  1. We're in our 5th year and one thing I definitely would have done different it get my dd evaluated earlier for speech therapy. We waited until she was 8 because we were told "she'll grow out of it" by many of her peds. She didn't and it wasn't easy to change after all those years of just letting it go. She still has trouble with R at times, but we work with her at home now and it's getting much better. I also would have stood up for myself more when the PS system we had to use for her therapy was giving us a hard time about not enrolling her in their school, which is why we're doing any remaining therapy at home with the help of a friend who's now an SLP. I also wouldn't have let her reading slide because "she'll learn in her own time" Yes she did, but would have been served better had I pushed just a little bit.

    :iagree:

This is what I am struggling to come to terms with right now. I wish I had gone with my "gut" and listened less to others.

Given the problems that we have had, I wish I had found AAS sooner.

I wish we had been more consistent but even more, I wish I had seen our lack of consistency and our frustration (both mine and theirs) as a sign that we needed help.

At least, those are my thoughts today :001_smile:

  2. And I hate to add this, but I have had this percolating in the back of my mind.... I think there is a certain amount of anger that you are a woman. A successful, articulate, educated, well-respected woman.

Some people, and some certain types of men, get that all up in their craw.

So true! This is an excellent point and I am convinced that it is part of what is going on.

  3. This is so sad. I really don't know what to say. This entire situation has left me speechless. There has been a schism brewing for years in the homeschooling community. We felt it about 2 years ago locally over many of the same issues. This may be what we are seeing now on a national/global level.

I dont post often but have been on this forum for years. I am grateful to SWB and PHP for the freedom for thought and discussion that is allowed.

  4. Thank you so much! We are headed out for another day of testing today. We should be finished by tomorrow. I am finding it difficult to wait for the results. It was such a such a relief just to make the appointment. Now, it feels like torture waiting to get the results.

Thank you for your encouragement and support!

  5. We are currently in the middle of testing with our ds 10. Dyslexia and spatial dysgraphia are already identified. I suspect this week we will also find there is an auditory processing disorder, but that's just my guess. On one hand I feel relieved to finally know there really is something there. On the other hand, I feel overwhelmed about what this will mean in terms of the types of interventions that I will have to implement. Of course, we are still in testing and will be for several more days and I know that she is going to give us a detailed plan for intervention...still, I guess it's just the fear of the unknown.

I'm exhausted from teaching him. He is very smart and it's always been that it was right there and he just couldn't get it out. I feel like everyday I beat my head into the wall. He is such a sweet and intelligent boy and I feel like my lack of patience with him over the years has damaged him to the point of endless therapy. Of course, I know that's overdramatic but being a parent is really tough sometimes. I can only imagine the frustration he must have been feeling.

I have started reading on both of these topics and would be interested to hear any opinions or advice from parents who have BTDT.

  6. I'm signed up for Greenville. I'm so excited! :D

The only other hs convention that I've been to was SWB's in Williamsburg. It was fantastic! This convention has so many speakers that I have never heard irl and I can't wait! This is coming at a time when I really need the motivation and focus directed back to my home school energy. I have felt weary these last few months and I think this is just the ticket. :D

  7. My ds 8 has talked about nothing but robotics for years. My ds 10 has shown little interest in robotics but is crazy for Legos. We live in a small town and there is no FLL team and I have not been able to generate much interest from other hsers. So, I found a Lego robotics camp this past week. It was 3 full days and it was 2 hours away. We did the 3 day commute to see if there would be real interest. It was a long three days but I'm glad we did it! Both boys went head-over-heels for robotics!

At this point, I feel comfortable making the investment in the home education pack. We are a science heavy family and I really think we will use it. That is where we will start but the education catalog has several additional options for teaching. I am considering the NXT Video Trainer 2.0 as well. Does anyone have experience with this?

  8. Thank you all for the very thoughtful replies. I have taken your advice and separated them. I am going back to the later part of book 2 with my younger son and moving forward with my older in book 3. Spelling was becoming such a struggle. I think that had to do with the younger's frustration and needing to slow down, and the older's frustration of needing to move forward. I have to say that lessons went MUCH smoother since they were separated.

    Thank you again!

  9. Spelling was never getting done and we started AAS with both boys. It has been fantastic! My DS10 was a late reader and really struggled. We took level 1 slow and laid a really good foundation. As we progressed, I noticed that DS8 would miss more words on review but I kept him up with his brother as he is a strong reader and he didn't have a large number of errors.

We are now half way through level 3 and DS10 is blooming. He makes very few errors and could be moving faster. DS8 understands the lessons and does well when I teach but makes many mistakes when we go back and do reviews.

I know I need to do something different. DS8 could go slower and just spend more time with reviews or maybe he needs a different program. He seems frustrated much of the time with spelling. I am looking for advice! I just don't know what to do!!

  10. Thank you!

As far as being picked, I don't know. The line from NASA is that it is random. However, it appears that you are more likely to be selected if you are an active tweeter on science, space and NASA.

There were almost 3000 applicants. I am sure there will be tweetups for the next launch (and STS-135 if approved). So, if you are interested, get on twitter and start chatting about space. I have learned so much from doing just that. I have also gotten a lot of new friends.

  11. I would like to share an amazing gift that I have been given. I have been chosen by NASA to attend a 2 day event around the upcoming launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery. I will be tweeting and blogging before and through the event. There will be many opportunities to learn things about space and science. I will be part of a group of 150 people chosen to interact with NASA scientists, shuttle technicians, engineers, administrators, and astronauts. The finale of the program is the final launch of Discovery with viewing from the press area.

There are several teachers in our group but I am the only homeschool parent. I would love to have lots homeschool families, parents, or kids follow along with me. I am passionate about space but I also know that it's a great way to get kids excited about science and all things STEM related.

I'm thinking about also having a Q & A session before, after, or maybe both if there is interest.
