  1. Sorry to hijack this thread. I'm looking for something to help my struggling 12 year old reader. English is his second language and his exposure to English has been through multiple sporadic school placements until the past two years when he was in foster care and attended a great school. I'm still finding he is "missing" many language skills. I tried going back to teach phonics and he is still struggling with vowel sounds. I am interested to know specifically what I would need to order from the McCall-Crabbs site. It looks a little overwhelming at first glance. Can you explain a little about how it works? TIA
  2. YES!!!! I have a very long story about Feingold so I will try to be brief. Our daughter has fetal alcohol syndrome. As a young child she had uncontrollable behaviors that made us consider institutionalization. :bored: By no coincidence I discovered Feingold and Dr Doris Rapp's book "Is This Your Child?" (highly recommend her as well) Within 24 hours of STRICT Feingold stage 1 and following Dr Rapp's advice (which for our daughter meant no dairy) we had a new daughter. It was truly something miraculous to witness. We did mess it up a few times feeling sorry for her missing out on things early on. What we found for her was one indiscretion made for a "reaction" within 20 minutes that lasted for 4 days. Ugh! We weren't doing her any favors allowing her off diet for treats. She is now 18 and had done amazingly well staying true to her diet until just last month. The good news is she is doing well trying foods that she hasn't had in over 10 years, although we are proceeding with caution. Please private message me if you have any questions.
  3. Eliminates all artificial flavors and colors and some preservatives. Also check out the book, Is This My Chilld by Doris Rapp, deals with allergies and behaviors. My daughter has been on Feingold diet and dairy free for close to 10 years and changed her (and our) life.
  4. These are great tips and suggestions. We have been told there are no IQ or other delays. His reason for being behind is that he has not regularly attended school in the past. He has been enrolled in PS for 1 year now that he has been in foster care. I'm sure he has made some gains in that time but I'm thinking at the very least an extra bit of one on one homeschooling time over the summer should be helpful for learning and bonding time. :001_smile: I will do my own research on the suggestions you have all provided here and choose what seems to meet his needs best. I'm hopeful we will be able to continue homeschooling when school goes back in the fall.
  5. Thank you for these suggestions and especially for the encouragement.
  6. Our family is hoping to adopt a wonderful boy who is currently in public school 3rd grade and struggles with reading. Due to his struggles in reading his other subjects are now beginning to suffer. He should be in 5th grade but is behind for reasons beyond his control. He does have a normal IQ and it is expected that he will be able to catch up in due time. I would greatly appreciate suggestions for materials. I have taught our girls all to read from scratch - no base line to build on. Because he has limited reading skills I'm not sure how to proceed, other than to find books on topics he is interested in and of course lots of reading aloud to him. I have considered going back and reteaching the basic letter sounds and seeing if there are gaps in his reading that could be addresssed. TIA.:)
