I will also be ordering the following:

Thank you. I will definitely take a look at that. I do believe that I will let him choose what interests him but I will try to guide/coach him through the process...at least for our first few projects.
-
Hmm...i suppose student led since he is 14 and largely responsible for his own learning. I wouldn't mind being involved as a coach/mentor but I want him to work on his own for the most part.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to implement Project Based Learning for an 8th grader?
-
Have anybody used the American Heritage DVD series? Pros? Cons?

Thank you all so much!!

Tentative plan for next year --8th Grade
Grammar: Grammar Made Easy-Writing a Step Above--Learning linguistic grammar but skipping sentence diagramming.
Writing: Story Grammar--Focusing on sentence construction for at least first half of the year after 2 years of IEW.
Vocab: Merrian Webster Vocab Builder [word roots] + ANKI [sRS]
Literature: To Be Determined.
Logic: The Fallacy Detective--This child loves critical thinking.
Math: Algebra I--Outsourced to Derek Owens.
Science: Physical Science--Derek Owens stand alone program.
History: America-The Story of US + YouTube:Crash Course in American History--we are decidedly going light on history since he will have to do history again for HS.
Geography: The Little Man in the Map --Fun/Visual way for ds to learn about the states
Spanish: Fox/CNN Latino articles to translate; Hulu Latino- watch Spanish programming
Bible: Lightbearers (possibly)
Computer Programming: To be determined
All that plus the child plays 4+ hours of tennis per day.
Whew!! I hope we can get it all done. :001_unsure: :001_unsure: :001_unsure:

Where might I find information on "Story Grammar"? Thank you for your help!!

Is there an American history program [apprx 8th grade] that focuses on history from a conceptual standpoint? From that I mean less focus on names and dates and memorization and more on the story line? Understanding the general timeline and sequence of events is more important to me than specific details.

Thank you! Yes, we will definitely make a bigger effort to speak to him in Spanish; and since we live in South Texas he is surrounded by opportunities to speak Spanish.
-
First let me explain that both my husband and I are native Spanish speakers but our 14yo ds is not. We speak mostly English to/with him however he is used to us speaking Spanish to each other or interspersing conversations with a smattering of Spanish. So what I'm saying is that his ear is trained and he does indeed understand more than he speaks.
For the last two years he has done grammar based programs....one was a workbook and the other an online program called StudySpanish.com, however I feel that he needs a change. I was considering just having him watch Hulu Latino but it is so easy to mentally "check out" while passively watching shows.
So, I am toying with the idea of assigning short news articles written in Spanish [CNN/Fox Latino] for him to translate in to English. With the hope that perhaps in the latter half of the school year we can switch to having him translate from English to Spanish.
Do you think it is possible to learn Spanish in this way? I just feel that there is a disconnect from the Grammar to actual speech or written word.

Thank you so much!! I will definitely have to check these out. I appreciate the input!

I would love the hear comparisons of Vocabulary Vine, English from the Roots Up and Vocabulary from Classical Roots. So far we have used only Word Roots; I love the concept of learning roots and being able to decipher unknown words. I definitely want to continue along this route.

Bump. Any more opinions of this course?

Has anyone used http://education-portal.com/ for CLEP prep? It looks very user friendly and interesting but I am wondering whether it goes in-depth enough to really prepare one for the exams.
-
I ended up signing DS up for StudySpanish.com and so far so good. It seems to cover just what we need. We did not order the CD's which are the conversational part of the course because my DH and I are able to cover that with him, so he only really needs a grammar/vocabulary program. He seems to like it and is covering 2 lessons per week. There are about 100 lessons so this should take him through one calendar year.
I also found EducationPortal.com which has a beginner's Spanish course available. It is designed to help cover everything that one would need in order to CLEP out of Spanish but so far it is only about 30% complete.
I am hopeful that by the time he finishes the StudySpanish program the EdPortal program will be finished so that he may take a second year of Spanish. After that, I hope that he will be able to take the CLEP test.
Thank you for your responses.

Lost Tools of Writing Tutor? Online class?
in High School and Self-Education Board
Posted
I would like my son to start the Lost Tools Of Writing in Jan but I don't want to teach it. Circe institute only starts new classes in the fall. So what are my options? Does anyone know of another online class or tutor?
