  1. Too funny! The same thing happened to my oldest daughter. Her name can go either male or female. The "university" teamed her with a male roommate. We found out via a school facebook forum that was set up for students to meet each other. My dd asked if anyone knew her roommate XXXX and another female freshman LOL'd in the forum and responded, "Yes, he graduated with me." We immediately got on the phone with Housing. They admitted that they didn't look at the gender of my dd on the app because based on her name in those parts, it's a boy's name. :)
  2. This is so encouraging. I needed that PAT. I know in my heart that this is the right thing for our youngest dd. Our home has been at such peace since we started. It's nice to hear of the progress of your oldest.
  3. I am not going to outsource everything. It's just that thinking about high school made me nervous a bit. I want to ensure that I don't cheat my youngest dd. Sometimes I simply need assurance and support that I am challenging her and doing the right thing. I do have some good news! In the last 4.5 months, we've already seen great progress and confidence in her writing. She's never liked to read or write. You've given me some add'l ideas.
  4. Thank you so much! This is very helpful to know. I heard of Landry from a homeschool mom of 6 children w/2 in college (honors) so I figured she must be doing something right. She also spoke highly of CurrClick. Once I got home and started searching, I got sooooo confused. It can be overwhelming. I enrolled dd in eng lit with Landry on yesterday after speaking with them. You also receive a discount if you enrolled by today. I am going to check out the sites you mentioned this afternoon.
  5. Thank you, Kendall! My dd was in private school, where she had earth science (6), life science (7) and physical science (8). Of course, we pulled her out at the end of fall 2011. When we took her out (mostly because English and History weren't rising to our standards), I didn't feel I was prepared to teach Physical Science and wanted her to continue on the path of a classroom setting (at that time; seems like centuries ago). I wasn't aware of all of the online resources. So I enrolled her with tutors at the local homeschool group. The tutors teach in a classroom setting. As well, my dd thrives with other students; otherwise, she is very shy. Long story short, the science class focused more on earth science. That's because in GA, the brick-and-mortar schools begin 9th grade with Physical Science, unless the student has had it (usually in private or homeschool) in the 8th grade and can carry it over. I was torn about beginning her with Biology since she didn't quite finish Physical Science. I would love to find a summer curriculum to review Physical Science and labs with her so we can raise her to a full credit. It does seem a shame to start over and she reminds me of that. :) Now that I am writing this and seeing your comments, I am realizing that it's really up to us. You all will have to work with me on this journey. I admire all of you. Just by asking me some tough questions, you've helped me to think this through more. BTW, I work in higher ed and still get the 'are you sure you know what you're doing?" look from our extended family.
  6. Hi all -- I am new a homeschool mom as of January 2012, when we decided (after much prayer) to homeschool our 8th grader. She was doing well by the school's standards but we needed and wanted more. She wanted more also. I supplemented this term with tutors from a homeschool center for the core subjects (pre-algebra, english, writing as a separate class, science, and history). Now I'm in the midst of preparing everything for 9th grade. It's so hard! I never knew there were so many resources for homeschoolers. I am taking care of Health, Algebra 1 and Art but am having a hard time with the below and could use some help...please: Physical Science -- trying to decide between Landry Academy and Currclick -- help please Spanish 1 - anyone have feedback on Currclick or have suggestions English 301 - Landry Academy (anyone have experience with them); it's pricey but the description of what's covered looks really good. I've looked at a zillion resources online. Now I am confused. Can you please help me?
  7. I would like to know if anyone has any feedback on English with Landry Academy. The instructor is Marilyn Whitlock, also. I am a new homeschool mom. This spring was my first term and I supplemented with tutors from a nearby homeschool group. She'll be in the 9th grade next year and want to ensure she has a solid English foundation with grammar and writing as the core. Thanks in advance.
