  1. Thanks Sue! One of the links was actually a thread started by me several months ago, but I totally forgot about it. Ugh. My poor overworked brain is shot, KWIM? One child left and I'm not sure I have what it takes to get him through high school. Lord help me. :tongue_smilie:

Melissa - I did the same thing on a thread! Oh my, what we're gaining in knowledge we're losing in everyday functionality.

  2. Thank you for posting your experience 8FilltheHeart!!! DS used to fly through MM but AoPS pre-alg really makes him think. It is work for him. But I think that's a good thing!!

Just b/c AoPS does not include numerous real world application problems does not mean that students will be missing how concepts apply to the real world. B/c students solve the math problems via proofs, they develop greater understanding of the concepts. It is the level of complexity behind the development of the concepts that easily translates into understanding how they apply to the real world.

The exception to "few" real world application problems is their calculus course; it is very application problem "heavy."

I have kids that have gone both routes.......Foerster and AoPS. My "Foerster" only route ds is now a chemical engineer that graduated Cum Laude (never made anything below an A in any math course). My 10th grader is taking AoPS cal. My AoPS ds has a far better conceptual understanding of math than his engineering brother. AoPS is the reason why. Both are fabulous math students, but AoPS does develop an understanding that is lacking in traditional approaches like Foerster.

  3. How much assistance, if any, did you give your DC in doing the challenge set which we have to scan in and email to the teacher? The instructions indicate that collaboration w/ classmates is welcomed etc but it doesn't say anything about parents. Are you totally hands off? If you see DC got a problem wrong, do you tell them it's wrong and have them try again or just let it go?

    Thanks,

  4. Writing is an area where I'd like to be consistent. I'm confidant in SWB's methods that I think she will take us into high school. I would look at the next several levels of CC and see if it speaks to you. I think I read of two folks who are jumping ship after CC narrative. I don't recall the reasons - ease of teaching it perhaps? I'm using LToW mostly for the invention stage but I likely won't use LToW2. WWS will be my spine and I'll supplement with things as I see need for them.

  5. I believe that SWB is hoping to get a WWS level out each year. She's working on WWS6 and I assume it's targeted for Dec 2012 so yes, if you start WWS5 summer 2012, unless you have an older child, you won't be finished when WWS6 comes out. SWB posted a scope and sequence for WWS5-8 somewhere. Perhaps it is at http://www.welltrainedmind.com site.

SaDonna is doing CC fable and narrative along side WWS5. I would search for her posts. There has been a few threads on it.

  6. I've left the books intact and there hasn't been an issue. They pages stay open nicely. It's not like WWE where you are tearing out pages. It's called a student book b/c it's written to the student to encourage independence. It's not a student "Workbook" as in lots of pages to write on. Narrations and outlines are done in the notebook. You have DC set up their WWS notebook which is explained in the WWS student book. Day 1 narrations go in narrations, day 2 outlining goes in outlining, copia skills (day 3,4) goes in Copia. You make reference pages which go in the back. Later you add a divider for literary criticism. 99% of the work is done on paper and placed in the 3-ringer binder.

  7. Well, so far we've mainly used MCT Voyage just for reading and discussing. We haven't done any of the writing assignments. Most are research assignments based on the story line so you can just as easily have DC write from his science or history. We did do many of the assignments in Paragraph Town. For example, write a paragraph in 1st person, now rewrite it not using 1st person...what's the difference in tone? Things like that.
