Thank you!! I'll look at EdX. Would love to have a link if you find the time. =)

I know this is a Classical Education forum but I bet a few have veered off on tangents. So, would you share with me if you have used an unconventional spin to a core subject?
For instance, I am thinking of approaching U.S. History from an economic standpoint. I would like to emphasize the mobilization America. How U.S. companies reinvented themselves in order to help the America win. Companies like Ford, Disney, General Electric made significant contributions. This is my effort to make the subject more relevant and palatable for my ds.
I am also considering centering our study of poetry around song lyrics.
I would love to hear your thoughts.

What some of you have pointed out about him not having the math skills yet is VERY true. He had just begun Algebra I when the test was taken.
Thank you all so much for giving me some perspective. I appreciate the insights provided. Hopefully next year we will see better results. And yes, he did score around the 50% for sophomores so that IS good considering he is an 8th grader.
Thank you all again!!

My ds who is usually a pretty good test taker got a much lower than expected PSAT score. He is an 8th grader so I did not do any real prep with him. Mostly I wanted to see where we were and also to take some of the "scariness" out of the test process for him.
Now, I see that we definitely have some work to do...and lots of prep for next time.
Any advice? Words of encouragement welcomed...LOL!!

Still waiting in Texas....blah!

Boo. It doesn't work for me because this was his first year taking it so we don't have any 2013 scores. I'll have to wait. =(

We have used the History Channel Store for much of our history this year. We ordered The Revolution, The Civil War and World War I and World War II documentaries. We really enjoy watching them as a family and have gotten so much more out of them than any text book.

We need a thread for you--books that we loved and that turned us on to reading. It might not work for your kid, but at least there will be something there to choose from other than The Grapes of Wrath.
OMG!! That would be fabulous!! We would both greatly appreciate that!!

I guess my question stemmed from the fact that I married a foreigner who despite having read none of the above did just fine in college and is a productive member of society.
I, myself, am a slow reader and never developed the ability to visualize while reading....so for me, reading is more like listening to the radio than watching a movie in my mind. The Grapes of Wrath, The House of the Seven Gable, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Odyssey, The Jungle...ugh....I despised them all. But I do remember enjoying Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies and 1984. Perhaps I will start there.
Thank you all for your responses and "twisting my VIRTUAL arm!!" LOL! Now, I only remember being required to read 5-6 books per year...so that should be enough right??

That was a great video! Thank you.

Fortunately, homeschooling allows you some flexibility. You could choose to weight the English credits more heavily towards the writing aspect (Composition, Journalism, Technical Writing, Rhetoric (as in public speaking/debate), or Creative Writing), and less heavily towards the literature aspect.
Thank you so much Lori!! I will definitely take your advice and weigh more heavily on the writing aspect. I see so much more value in making him a great writer!!

Can we do high school English that focuses on writing and composition and skip the literature? I see no real reason to study literature...I kinda detest fiction.
I'm not sure that I ever gained anything from having suffered through the Grapes of Wrath or The House of the Seven Gables.
Am I alone in my aversion??

If my ds has worked his way through Story Grammar and Paragraphs for Middle School by Killgallon, is there any point to him doing the Killgallon High School books? Do those go in more depth or would it just be more repetition of the same concepts?

Can any one share feedback on Veritas Press or Landry's online Spanish classes?

Is there a list of online/virtual schools that are NCAA approved?

In a nutshell, it teaches order of operations in 3 easy steps. First get rid of double signs and replace with one sign and bracket off each term. Second, decide what type of multiplication is required within the term (straight multiplication called Mashing or Distributive multiplication). Lastly, Clean up which is combining like terms. It makes big "scary" expressions feel manageable.
And yes, on the far left there is a button for downloading the PDF workbook which you may read instead of watching the powerpoint.

This math teacher has come up with an ingenious way to teach Algebra. His method takes the guess work out of the order of operations and solving for X.
I walked my son through the PowerPoint Textbook on the far right. It was like a light bulb suddenly turned on!! Woohoo!!
I just need to find worksheets where he can continue to practice his new skill. Any suggestions would be welcomed. I know there are many sites but I'm not sure if this is called simplifying expressions, solving equations are exactly what topic the worksheets might be found.

Uh-oh, I ordered the Conceptual Physics but didn't realize there were two level [college/high school]. I wonder how much more difficult the college level book will be.
We used Real Science for Kids Physics and Chemistry last year so he has already had an introduction to both so he was not interested in Physical Science which would again cover both.

We will definitely be looking for the class with Mrs. Mathis; but I think we shall have to wait till next fall. That's okay. We are going to continue to focus on Killgallon Sentence Composing and Paragraphs. Thank you!!
-
Thank you so much for the replies. Hewitt's Conceptual series seems like it will be a good fit. Even though many say it will not be enough for a STEM kid, I think it will be a great introduction. Now I have to decide whether to use Physical Science or Physics--suggestions?
-
Sorry for the double post. I wish I could delete but I don't know how.
-
I'm afraid that my son [14yo] is bored by the Derek Owens Physical Science that we are using. He likes math but he says this science is so mathy that it takes the fun out of science. Can you please give me some suggestions of a more engaging Science curriculum appropriate for 8th grade? I was thinking about checking out Dive in to Science.

What Spanish do you all recommend for high school?

I'm considering using Live Lingua which offers Skype classes with Mexican teachers. This is appealing to me because the Native speakers will be using an accent and intonation that we are more accustomed to. I will let you know how it goes.
