Particularly for Australia where we have only just started boosters and our most vulnerable are six months plus. And we are in full learn to live with the virus (and die with the virus 😬) mode apparently.

I saw one tiny study 3 months post booster and it was way back under 50%.  I hope every one goes to get a booster, but that just isn't going to be enough.  We need to get hard core on masks, ventilation, and testing or people will be dying in the parking lot waiting to get into the er.  There isn't 100 days to develop a booster before things get serious.  I honestly can't believe there isn't more alarm here in the states.

  2. Lots of organic fruits and veggies, shooting for 2 hours per day outside, daily kefir for probiotics, milk or yogurt for vit d.  I wear a kf94 and use xlear spray before going indoors (masked) with other people.  We also run air purifiers in common areas.  We also have anyone who has been in a group situation use mouthwash a few times a day to hopefully reduce the viral load they might out out if asymptomic.

I find the results of this study extremely confusing. They appear to be using blood samples from 8 different groups, that were collected as part of 4 different (very small) studies in 4 different places, and which included people of vastly different ages — like the average age of one group was 28 and another was 87.5!

This is the part that confuses me:

"Neutralization performed with sera from double (non-boosted) or triple BNT162b2-vaccinated (sampled 0.5 or 3 months after boosting) revealed an 11.4- , 37.0- and 24.5-fold reduction, respectively (Figure 1A). Sera from double mRNA1273-vaccinated (non-boosted) and additionally BNT162b2- boosted showed a 20- and 22.7-fold reduction in the neutralization capacity (Figure 1B). Poor neutralization against Delta and no efficacy against Omicron were observed using sera from heterologous ChAdOx1 and BNT162b2 vaccinated individuals (Figure 1C). Additionally BNT162b2-boosted individuals showed a significant increase of NAb titers but a 27.1-fold reduction in neutralization against Omicron. (Figure 1C). Convalescent sera poorly neutralize VoCs, however in combination with vaccination provides superior protection. Neutralization of Omicron was 32.8-fold reduced using sera from double BNT162b2 vaccinated and infected individuals (Figure 1D)."

So it looks like they are saying that 2 doses of Pfizer with no booster had the least reduction in efficacy (11.4-fold reduction), while 2 shots of Pfizer plus a booster had the greatest reduction in efficacy (37-fold)?? And then they say that previous infection plus vaccination "provides superior protection" — but the reduction in efficacy for previous infection plus 2 shots of Pfizer was the 2nd worst of all the groups (32.8-fold reduction)?? BTW, the group with previous infection + 2 shots of Pfizer ranged in age from 68 to 93.

Can someone who is more adept at reading the graphs in this preprint clarify what exactly they are saying? Is the fact that the blood samples were collected from different groups, of different ages, in different studies irrelevant, or is this data just a mishmash of results that are really not comparable to each other?

Here is the actual preprint: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.12.07.21267432v1.full.pdf

They are doing their fold calculations against delta efficacy with the same vax history instead of against wild type shortly after vaccination.  So they are comparing two shots effectiveness against delta to two shots effectiveness against omicron.  Since that combo sucks the most against delta to begin with it shows (only) 11 fold difference.  Since boosters are more effective against delta, but apparently still suck against omicron, that shows a higher fold difference.  I don't think this was the best choice in displaying the data.  I would guess it will be recalculated with peer review input.  This is not encouraging and I totally don't believe the Pfizer ceo.

  4. Does anyone know what study the Pfizer CEO is talking about that supposedly shows three doses against omicron is similar to two doses against wild type?  Is he using prior infection as a proxy for the third dose?

Re prior infection being a proxy for an additional dose:  it's my understanding that infection leads to a greater diversity in type of antibodies produced because they are produced to fit different places on the entire virus such as the n antibody that vaccinated people don't have.  Doesn't it make sense that previously infected people would be fighting a highly mutated virus better because they have more antibody diversity than people who only make antibodies to the spike?  Is my understanding off here?

The other thing from what I’m reading, is that while it shows significant reduction in neutralization, that’s after two vaccine doses, and three doses boost neutralization by a similar amount that this variant decreases it. So it seems possible that boosted versus omicron might be similar to two doses versus previous strains (clear as mud?). Also, this is pseudovirus in a lab and there are other things besides antibodies at play. So we won’t know what it does in the real world until more time has gone past.

The anecdotal data from the Christmas parties in Norway and Spain have me feeling pretty pessimistic about boosters bringing it up.  At least it is looking less severe though.

  6. DS8 and DD10 got second doses on Wednesday.  DS had a slightly sore arm the following morning.  It was gone by lunch and he had no other symptoms.  DD had a very sore arm the entire next day and a bad headache in the evening.  She slept until 11 the following (Fri) morning.  She also had mild lymph node swelling and tenderness in the underarm area on the shot side beginning about 24 hours after shot.  We treated with ibuprofen and ice.  It resolved after about a day and a half.

He admitted murder, he just argued it was justified, and the jury agreed with him. And he’d have no grounds for a lawsuit because he posed for pictures with white supremacists. I think everyone in a socialist group are morons who need history lessons, but it’s not illegal to be dumb or to voice upset at what they consider injustice.

I guess that is a question of how you define murder.  To me and my dictionary, it is the unlawful killing of another person.  It's not in dispute that he killed them, but because it has been ruled as justified, it is definitively not murder, which means their public assertions that he is a murderer are  false.

They are free to say what they want, but it would be good to cleave to principle. I'm pretty sure that we're not supposed to treat acquitted persons as if they are criminals. Whether or not you like them and approve/disapprove of their actions. Besides anything else, if you want a person to rehabilitate themselves, you don't block their efforts to get an education.

Yes, and in this case, he might be able to sue the crap out of them for calling him a murdered since he has been acquitted.  I'm not sure if the organization is publicly funded (probably If it's sponsored by ASU), but if so, it does seem inappropriate to issue a statement from such an organization rather than have it come from a student's personal, individual opinon.

  9. The link in YLE post says vaccines are still pretty effective (yay) but also unvaccinated are more likely to be severely ill (boo).

And also a case in fully vaccinated Minnesotan who traveled from NYC but never left the country...

Kids had their second shots yesterday.  DS6 complained of leg aches this morning but I sent him to school anyway. He was sent home around a half hour later with a 100.1 degree temperature.  He’s slept all day.  The other two kids, ages 11 and 9, have had a sore arm but nothing else.

I was wondering how that would work if a kid have a fever from the vax.  I'm worried dd will be flagged at her extracurricular activity tomorrow where they tell scan everyone at the door.  They just treated him as if he were sick?

But wasn't it discovered in the Netherlands before it was found in South Africa?  I could totally get on board with banning all international travel, or requiring all people returning to quarantine in hotels like Australia and New Zealand do.  That could buy time.  And maybe it's justified if it's super widespread in South Africa.  But I have concerns about singling out these African countries and not other countries where omicron has been found to be.  It seems likely at best to disincentivize variant testing and at worst it seems racist.

And I'm not an expert, and maybe it does make sense, if we know there's loads of community spread in South Africa and all the other worldwide cases are traced to African travel.  I just worry that it's a repeat of the Wuhan ban but leaving the rest of the doors wide open.

The Netherlands case had just returned from a flight from South Africa.  Regardless, I'd rather tighten testing and quarantine protocols than ban travel from a handful of countries.

From what I've been reading, because this is a tweak rather than a whole new vaccine, it will not have to go through the full trials and they (both Pfizer and Moderna) are saying 100 days/ 3 months to get a new version shipping and going in arms once they commit to developing it. Apparently this is more like tweaking the yearly flu vax, which I also don't believe goes through full new-vax trials every year.  All along, they've been saying one of the benefits of the mRNA technology is the ability to rapidly adapt it to new variants.

Yes, this is what I read too and also that they would only need 24 trial participants.  It's unclear though, if this is for 5+ or just adults.  My youngers are scheduled for second doses today and I'm not keen on getting a third dose in three months, especially for the boys.

Do you have more info on this?  Have you done it? Or known anyone that has?  I haven't heard of 12 -17 year olds getting boosted at all.

My 12 yo is only at 4 months but I expect the cdc to drag it's enormous, unwieldy feet in approving boosters for them.  I'm sure it will be about two months late.  Whether or not I will be able to boost him at 6 months is a factor in my decision on when to schedule my younger kids for their second dose, so I've been looking into my options.  This would not technically be a booster, so no, you wouldn't have heard of it.  It would technically be an additional dose in the primary series for someone who is immune compromised.

Can you please give a link to the US self-attestation?

It's just a box you check when you schedule at CVS or Walgreens.  Other places probably have a similar setup.  I can't really link it because you have to enter things like dob and date of last dose before you get to that part.

  15. Israel began boosting 12+ in August for anyone five months since the second dose.  I haven't heard of ill effects of a change in policy since then so I presume they aren't having big issues with side effects.  In the US 12+ can get an additional dose via self-attestation of immune compromised condition.  Some parents might "misunderstand" or interpret too broadly what constitutes immune compromised.  I think I've read that eczema and allergies are both related to immune dysfunction.

  16. DH got a Modern a booster on Monday.  He had Moderna initially as well.  He had fever and chills for about 24 hours starting late that evening.  He also had fatigue and muscle aches.  Today (48 hrs) he is mostly better, just a bit slow.  He waited until he had a whole week off because of how bad his first 2 shots were.  Iirc it was about 10 days of flu like symptoms the first time and 4 days the second time.

I am trying to decide whether to get a Pfizer or Moderna booster for DS23 with special needs. He had his second Moderna in mid-April. I don't think he had much in the way of side effects, but it's hard to say as he is mostly non-verbal. He did have some difficult behaviors the day after each dose, but they really only lasted for about 30 minutes and could be entirely unrelated. I am considering Pfizer for his booster because Moderna has a higher risk of myocarditis in males under 30. However, Moderna is a known quantity for him. Is it at all likely that he could have worse side effects after Pfizer than Moderna?

I am not worried about the shot itself. He does okay with shots and we will arrange for our local pharmacist to come out to the car to give it. I am more concerned about side effects that he won't be able to tell us about. DH, DD, and I all had Pfizer so I know less about Moderna side effects, if there is even any difference.

If you scroll down in this https://yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/mixing-vaccines-the-study-weve-all

there is a comparison of side effects and intensity.  It's from page 26 of the mix and match study, which you can find linked toward the top of the page.

    Three caveats:

    1.  The Pfizer boost group had a longer period of time between second dose and booster than the Moderna boost group, which would generally reduce side effects.

    2.  The moderna boost was the original 100 micrograms dose instead of the 50 micrograms boost that they are using now, which would generally intensity side effects.

    3.  The sample size is too underpowered to put a lot of stock in small differences.

With that said it seems like side effects are directly related to the dose for the mrna vaccines.  The 5-11 year olds getting 10 micrograms have way fewer side effects than the teens getting 30 micrograms and moderna is associated with a higher rate of myocarditis than pfizer.  All that to say, if he were my son, I'd do the Pfizer, but I don't think there are really any bad choices here.

  18. Here is an article from September addressing the backlog.  This is not a one-off case and It's not due to the jails being full of non-violent offenders.

    https://www.wisconsinrightnow.com/2021/09/18/milwaukee-county-criminal-courts/?amp=1&fbclid=IwAR1BLug5dM6a7V2mF6K59rIdOCQQeTfw8JdJ8MfUlM8uXWxrjRH7MC1FbQw

DH used to work near where this happened.  He's been beside himself all day.  Lemanski's comments about karma for Rittenhouse just about sent him off he deep end.  I'm glad to see she realized she's a stupid b* and resigned.

The article I read said he was out on $1,000 bail.  I would like to know why $1,000 bail was considered appropriate for a guy with the charges and criminal history this guy had before he did this.

It does sound like this was not pre-planned, but I'm not gonna call it an accident either.

They had another big trial going and couldn't fulfill the right to a speedy trial, so they lowered it to something he could pay.

  20. Novare earth science might work.  It is less hands on than rso, but checks the box on everything else.  It's intended as a full year course and includes some astronomy, just the first chapter.  The geology and meteorology is really in depth.  My son has commented several times how much he likes it. It is labeled as "Christian" and is not ye.  We are Catholic also and my degree is in biology and chemistry.  This is actual science.

I’m not sure how/why they could possibly have been bewildered given their public socializing with actual white nationalists. The cynic in me says that may have been to fund the defense but that did, in fact, happen. They also authorized RW media to basically shadow him throughout the case. He was photographed flashing proud boys hand signals. It’s not a figment of public imagination that his cause was championed by some really, really bad actors and the family embraced/accepted that support. Maybe it’s just the ultimate grift. Who knows. It’s clear that it wasn’t some misapprehension. They embraced the characters sending $$$ their way. 🤷🏽‍♀️

The judge disallowed the proud boys photo because the evidence available suggested he didn't know who they were and it just turned out the were in the same place and wanted a photo.  I've only ever known that sign to mean anything other than ok and the same goes for every white person I discussed the symbol with.  They looked really hard for race related stuff and didn't find any.  I guess you could say the judge is just racist and lying about the evidence and the prosecutor is just racist and so pretended not to find anything.

The Democratic governor and mayor are the ones who did nothing while a majority poc neighborhood burned.  A black woman with her kids were trapped in a burning apartment.  Many of the businesses were minority-owned.  The people in that neighborhood are no longer able to get the things they need without taking a bus to somewhere much farther.  The business Rittenhouse was at was poc-owned.  He was literally putting out fires set by white people to try to protect a poc owned business.

The only reason it might be surprising to you is because the media has gone out of their way to portray him as racist.  You can't blame someone for letting a different media get some truth out when the other available media is just calling you a white supremacist.

  22. Sorry, that stinks.  We have a tale of some too:

DS had his toiletry bag fall out of his main bag upon leaving a family member's hunting cabin.  We are four and a half hours from the cabin and the family member who owns it is also four hours but 3 hours from us like a triangle.  Didn't realize it was gone till he was home.  We ended up finding a trusted person 45 minutes away, gave info on how to get into by he cabin, and the person overnighted it to us.
