  1. This is what we're doing.

    English I – 1 credit:

Writer’s Inc: A Student Handbook for Writing and Learning

Writer’s Inc: Daily Language Workouts 9th Grade

Weekly writing assignments based on prompts here and other places. I’ll be listing our own prompts as well.

Various Literature Selections with Study Guides

    SAT Vocabulary

    Word Power Made Easy

Hopefully I won't change this before fall. LOL

  2. My son has poor speech, and as homeschoolers we don't have access to free speech therapy. His vocabulary is wonderful, his hearing is okay, he just has trouble making some very important sounds. CH, SH, Z, G. It's almost like he doesn't know where to put his tongue to make the sounds. Our insurance won't cover speech therapy.

Does anyone know of something I could use at home to help him? I know with speech therapy the therapist will usually give the parent stuff to work with them at home. Anything like that?

  3. Nan can tell you more about this, but there is a Nature Study course for high schoolers through Mother of Divine Grace which looks very good and can be quite secular. I never used it but had it bookmarked for years.

Cornell University, through Project Feeder Watch has an ornithology course which homeschoolers can use -- it may be more than your dd wants. But nature studies can be part of biology, art and English courses.

My ds became an avid bird watcher through participating in Project Feeder Watch, a "citizen science" activity that runs from November through April, I believe. There are also similar bee counts and urban bird count citizen science activities -- where non-scientists report their counts and observations. All if it is wonderful for a high schooler.

    Thank you so much!

  4. I tried it. For $5 you can't beat it. I wouldn't pay full price, however. It is very much a public school, workbooky approach. Even that isn't bad all of the time, but this particular website loads very very slowly and I find that annoying when I'm poking around looking to put lessons together. I did email their customer support also and got no response. Red flag there.

Did you notice that you will be automatically renewed for the next year at full price without notice? You may want to go into your account and change that.........

I noticed the automatic renewal. I canceled it right away!

If you can, take a look at the 10th grade Biology. Each lesson was about 1 or 2 pages long. Barely any reading.

CK-12 is a lot better in that department. I honestly think CK-12 looks VERY good so far. We'll see how I feel once I start actually planning lessons though. LOL

I'm using the Earth Science for my 5th and 7th grader.

  5. I wondered what opinions would be. I see what your daughter thought of it. My curiosity was for the elementary set. We have come to a point where I may have to consider more online/free curricula. I tried to view the samples for the younger elementary set but couldn't gain idea of what's in the curricula.

Here's an example of second grade science. http://withlovero.com/7350.pdf

What grades are you interested in?

  6. Does anyone have a subscription? I looked at the site but couldn't really access the samples. It sounds good, but I've wondered if it's one of those you get what you pay for kind of things.

I do. What are you wondering about specifically?

I think I'd use it if I was in a bind. Low money. No access to good books. It seems pretty standard (public school like). Everything is workbook format, but the lessons are too short in my opinion. I asked my 9th grader if she wanted to use it for biology and she said it seemed way too easy.

But for 5 bucks...I guess you can't beat it.

  7. I tried to figure out what exactly this was. It seems to be that someone just pulled together free resources already out there. Not saying that's not worth $4.95 for the effort, but I do believe much of that stuff is out there for free anyway.

    I don't think that's true.

I've looked at this quite a bit, and decided not to use it at all with my high schooler. The material seems to be below grade level.

I haven't decided for my 5th and 7th grader. Still looking at it. It's definitely a good deal. Unfortunately, you can't download and the website is sometimes slow or totally down. I emailed them about this and it went ignored. Customer service goes a long way in my book.

  8. It looks thorough and interesting to me!

    Thanks!

I think the total number of credits is good, and the variety of subjects is good (tilted towards classical, but this is the WTM board).

In some places, you seem to have doubled-up on curriculum (i.e. 2 vocabulary resources, 2 sets of videos each in history and math, literature assignments in both history and English, 5 resources for a .5 credit course in art history). You should think about your learning goals and pick-and-choose from your resources to keep the total amount of work reasonable. A high school credit is about 120 to 180 hours of work.

I think if you do detailed planning and see how many pages of reading, how many hours of video, and how many assignments per week all these resources will require, it will help you see if you have overbooked a subject.

    --Janet

Hi Janet! Thanks for taking the time to look. The reason I have 2 resources for some subjects is in case something doesn't work for us. For instance, with math. If the Khan videos aren't helping, maybe the DIVE videos will be more useful. We won't watch or do everything, but like to be able to pick and choose sometimes.

With the art, that's actually a curriculum and it requires those books and DVDs. It may be too much for half of a credit. I'll have to look at it closer when I get it.

  9. Are you doing any review for SOTW? I find that a little review goes a long way. Do the newer editions have the review cards in the back? (I have the first ed.) We colored those in and spent 10-20 minutes reviewing each week.

I personally have abandoned TOG at the lower levels after 2 years of using it. After using SOTW for 8 years, I thought I wanted a change, but I find that, for us at least, nothing compares to SOTW for the younger set. TOG felt chaotic and choppy for me. I like having a spine, reading one overarching story, and then adding in additional books, maps, and activities. Easy peasy. It gets done, and with a bit f review all of my children have retained enough info. to satisfy me. Remember, at this age you are simply establishing the pegs to hand future info. on.

    :iagree:

I abandoned TOG after 1 year for the same reasons.
