  1. Has anyone gotten pushback on reasonable boundaries? I have a few friends who have struggled with this. Not necessarily coming and going related, but basic picking up after yourself, etc. Things that were established in the household all their lives are suddenly an onerous imposition, lol.

So good to see you!!!  You've had quite a time of it!  Hope you're steering for calmer waters ahead.

I have a senior this year too.  He's pretty chill about the whole thing, but their theatre group is hoping to finish rehearsing and perform this summer and there will be a seniors only banquet and car parade in July too.  Crazy times.

You too! Congrats to your guy. Our group is hoping to have a grad, although the plans be a changin’ left and right. DS was chosen to speak, which was pretty special. The local high school got all of their senior spring athletes (both of my guys are varsity tennis there) big picture posters and hung them alongside the football field for a drive by parade, which was very cool. (It was especially cool that the athletic office remembered and included my DS, considering he doesn’t even go to school there, lol.) I still don’t know that we are going to even try to do a party... that might be pushing our luck. I have no interest in getting sick again this year. Six weeks in Jan/Feb was more than enough for this chick.) But, at least he is getting some fun, memorable stuff:)

Hey Beautiful!!  So glad you are here!  (((Heather))) Praying you can get in a few boring weeks.

Have I told you lately how I love you? (Picture me singing this:)

Boring is highly underrated sometimes. I find myself very much appreciating it right now!

and ditto, @Krissi I miss you all too!

  4. @wilrunner, that is so helpful. You have a very similar approach to how we handle things in general. Luckily, we have a really good base, and they are really good kids. We, too, has a DS/DH conflict over the weekend, and that is what prompted this post. We are fine with (most;) of their decisions, etc. They make good choices often. But, I know going forward that we need to set the expectations from the front end.

I don’t give advice much unless asked in specific situations. Hopefully, all of our extensive homeschooling discussions have planted enough seeds that I don’t have to. I have told DS that I have no interest in running his life. I am only interested in loving him. He has already said that he knows if I ever stick my nose in something, he will listen because he knows that my nose stays out unless something is imminently awful. That was nice to hear.

I need to make clear that...

    I am not their maid.

If they live here, they are part of a household that needs all parties to contribute in some manner.

They can have crappy days, but they don’t get to take it out on the people who are kindest to them.

As someone said in a different thread, full independence means fully providing for yourself. If you want to reap the rewards of OUR hard work, there are some responsibilities that are inherent in that.

@RootAnn, we are usually one of the more relaxed homeschool families in our area. I tend to have high standards/tighter rules for the kids when they are very young, and then keep opening it up as they get older. We have never had to do curfews or anything like that... we decide what makes sense for whatever activity they are doing.

Keep it coming. It is so helpful to read what people have done and why/how they have done it. Obviously, everybody has their own version of family life. I’d rather have more info to sift through than less, lol. Like most things:)

  5. Hey y’all. Happy June:)

I am finally catching up on life. I know I said that in the winter, and last summer and the year before that, lol. We have now lost 3 parents and a nephew. I was ill for 6 weeks in Jan. Still have a brother to arrange care for, but other than that, our dementia/caregiving journey has (God-willing) come to an end.
If I can just get my senior to finish his senior year, I think I might breathe again.

Cheech and Chong, the cats, say hello to ITT. I plan on spending a few mornings going back through posts to see how everyone is doing...

I have been off the board for years, but as my eldest is now a senior, I thought I'd peek back in. My daughter was also accepted to Hillsdale ED (her first choice). She got enough of a scholarship that we got her under her grandfather's limit of how much he will pay. After some back and forth between Hillsdale (it's 14 hours away) and John Brown in Arkansas, she has decided on Hillsdale. Congratulations to your son!

Congrats to your daughter... Hillsdale should have a group called “Offspring of the Hive”:)

  7. My oldest is turning 18 in a few weeks. He will be home a few months before heading off to college. He will likely be back for vacations and summers.

To all of the moms who have semi-launched or launched kids, what are your thoughts? What house rules make sense with newly-minted 18yos and/or college kids bouncing between home and college? What did you do that helped your relationship as they transitioned to adults? What would you choose not to do if you had a do over? Any thoughts on sibling relationships between the launched and those still at home? What have you found to be reasonable with that elusive line of giving support (financial, etc), expecting respect, expectations as a member of a household, etc.

We treat our kids with respect as a matter of course... yet, I know we are - and will be - dealing with some of that illogical pushback/arrogance that comes with the age... tips on handling that well would be excellent - real life language and examples are even better:)

  8. Congratulations to everyone!

I still can’t believe we are at this point. I remember being on this forum when my kids were itty bitty.

My Senior was accepted ED at Hillsdale College. It is his first choice, and he got a great merit award. It is a terrific fit for him.

It’s funny how things work out. My plan was always so much college searching, lots of options. It turns out I had a more single-minded kid than I expected:D

eta: ignore my sig, life has had me off the forum for far too long:)

On the way to cello lesson a wasp started flying around the windshield.  INSIDE the van.  I stopped for gas and managed to wound it with a tissue box against the glass and then beat it with a waterbottle on the dashboard.  When we got back to the van after the lesson, the wasp was gone.  Svengo.

Susan, too funny, I can just picture you beating the snot out of the wasp. Why? Because that could have been me anytime a stinging creature decides to invade my space. #phobiassuck

I am having a “not a great mom”, not “taking advantage of a teachable moment” moment. DD2 wanted to add more to her little essay on helium, so she copied directly out of the encyclopedia. Well, it’s almost 4:00 and I am tired and if I were a good Mom I would sit down with her and the encyclopedia and work with her to come up with stuff that she understands and is truly in her own words. I just nicely told her she couldn’t copy. She erased and left. I feel bad, but I am tired and working with her is such a struggle. She has learning problems that are just.... tremendous. She tries hard and I should have helped her, but I know that working with her on this will be a huge undertaking. Maybe we can revisit this some time when I am fresh.

Oh, how many of those moments I have had in recent years... you are a terrific mom. I agree with Slache... a not great mom would have told her to copy from the encyclopedia😈

Praying for Jean’s DD... I had a horrible (said with weird French accent) experience with wisdom tooth extraction. So much pain. I feel for her.

Slache, your DH must really love you to give up the grass, lol. By the way, we got two cats (littermates). Guess what the family - after literally hours and hours of deliberation - decided to name them... Cheech and Chong😬 Cheech is a girl, beautiful and long haired... she mostly goes by CheeChee. Chong is sleek and corny. They are both super cuddly and funny. I think God knew our family needed a combo of snuggles and laugh out loud crazy. So he gave us the kittehs.

Jojo! Junie! Prairie! WhiteHawk! Critter! Angi! ...🥰🥰🥰

  10. Thanks, Lynn. ((Hugs back)). It is nice to be back, instead of just doing a drive by;)

It has been a road... hopefully, now life will let us finish strong with school. I can’t believe I have a junior and a freshman right now... so much time and energy has gone into other things. Now, we are circling the wagons, lol.

  11. Thanks, Krissi!!

I have just read two pages and have no idea how I have stayed away for so long. I have MISSED you guys. Which may be weird. Because, ya know, the Internet. But I have😘

Slache with a new chin hair, Jean’s bunnies, your coffee, Susan and the cello. It looks like Renai graduated a kid. Lynne is still in the car:) and that is all in just two pages.

    Brief synopsis...

Around March of last year, we moved my in-laws to a memory care facility in our town. As you know, we had two years of Alzheimer’s/vascular dementia hell before coming to that very difficult decision.

FIL passed away in June... funeral in July... the night of said funeral, my mother had an ICH stroke out of the blue. (I had a houseful of out of town guests for brunch when I got the call and had just told DS16 that we were finally going to settle into us as a family again.)

Then, it was weeks of visiting her in a hospital an hour away. She couldn’t talk, or even communicate reliably or move much...many hours talking to her, holding her hand. Then, when they wanted to put in a feeding tube, I had to make the hardest decision of my life... to let her go.

Then, it was hospice for 7 days, funeral, Estate and possessions, and the very long process of getting a sibling with MS on Medicaid and still trying to get them a move to a care home.

All of this while still, you know, feeding the family, homeschooling, cleaning toilets, dealing with teen trials and hugging away teen hurts. Not one ounce of energy left for the Internet, except for occasional scrolls through Pinterest to numb myself, lol.

Yesterday, DH and I celebrated 20 years of marriage... by watching Netflix and eating Sushi and ice cream bars in the living room while the kids were at a tennis match. And you know what, that was just right:) We were talking and are both amazed that we are still recovering from it all. But, we are recovering and getting back to the things in life that make us smile is awesome!

Apparently, ITT is one of those things🤗

  12. Okay, so having some real coffee now. And dh just told me the UK football game starts at noon. :w00t:  So, I think I should go on back down there early to figure out how I'm going to pick them up. (ds and friend). I don't know whether to try to get close to the classroom building and park illegally (but stay in my car) or go to the visitor parking garage a couple blocks away and walk over to meet them and make them walk back to the car with me. DECISIONS! With imperfect information about which roads will be blocked/re-routed! :willy_nilly: (I googled for information, but evidently they don't make that public ahead of time.)

I guess I better head that way.... :(

When you get there, text them and tell them where to meet you. They can figure out how to get from point a to point b:) and you can peacefully have coffee:)

  13. Goood mooorning, ITT!

Kids start new tennis session today... of course Saturday morning is the only time that fits the schedule, so no sleeping in through Jan:( But it is a beautiful day... upper 60s, low humidity and sun. And it is at the club, which is also our gym, so I am going to try to do something exercisey, even if it is just a stretching workout. Or dh and I may go get coffee and walk on the trail up the road.

    Happy Saturday!

  14. The next writing contest I want to enter is setting dates. I shouldn't be nervous. I'm well ahead of schedule for editing, and I've already got most of my entry material prepared. Why do I feel like I'm fixing to be called up to the piano in a recital? :willy_nilly:

No worries. You can rock it!

Wow!  (((Mr. Heather)))  Glad he is on the mend and your school year is underway.

We took oldest to college several weeks ago and saw him when he visited over Labor Day.  Several of us had colds this last week which slowed down the school week, but overall we're doing well and making progress.  Oh, yeah, and dh retired in May so having him home is a TON of help - totally awesome!  He is Taxi-driver, plumber, deck stainer, grocery shopper, basketball coach, dog trainer - you name it!

Another ITT baby off to college. Time flies :crying:

    Edpo warning

It's September, so you know what time it is. Time to start worrying about next year. Just me? Ok. Anyhoo...

Is there much of Beast 5 that would be redundant with a less challenging pre-algebra like Lials or Dolciani? I don't think oldest is going on to AOPS.

    Not just you:)

Ugh!! DH doesn't want to move. But our family dynamics are not great and we need more room. So, there's conflict. But, we're moving forward. Slowly!!

I am praying for resolution. Conflict no es bueno!

Now I just want ice cream. Last spring B&R has this cookie dough ice cream that actually tasted like chocolate chip cookie dough, not vanilla Icecream with bits of cookie dough in it. It was divine.

I just ate ice cream, with rhubarb ginger jam. Yum!

There is gas in the stations! I'm headed out to go fill up our vehicles.  I'm signing off for the weekend (I think); dh just flew back into town.

    yay for gas!

:banghead: BIL's neighborhood is now under mandatory evacuation and they are refusing to leave. He says his whole neighborhood is staying put because their street is at the highest elevation in the city. As though flooding is the only worry when you have 115mph winds beating at you. (Can you say "house falls into sinkhole"?) He "wants to be there to help with the aftermath". As though he has any practical training or rescue skills. Moron. I told dh to text him back and make sure he has a good chain saw.

There are no words. All of those trained emergency folks apparently know nothing :svengo:

    Sorry.

But your use of moron made me hear it the way Reba says it. Moe-Ron!

    Love her!

    I'm scared of Helga.

I can take Helga. Totally. Helga cowers in fear when she sees me coming. I would never let her get you guys:)
