, etc)  It’s just easier for our group this way.

I am one of the less skilled cooks in the family group.  (I’m actually okay, but we have some really, really good - and obsessive - cooks).  I often get asked to bring a cheese and cracker tray.  I pick out 3-5 blocks of cheese in the deli and like one of those cracker assortments they usually have near the deli.  Sometimes if there is a container of mini pickles I will get those too.  I just keep it all in a shopping bag till I get there and bring the tray separately.  Then I can set it up when I arrive.  It takes just a few minutes.

Thanks, I will do so for sure. As someone who is not super familiar with HIPAA, I always think of it as protecting my privacy. So the fact that I need a letter to discuss my own medical information with the insurance company seems a little wacky. They are diligently protecting my privacy from...myself! 😂

Well, no one's mentioned them yet, and I hesitate to do so b/c they're flying off the shelves &/or not in stock due to some crazy covid shortage or something, but Snyder's cheddar pretzel pieces.  Which are a genius bit of a thing on Snyder's part in the first place, because they literally take all the broken bits & pieces of their chunky pretzels, coat them in different flavorings, and sell that. The cheddar ones are the only ones that are any good, though. (there is a honey mustard/onion one that is disgusting, and a buffalo sauce one that may be good if one likes spicy things, I don't know).

My store has been out for ages, but then I found them at the other grocery store and bought 6 bags. It takes roughly Herculean effort not to eat a bag a day. (I am trying, mightily, to eat only one bag per weekend. And not open one during the week. And not get annoyed if other people in the house also want to eat some.)

I just bought this today based on your recommendation. I can’t wait to try it!

  10. I thought I was the only one that used the same coffee mug without washing it for multiple days in a row! I also tend to leave it half full in the kitchen to go back to and sip later.

I have a large plastic 1L Evian water bottle. I drink from it, refill it, drink it, etc. I keep the same one for about 6 months before getting a new one. So gross, I know.

  11. We’re good on most stuff. I’m waiting for pasta to go on sale so I can buy 10-12 boxes. I also like that shelf stable almond milk because it doesn’t go bad so quickly and it can be used in coffee, for cereal, oatmeal, etc. Definitely need flour and yeast. We have a lot of paper products, rice, frozen fruits and veggies, frozen ground beef and chicken, broths, tuna, etc.

I can’t believe how much prices have gone up here (just outside DC). There’s a local taco/burrito shop we order from maybe once a month. It’s one of the few spots where each family member can find an item that we want to eat. My burrito salad thing that I like used to be $8.88 before the virus (I remember because I thought the number was cool).  We ordered from there last week and the exact same item was $12.79 😧

  12. You can also go deeply into precalc and stretch it a bit too. My kid is on the young side, but precalculus (using Foerster’s text) took us a bit longer than I originally expected. There’s so much to explore and do!  Often she’d get an idea from the book and then sort of use it in different ways.

For example, we had fun with mathematical expectation (DH had read somewhere about hole in one golf odds and prizes and she got really interested). She also really, really enjoyed rotating conic sections. We spent a lot of time exploring that.

  13. I’d like to watch it. Not having seen it, I don’t know if they cover the physiology of eating disorders at all. But basically if you are predisposed to an eating disorder, eating at a caloric deficit for some period of time can trigger one. Regardless of body image, religious beliefs regarding weight, anything like that. It’s a biological - not a psychological process. Restricting calories for these people leads to the ED. Not the other way around.

it’s a fascinating topic. The relevant study is called the Minnesota Starvation Study.

  14. I go through phases with this. Right now it’s this really sharp Swiss cheese. I cut it into little cubes and I could probably eat like 100!

But then I get kind of tired of it after a few days and move on. Before this Swiss cheese I found, I was snacking a lot on roasted, salted peanuts. Now I have not had a peanut in like 3 weeks.

  15. I have had 2 Sole treadmills and have been very pleased with each. The warranty is excellent - but I only needed one repair after I had owned the first one for 7 years (and it was minor - lasted 3 more years after that). I think the model I have now is the F85. Nice, wide belt and very comfortable and sturdy to run on. It does fold up, but it’s still kind of big in it’s folded position. We usually just keep it unfolded.

Make sure someone checks the electrical load of the circuit you plan to use the treadmill with to be sure it’s safe. They are huge electricity hogs!

  16. I throw all the laundry in together. I don’t sort whites from colors. My laundry room is in the basement so 2 floors down from the bedrooms. I like to always have a load in process, so I never get too behind. I fold on the living room floor. As the folded laundry piles up I take it up bit by bit (or if I see a kid walking by who has a pile, I give it to them).  Putting it away but by bit helps with the eternal basket of folded. But never delivered laundry.

I have 4 kids and I do all the laundry. I suspect that if i asked the 12 and 9 year olds to do their own they just...wouldn’t wash their clothes ever 🙄  they have plenty of time to learn to do laundry when they are at college.

  17. I feel for you on this. My DH never met a clean, flat surface that he didn’t want to put a random assortment of papers on. As soon as I clean one off and organize it, it starts again. Everything from important work documents to oil change coupons to old newspapers to bills 🙃

I’m glad the paperwork was found in the end!

  18. I am just outside DC.

    some of our favorites:

    1. Natural History museum. Don’t miss the prehistoric human section (my son has a favorite prehistoric human we visit periodically) and the gems/minerals section is wonderful.
    2. National Building Museum. This is not often mentioned but the architectural history exhibits here are really interesting. The entry hall is huge and breathtaking.
    3. Spy Museum. This is a favorite of all my kids.
    4. National Gallery of Art/Sculpture Garden.
    5. Museum of the American Indian. (If you’re going to eat at a museum on the Mall, this is widely viewed as the tastiest place.)

    6. I think the Washington Monument is closed(?)
    7. Come over the river to Virginia and look at Iwo Jima and visit Arlington National Cemetery. If you have access to a vehicle, take a picnic to Gravelly Point and watch the planes take off and land at National Airport basically right on top of your head.  It’s a very unique experience.

    have a wonderful time!!!

  19. Seems normal to me. I find I do best with a framework for the year (for example, this year I want to polish my 4th graders writing. He should be responsible for 2 writing assignments per week) and then fill in stuff as I go (next week I’d like him to write a few paragraphs about the Egyptian pyramids and also a story with some dialogue. No school Monday, so we will work on the Egyptians on Tuesday and Wednesday and the story on Thursday and Friday.)

I have 3 kids schooling now (7th, 4th and 1st) and since I have that framework in my mind, I find I can get my week to week plans for all of them done in 60-90 minutes on the weekend (depending on interruptions, haha).

  20. DD12 gets 6-7 a night. She has always been extremely low sleep needs. I think she enjoys the quiet house, too. She is up after me every night. I am a morning person and she is an owl. I don’t mind as long as she is quiet and cleans up any mess (she sometimes makes a small snack like soup or toast to eat while she reads or studies. Which is totally allowed but she needs to remember to clean it all up.)

This amount of sleep is normal for her and she’s usually very even keeled and functional. But every once in a while, I will come home in the afternoon from taking another kid somewhere and she’s passed out in her bed asleep. Just needing to catch up, I guess. It’s very sweet.
