I thought it was strange that the doctor's son died the day before his second birthday. I thought SIDS was only for young infants, not kids old enough to walk.

A childhood friend of mine lost her son around that age while napping at daycare. Unimaginable. They called it sudden unexplained death in childhood. A year or so later someone in my church lost their 4-year-old in her sleep. My son was the same age at the time and it really shook me. Those are the only times I've heard about it, but I confess I'm afraid to look into how common it is. 😢

  2. Well, crud. I knew I shouldn't have opened this thread! I didn't need another daily addiction! 😜

I agree it's cool that it gives you clues and then you can see it on a map. Love it! (Oh, and I didn't get it right today, but I correctly guessed the continent, then wracked my brain for countries singing Geography Songs, which we haven't listened to in ages, so I am rusty to say the least!)

I am almost through episode 2.   I had hoped this was a documentary on the Hillsong church as a whole, but it is really just about the NY Hillsong church pastor.

And yes, I agree that there is far more accountability in mainline denominations.   Honestly, when my son started looking at Hillsong school I didn't even know they had actual churches called Hillsong, I thought it was just a school and music name.

And I was quite familiar with Bethel as I had already delved into that after those documentaries came out (Finger of God was the first one.).

I saw a documentary on Youtube that features Bethel, Hillsong, and Elevation.  Elevation is local to me so it caught my attention.

    OY!

Could you please post a link to the documentary you mentioned in your last paragraph? TIA

  4. Some good responses already, just adding that our Pack covers registration fees and pays for camp for leaders, but I realize that not all Packs have as many funds to work with. It's difficult to tell if the cost is the biggest issue or the time commitment. I like what others have said about both. You should definitely speak to the leadership about your concerns, and if the Pack doesn't do any fundraising, that would be a good place to start. (I would strongly suggest that the Pack come up with their own rather than a Council fundraiser, where the Council keeps a big chunk - at least until they have enough money to cover the costs of the leaders.)

You sound like a fantastic leader, but if it's all too much (which I can completely understand!), then step down, even if it's just for a time so you can give the Pack time to figure out how to support the leaders better. You shouldn't have to pay for supplies out of pocket. Try to finish out the school year if you can.

  5. I have considered posting this question too, and I'm not quite 50, but I'm SO ready to be done, and it seems like most of my friends are, or are at least close to done. Not me! As regular as I have been for almost 40 years 😭

And I also don't have a family history due to my mom's surgery. So having others chime in is oddly helpful. At least I don't feel alone. Then again, it tells me that I could have a ways to go, which isn't the best news. 😕

  6. After calling three places, I got an appointment for tomorrow morning. The first place I called, I had left a message and didn't get a call back until I had already secured an appointment, but I thought it was interesting that it was the dentist herself calling me back! She said she is short staffed this week and handling things alone today. The second place I called is closed until January 3rd also. At this point, I'm grateful I got an appointment for tomorrow, even though we have to drive farther away to get to it.

As a side note, I logged in on my computer so I could type up the original post (I usually just lurk on my phone), and realized that my signature hadn't been updated in over 5 years! Oops! I thought I had updated it awhile back, but it turns out that I only updated my profile, not my sig. I never see sigs on the mobile version so I hadn't even noticed. 😂

Go elsewhere. I had saved my ds's chipped piece but they weren't able to use it because it was so small and part was lost. Sooner is better before your child wears more of the tooth in his mouth. Did you plan on him eating? I can't believe your dentist said it could wait.

I can't believe it either. The more I think about it, the more upset  get. He tried to eat a very soft muffin last night and it was sore. I've already called one new dentist's office this morning and left a message. If I don't hear back soon, I'll be calling another. We live in a very rural area, so there are a ton of options to pick from, nor do people typically leave reviews on Yelp, but just for kicks, I tried Yelp as a previous poster suggested, and found two awful reviews about the current dentist. Not surprised. I'll be switching everyone ASAP.

  8. Thanks so much for the replies. It's one of his bottom teeth in the very front, and it broke off at an angel, so it's lower on one side than the other. It's been long enough that the Advil has worn off, and it's tender when he tries to bite, even though he was biting into a soft muffin. So yes, I will be making some calls tomorrow. And it looks like I'll be switching the kids completely now, since I agree it's ridiculous for them both to be away at the same time. Not to mention the fact that their voicemail greeting said nothing about them being on vacation, although I guess that's because the hygienists are still working this coming week, doing cleanings, etc. My previous experience with this dentist was that he recommended a root canal, which it turns out I didn't need. It's a longer story than that, but that's the short version.

    Thanks again!

  9. In what appears to have been an accident (but you never know with those two!), one of my dc hit the other with a shovel while clearing snow and the victim chipped a tooth. Of course it's an adult tooth. I did some searching online, and it appears that if it's more than half chipped, it should be treated fairly soon. So I called my dentist's office and called the emergency number for his dentist. I left a message and got a call back over an hour later. Apparently the dentist is out of state on vacation and won't be back to work until January 3rd and neither will the other dentist in the practice. He said as long as he isn't in much pain, it can probably wait until then. I did tell him that we have the chipped off portion of tooth, and he seemed to think he may be able to bond it back on, but didn't give clear instructions on what to do with the chipped part in the meantime. I mentioned we had put it in milk (which I think is supposed to be done to a full tooth - oops), but once again, he didn't give me different instructions. I should mention that I stopped seeing this dentist over a year ago for a very specific reason, but kept the rest of the family there because they like the hygienists.

Anyway, I'm wondering if I should take him elsewhere to get it looked at. My concern is that it could become infected in the meantime, and require a root canal. I think I would have felt a bit better if the dentist at least asked me to text him a picture so he could see the extent of the chip. Am I overreacting? Any experience in this area? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

  10. I'm pretty good with Excel, but I'm not sure if that's the right way to go about it. I'm also not completely sure I understand what you are trying to do because the picture you posted is a little hard (for me) to read with the highlighting. But IF I understand correctly, you might want to consider using filters instead. Then you can choose to filter the data by one child or another or both. Does that make sense?

  11. This topic made me laugh because I was just remembering an INFAMOUS birthday party at which my youngest had just blown out the birthday candles when she puked. And - I'm not exaggerating - within 24 hours, everyone in that room (10 of us!) were suffering from the worst tummy bug ever. At least two of my kids were puking on the car ride home, which was 1.5 hours, by the way)! My parents are still so scarred from it that they insist they need an apartment with two bathrooms when they (hopefully) move. Looking back, it was actually a fascinating case of contagious illness, but it was brutal at the time, especially in my house where there were 6 of us "purging" at once - some from both ends. (Shudder)

  12. You've gotten some great feedback already, but I have a couple of things to mention. Since you asked, we went in July a few years ago as part of a cross country trip and camped there for 2 nights. We were fairly hardcore and got up and in the car between 5-6 AM to avoid the crowds. It was not easy or pleasant to crawl out of the tents that early, but it was so worth it to get a few stops mostly to ourselves before the crowds showed up. We explored from 6-11ish, went back to the campsite for lunch and naps/down time, then back out again for mid afternoon until dinner. It worked well for us.

Someone above mentioned the mess that other travelers left behind. This was especially true with some of the bathrooms! Most disgusting bathrooms I've ever seen. My kids learned that in some cultures, people stand on top of the toilet seat (even though signs showed in pictures how the toilet was to be used) and there were poop and used toilet paper on the ground, etc. I would rather have had my kids go in a gallon zip lock behind a bush! I'm sure it's not always like that, but I was shocked and wished I had known.

On the upside, it's truly a unique and amazing park. We stopped at several parks on our trip and that was one of my favorites, mainly because of the variety of things to see. We had downloaded an app that used GPS to narrate sites as we drove. The whole family enjoyed that and it helped us find things we would have missed without it. I'm not sure which one we used (sorry!), but I know we paid for it and it was worth it.

Oh, and we entered from the northeast and the drive was spectacular. Stunning views, if a bit stressful to drive!
