They range from two to four hours away. Seeing the dorm would be helpful for sure and the surrounding community, safety issues. etc. Also if there are any students on campus. Good stuff I hadn't thought of.

Oldest daughter has "narrowed" her college list to about 10 colleges. She has only visited two and she will be a senior this year.
I hesitate to visit any colleges in the summer because it seems like you can't glean much without the students and professors there and ongoing classes to observe.
However with a list this long, maybe we should visit a couple more before school starts so her senior year isn't so jammed with first time visits...
What can you really learn on a summer visit?
Furthest one away is only just over four hours.
Thanks for any input.

I'm sorry that your son was ill and I'm glad to hear he is improving. You are saying that the local p.s. won't pay for community college?
I think either option is preferable to moving away. I would ask him and of course ask yourself, given he's been ill, where does he see his peer group now, at the h.s. or more at the local c.c. level?
If his maturity level is more at the h.s. level, I would do that, but hopefully with some p.s. payment on c.c. tuition.
I realize often there is not a big leap in maturity from h.s. to c.c., but the workload at least in theory, should be tougher at the c.c. level, and that should be taken into account too. How geared up is he stress and health wise for a harder workload?
One more thing, to consider is possibly there is less social stress to deal with at the h.s. than at the c.c. I'm not positive about this, but it seems that all those cliques tend to fade away after h.s.
Best wishes to you as you sort this out.

I know they are becoming more rare because of the rule change allowing freshman eligibity for varsity. But fortunately, we do have several in our area.

One of our oldest is considering these 4 schools. We will be cramming some visits in the fall. Can anyone with knowledge or experience with these schools give some input? How do they compare to one another? Her plan at least for now, is to be a humanities major.
In her words...she wants a serious liberal arts school where the students are serious.

I assume that most if not all of the college weight rooms and cardio rooms are also open to students who are not on an athletic team. Maybe this isn't always true, bc I did see one college where the weight room was only open to varsity athletes and they had another one for JVers. Not sure what that college offered to non-athletes.
Anyway, what about indoor and outdoor tracks? Are they open to non track team members when the team is not practicing/training?
Thank you

Does anyone have a son or daughter playing on a JV team at their college for any sport?
I have a son who might want to park himself at the JV college level for less stress, but I don't know if the JV level would really make a difference in that.
Are all JV players striving for the Vars. team or are some ok with playing there for their college career? Any other input would be helpful too.
Thanks.

Which is the best order now for the redesigned tests?
Geometry still before Alg. 2 or other way around?

Thanks Sue!
This is all very helpful, including the link.
Yes the coach does rotate subs pretty methodically. I've not seen it quite like this before.

Yes. Not looking for scholarships, but the chance to keep playing. If he really excels his last two years, then he might try to get a small one at an NAIA school.

Well AAU is the equivalent for club ball here. It's basketball for him and he's been doing it, but it's just a spring thing.

Son had been playing homeschool basketball for a few years and has developed well beyond his teammates by doing AAU, public school scrimmages etc. This homeschool team is more like rec level. Nice kids but the coaching is literally not there. There are no other homeschool teams in our area. It's a very small team, so he plays the whole game and is standing out in a good way there, but the team isn't going places if you kwim.
Meanwhile, he's joined up with the public school for all their summer scrimmages. He's doing fine, they could use him for his height, but it's a huge team with lots of talent, so even though he would might be a varsity starter, there will be less playing time as subs are constantly rotated in with this p.s. team. Pretty even talent on this team across the board, but it's a huge team.
He wants to keep the possibility of playing in college, at a D3 school open.
Should he go back to the homeschool team and be a big fish in a little pond, or one of many with lots of talent on a big team? He's really not sure what he wants to do.
Please don't quote this post. Thanks.

Yes, I was going to say the same thing. I believe that's a side effect of many SSRIs, reduced drive.

Yes I found someone too that I really like just the other day. So how much is a haircut where you all are?
Here it was $45. Ok that's not really bad, but we had daughter's cut the same day, so it felt spendy. :-)

I went threw the same stress at the salon a couple of days ago! And I do remember my mom telling me that rule as I grew up. I tipped her but stressed about how much...15%? 20%? I tipped 18% and it was already really spendy.

What does a professional evaluation for ADHD consist of?

Rising senior here too. And me with a big lump in my throat now...
-
Yes they need to be registered at the local school and take some classes part time, even if they are offered online.

I'm with ya Sue! I outnumbered by lots of testosterone here too. :-)

Part of me wishes I never heard this stuff. I was just about to sign him up when I found it all out. Immediately I needed to put the brakes on and reasses whether we do this at all. At the same time, this is someone else's experience. So his mileage will hopefully vary and trying it over the summer will give us a peek through the window before making a yearlong commitment.
Would you have had your son go that route Sue if you knew that stuff before his basketball career began at the h.s.?

I kept wondering if he said something about you afterwards to her indicating he was attracted to you. I agree with the others, it's not the religion issue, but marital issues.

This is for a son who wants to explore playing varsity sports at the local public school. He's been told he would make the team, but wants to make sure it will be good for him given there may be some pretty serious locker room stuff he may not want to deal with.
He could enroll and scrimmage with the team for the summer and should be able to figure out by then if this will work. If not he'd need to promptly withdraw from the school before fall as the only reason he's considering it is for the sports.
Might tick some people off, but maybe not, as it just opens a spot for another player.
Anyone have any experience with this scenario or input?

Exactly Tara. Say goodbye to all heros and folks who do the right thing if they need to examine their social index before standing up.

Are summer college visits worth it?

Great points. As mentioned, the food and athletic facilities would be super important to her.
She'd like to meet a prof. or dept. head.
She really wants to sit In on a class. But unless they have summer classes, that would have to wait until fall.
