  1. I think we're on the same wave in this regard. We definitely need something "sex positive" for our family. (Just looked up this term. First time I'm using it.) I hadn't even given the nutrition aspect a thought in regard to religion. But, I do know what you're referring to. I remember when the whole Daniel Fast blew through our town.

I can't imagine using a Christian curriculum for health as a secular family. I mean, we're sex positive, we don't think drug use is a moral issue, we don't think nutrition is a moral issue (and if that sounds weird, you don't know about the Christian diet industry)... I just can't imagine any of it being the same perspective as what I'd want.

  2. I have, but there isn't much to choose from on that front either. I always find Apologia appealing, but DD used it once for science and said no more. The religious slant is just too much. Some of the connections they try to make are eye rolling. I understand her point.

We used CLE for various subjects for years. We had no problem with the religion in those. It was clear. Apologia is sneakier.

Maybe try Acellus, so long as you make peace with the fact that you won't be learning much. It's technically secular but considering the owner's background, I wouldn't be 100% confident it doesn't have any traces of Christian influence.

Have you considered using a christian curriculum and supplementing with secular books?

  3. Hah! DD and I discussed this just the other day. I told her I put them so others can see them, but I said she can do hers either way. I don't know what she decided. I'll have to ask when she gets home from camp.

I struggle with this, actually, because I see them more than anyone, so shouldn't I have them toward myself? Seems polite to face them for other people, though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  4. My DD did GH World Geography this year and adored it. It was her favorite class. She learned a ton. It is difficult to wade through, though. There's a lot of pieces.

Your DD could do the online textbook spine (including the embedded videos), the workbook (easy), the Seterra maps, the Geography Now videos, and a sampling of books and have plenty to do.

We used these books (some DD listened to, some she visually read): From Here to Eternity, The Religions Book, Prisoners of Geography, The Trivia Lover's Guide, Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, In the Land of the Jaguar, The Bonjour Effect, North: How to Live Scandinavian, Breaking Stalin's Nose (a little below level...DD listened to it during lunch), I Am Malala, Persepolis, The Little Book of Hindu Deities, Foundations of Chinese Civilization, Cool Japan Guide, Kampung Boy, A Long Walk to Water, Illegal, and War Brothers. We would have read Trevor Noah too, but we saved it for a class she's taking next year.

If you buy it, click the links through the PDF schedule to play the videos, etc. It's a lot easier.

ETA: DD worked on all of this independently. I printed the PDF schedule and highlighted the things I wanted her to do. She clicked the links on the PDF schedule to complete the online components.

I have looked at GH World Geography. It sounds great, but my daughter would not do well with an online text. It also sounds like it's quite time consuming. (1-2 hours per day) Also I'm not good working with a "buffet" of choices. I need the plans to be more specific.

  5. You may not have completed the last turn all the way from the day before, so when you went to stick the tool into the hole, there wasn't a hole where it was supposed to be, and the tool slipped. If you are having a hard time finding the hole, look for it where the end of the turn would be and complete it.

When DD got hers, the ortho didn't turn it all the way when he was showing me how to do it. Needless to say, I was in tears the next day when I couldn't find the hole and didn't understand why such an "easy" thing was so difficult. I could have easily stabbed DD but didn't, thank goodness. I totally sympathize with you, though. It can be a little scary.

  6. I don't recommend the basic Tampax with cardboard applicator. They feel like you're ripping your guts out. The are not like OB at all. They are like long cotton batting sewed down the middle with the string. I loved OB with applicator. Used them for a long time. Haven't been able to find them in store for years. I use Tampax pearl now. I cringe at the waste, but I don't know what else to do. I like Tampax Radiance too, but the plastic is so thick on those applicators, I can't justify it.

  7. We love 30A. You might drive down it and stop at the little villages/towns along the way. We stayed at Okaloosa a couple of years ago when we needed a hotel we could cancel at the last minute, if need be. We usually rent VRBOs along 30A. There isn't a lot to do in that area besides enjoying listening to the waves. We did do some geocaching as we walked along the beach.

You might try Bruster's for ice cream. And, there's a Pizza by the Sea in Destin, I think now. We like the twisty breadsticks.

I'll have to think on other things.

  8. I had this happen with an overdose, I guess, of melatonin not too long ago. It was the craziest thing. I could physically feel people touching me in my dream. I don't think I've had that happen before. It was also one of those dreams where I knew things weren't real but couldn't break out of the dream, so then I thought maybe they were. Lol. It was cool and scary at the same time.

  9. Will totally check it out! We love the obscure. Lol.

There is (or was, it’s been since pre Covid) a tiny, funky scuba museum in some unassuming hole in the wall spot down on the water. It’s not normally the kind of thing we pay to pop into but it was utterly fascinating and I’d highly recommend it if you have a few minutes, especially if you’re already feeling inspired after whale watching. 🙂

  10. Oh, good! We are going whale watching with Cape Ann Whale Watch.

After the Boston Marathon bombing part of one of the lines was replaced with a bus while they did construction; it seems to me there wasn’t really any disruption when we took it, it was just like a subway to bus transfer. IIRC they ran the buses constantly.

You might want to double check how long it’s going to take though, in case the bus is slower. Cape Ann is beautiful, I especially like Gloucester.

  11. DD and I are taking a mother-daughter trip to Boston May 7-16. We were planning to visit both Salem and Gloucester by commuter rail during that time. Today, on the MBTA site, it states the following:

    Service Change UPCOMING
Mon 5/9 through Sun 5/22, buses replace all Rockport Line service. Newburyport service replaced up to Beverly. They will connect to the Blue Line at Orient Heights for service to/from Boston. Normal train service will operate between Beverly & Newburyport.

What does this mean exactly? If we board the train at North Station, will they automatically transport us by bus the rest of the way to Salem/Gloucester after we reach the cutoff point? Or, will we have to buy a separate ticket for a bus (and use a separate timetable) when we get to the cutoff point? I had planned to use the $10 weekend commuter rail pass for at least one of these trips.

Let me add that we live in the rural Midwest. This will be our first time using mass transit of any sort as our primary means of transportation.

  12. I'm struggling a bit. This is what I'm thinking right now.

LA:  GPS Core 1 - Africa & Asia
History:  GPS Core 1 -  Africa & Asia
    Math:  MUS Geometry
    Science:  Clover Valley Chemistry
    Latin:  MP Fourth Form Latin

Still deciding on what else. I have Oak Meadow A&P, but I kind of wish I wouldn't have bought it. Been thinking about health or government, but I'm underwhelmed by the options. It might be better to wait for government when DD studies American History again anyway. What we really want to do is get an online business up and running, but I'm having a hard time finding the correct pieces to turn it into a class.
