  1. We do history about twice a week. We read sec.1 or sec. 1&2 if there are more than 2 sections in a chapter the first day. The girls color the coloring sheet as I read. Then we verbally do the questions from the A.G. Then I write down dd's narration. She copies it in nice handwriting for her notebook. When we started the year, she only had to copy one sentence, but her handwriting abilities are better now.

We read the supplementary books at different times, sometimes we will look at one or read a short one after this. Then throughout the week we read them as bedtime stories, and dd reads a lot of them to herself.

The 2nd session of history, we do the same as above, and also the mapwork. We don't always do a hands on project. But the ones we have done, we love. They are usually just something we do in free time or as our art for the week, depending on what it is.

  2. There is a great, FREE, supplemental source for SOTW 1 here. I'm using some of the pages (narration page, project page) for the notebook I'm compiling for SOTW

This is amazing! We are on chp. 32 of vol. 1, and I wish I had had this the whole year.

Do you know if anything like this exists for vol 2?? Thanks for the link.

  3. I have a 4 and a 6 yr old. We started it for my 6 yr old's 1st grade this year. Yes, dd 4 listens in, and gains some general knowledge. I do not require anything except that she is in the room. I offer her the coloring pages which she sometimes does and I put in her special notebook. She helps out with any crafts or activities, and hears all additional reading books.

She will be K next year and my then 2nd grader will move into SOTW2. She will continue to tag along as she has been. I forgot to mention that she likes to try to answer the questions at the end also.

I will start her 1st grade year when they are both in SOTW 3. At that time is when her official rotation will begin. I went back and forth about this, but re read the chapter in the WTM about combining different ages, and this is what she suggests.

  4. 2nd Grade:

    Rod and Staff Math 3

    Rod and Staff English 2

    Rod and Staff Phonics 2

    Rod and Staff Penmanship 2

Reading: SOTW suggestions, and Classical book lists

Rod and Staff Music 2 and What Your 2nd Grader Needs to Know

SOTW 2 w/A.G, Kingfisher Encyclopedia, and library books

Earth Science and Astronomy, notebooking using Usborne Encyclopedias, and library books

Art: What Your 2nd Grader Needs to Know and SOTW 2 projects

    K:

    Bob Books

Finish Rod and Staff ABC Workbooks

    Rod and Staff math 1

2nd semester: Unit 1 of Rod and Staff 1st grade phonics and reading

Tag along in history, science, art, & music

  5. We like the Rod and Staff ABC series of workbooks. My 4 yr old started them this year and will finish up during K. But it sounds like you have a ton of curric already :) We also like Bob books for beginning reading, but it depends on how close he is to reading.. My 4 yr old is just now starting them and is almost 5.

  6. My books are all ordered or here.

    Rod and Staff Math 3

    R&S English 2

R&S Phonics 2... I went back and forth here, and finally ordered it. I am not sure on this, and haven't chosen any spelling yet.

    R&S Penmanship 2

R&S Music 2, supplement w/What Your 2nd Grader Needs to Know

Art: SOTW2 projects and from WY2GNTK

    History: SOTW 2 w/AG

Science: Earth Science and Astronomy. I ordered the Usborne First Encyclopedias of Earth and Astronomy and the Magic Schoolbus Lost in Space so far.

Literature: Selections from SOTW2, 1000 Great Books, and What Your 2nd Grader Needs to Know. Possibly the Little House books, some American Girl and Magic Treehouse for fun reading.

  7. Hi, I am usually just a lurker. But we are finishing up 1st grade here. We have had a great year:

Math: Rod and Staff grade 2

L.A. Rod and Staff grade 1 reading and phonics (We started this in K and have done it 2-3 times a week.)

    History: SOTW vol. 1 w/AG

Science: WTM style. Notebooked on Animals, Human Body (w/Usborne First Encyclopedia of the Human Body.. very good spine.) and we are starting plants. I did just order R&S grade 2 Science to check it out. We may use this to finish up the year. I believe it is mostly plants and nature. If not I will pick up an Usborne Science or Plants Encyclopedia.

Music: Rod and Staff grade 1 and followed What Your First Grader Needs to Know

Art: What Your First Grader Needs to Know and SOTW suggestions.

I love everything we have done. Using WYFGNTK as a spine for art and music is just enough to supplement our other studies. HTH!

  8. Not that one, but ours does have R&S too. I just wanted the sale, because even w/shipping I save a little over full price.

That is a good idea though. I can order everything else now except the phonics. Then go and look at the spelling and decide there. I just want to be done already:001_smile: Thanks for "listening!"

  9. Ok, I am still thinking about this. The issue is that I need to place my order for R&S before the textbook sale is up in 2 wks, and our convention is not until May for me to get my hands on any other spelling programs to really look through.

So here are the thoughts I have had since this morning:

I could go ahead and start Spelling Power, but continue w/ R&S phonics 2 so we don't miss any rules that I may not be aware of.

Or I could go ahead w/R&S phonics 2 and pick up some other spelling (but which?) for the year and start Spelling Power next year. Maybe spectrum or something like that just for this year, or just don't buy spelling and continue giving words from her phonics each day.

Or I could find a Spelling program that would incorporate phonics and drop the R&S phonics.

    Any other suggestions?

  10. Thank you. I had assumed the groups were following a certain rule. But since it is geared toward starting in 3rd, and she would definitely be ready for any other 3rd grade program I have looked at, it still may not be an issue. It is definitely something to consider. She does well with the R&S 1st grade phonics spelling suggestions. I read words from the reading list in her workbook. Then she writes any misspellings 3 times and then I use those words and new ones the next day. Since this is similar to SP's method, I thought it might be a good fit.

ETA.. and AAS was my next choice also. I don't have a copy of WTM here. I have preordered the new one, and the library's copy is checked out. Isn't AAS the one that is suggested in place of phonics? Am I way off base? It has been a while since I looked at 2nd grade.

  11. Hi, I have been reading here forever, but have never posted. I am trying to plan my dd6's (will be 7 then) 2nd grade year for the fall. She is currently finishing up R&S 1st grade phonics and reading. I had planned on moving up into the 2nd grade English, Phonics, and Spelling. But upon review, she is way beyond the spelling, and I can't move her up into 3rd grade because it is in cursive. I am now leaning towards Spelling Power.

My question is will Spelling Power be enough to get rid of the Phonics? I don't want overkill, but don't want to miss anything either. She is an exceptional reader, and has written and spelled well for over a year. Curious if anyone has any thoughts about this. TIA! Carle

    Here would be our year:

Reading will be good books and Sotw suggestions

    R&S English 2

    R&S Math 3

    R&S music 2

    R&S penmanship to start cursive

    SOTW 2

    Science, Astronomy/Earth Science
