  1. Explode the Code did write back and say that the program is set up that way and there is no way for me to fix the problem. That they have never heard of a student figuring this out?? Im sure that some have :) My son hated getting things wrong. I guess he figured a way out of that. But either way were gonna keep plugging along or trotting at this rate :)
  2. Well I worried that because he was redoing it right away it was more of a memorizing the correct answer for the moment. Instead of redoing the next day like before where he would actaully have to of learned it.
  3. We have really liked it so far. Just not sure how to figure this part out or if it even needs figured out?
  4. On book 2 my son took 226 units to get to 100% (book three). So I was a bit surprised that when I checked on his work on day 2 & 3 of book three to see him at 14 units & 53% already? I thought I better watch him do this, he must really know what he is doing or its broken :) As I began to watch I seen he had figured out that if he gets one wrong during a unit he just pushes stop (not pause) and play again and it restarts the unit he is on. So he is able to get a butterfly each time. So he is getting perfect scores and will be through book 3 in 5 days. I wasnt sure how to think of this because he is still doing the work? I called explode the code support and they were no help?? I dont think the guy knew what I was talking about. I asked if there was someone else but he said, he was the correct person. I doubt my son is the first to figure this out and I was hoping to talk to someone who knew what I was speaking of or parents who have also come across this? IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO KNOWS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT OR MAYBE SOMEWHERE ELSE TO ASK? THANK YOU
  5. Were just beginning shurley english 1. My boys are 7 & 8. It looks like the first 4 chapters are about grouping in ways my boys would already understand. Does anyone think its okay to just skip them and start in week 5?
  6. Does anyone know how long the lessons take for planning purposes? Thanks
  7. Okay that clears a lot up for me, thank you. We are beginning shurley 1. When I do start the diagramming one problem for me to do one a day would be that I have no idea how to diagram :) I definatly need some help or something to follow to teach them. But I do like the one a day thing, seems very managable. Do you know of a good supplement for diagramming for mommies like me?
  8. Im starting Shurley English and I want to also supplement diagramming at some point. When would be a good time to do that?
  9. I will have Shurley and PAL / IEW, both have writing to go along with them. I was thinking of just using one of them for the writing portion and not both. Does anyone have recomendations for either?
  10. Thank you, so Shurley is good to go with and later on at some point I can bring in diagramming. Is there a recommended age for that or level for a person who does want to introduce it?
  11. Is one more thourough than the other on grammar? I hope Im using the word thourough correctly. Im wondering if both done fully does one produce a more educated person at the end in grammar?? I hope Im making sense :)
  12. I think I get what diagramming is... Yes sad I know. I will be learning with my littles. But I was going to go with shurley english and I keep seeing people say that shurley does not diagram but that diagramming is important. So what does shurley do instead?? Will I need another curriculum to get diagramming in? If Shurley does not diagram then is it not a thourough program for grammar??
  13. Thank you everyone. Tara, I think I do understand a bit more, thank you for explaining that. My boys have already gone through rod & staff 1st grade but their reading, phonics are very weak. My oldest when I asked him what he thougth of reading he said, "I hate it". He doesnt usually say these things unless he means it. I realized we struggled all year. He hates to sound words out and so almost always guesses and I have to make him sound it out while he is dreading it. So I was thinking of stepping backwards a bit and getting their phonics and reading going better. So I was thinking of ETC, AAS w/ Shurley english, w/ a few phonics games. But I wasnt sure if I still needed to add some phonics or not?? It gets so confusing when some people will say ETC (online) is "reading not phonics" and then when I pull it up and watch their website they call it "phonics"?? I was also thinking of adding PAL because it would for sure have phonics, work on their handwriting and also some games???

  15. thanks for the replys. They are 7 1/2 & 8 1/2. We have actaully done 1st grade rod & staff but they are not reading well. My 7 1/2 reads better than my 8 1/2. My 8 1/2 told me he hates reading (I didnt realize how much) and when I woke up I realized we had struggled through it all year. He hates sounding out so he guesses most of the time. So I thought I should take a different route to inspire them again and get them reading well. Phonics are also weak in my opinion so I did want work on that but from what I seem to be reading AAS & ETC should be enough to refresh and memorize them??? Maybe play phonics games. I was thinking the farm stickers & games from PAL? I have also thought of adding the whole PAL because it does have writing, phonics and also at the beginning she works on letters and someone said it helped there children's print to look better and it wouldnt hurt to clean that up either. They are good at "handwriting" the subject but you should see their workbooks. The letters are just all over the place and sloppy. When I tell them to slow down and try they do well but it does take a long time.
  16. Explode the code All about spelling Shurley or Rod & staff english Is this complete for teaching reading, phonics, grammar, spelling?
  17. Is AAS also phonics? OR will I need that extra?
  18. What are the differences between these two. If anyone has used both of them which one did you like better and why?? Thanks for the help.
  19. Please help give me opinions on this program?? I've seen some good things said about it and actaully none bad. I would love to hear more of users thoughts! Thanks!!
