International students: We're launching a program within the next few weeks just for international students! This program will accommodate the time difference for lectures by allowing students to watch a recorded class within 24 hours of the live lecture. Assignments are still due within 24 hours of the rest of the class. This is not to be confused with asynchronous classes (which record classes and do not have firm assignment due dates). We won't offer asynchronous classes this academic year.

Can afterschoolers take this program as well if there are no sections that accommodate after school hours, especially in different time zones?

  2. I was hoping the same thing for my oldest.  I am considering signing him up for the remedial course because that has evening hours, but I am not quite sure that is where he would need to be.

I am also thinking of signing up my ds for the intro to expo course because it's in the evening, but I'm not sure if he should be in that one or Expo 1 (but Expo 1 wouldn't fit our schedule). But he'll most likely be going to school next year, but I would still like to supplement his writing.

For my older ds, I was hoping to be able to put him in Intro to rhetoric, but have the same problem.

  3. I am considering getting a literature guide for my 7 year old son who still struggles with reading and writing.

I have looked at several online and would like to know what others think of them. They are Veritas Press First Favourites, Memoria Press Storytime Treasures and More Storytime Treasures, and Lightning Literature's grade 1 pack. I would also be using Writing with Ease 1 with my son, so I'm wondering if I actually should get the literature guides or just use WWE.

    Thanks!

  4. How are we supposed to read Google books? I can't figure it out. I don't see a download button anywhere.

My dd is in 5th and is a strong writer. We started out the year with WWS but ditched it after a few months. It made my daughter hate writing and complain about having to do it, which we'd never experienced before.

I switched her to a vintage writing text from Google Books, School Composition, and she loves writing again. The assignments are more flexible and the instruction isn't as incremental. It's a lot easier to modify the assignments based on my goals and objectives, and dd isn't stuck writing about something she dislikes. (I know kids have to learn that skill, but I'd rather teach the mechanics in an enjoyable way than locking horns with her over content while still learning mechanics.) Frankly, she disliked most of the passages in WWS and finds the passages in School Composition much more interesting.

The same author, William Henry Wheeler, has Writing in English for the higher grades. Our spelling book (also vintage) was written by William Henry Maxwell, so my daughter likes to say she does school with the William Henrys.

We also use the writing lessons in Hake Grammar and writing, although dd doesn't like them. She says they don't teach her anything new, to which I reply that sometimes it's good to just practice skills you've already learned.

  5. I am trying to decide which spelling program to get for my 5th grade ds. He is a natural speller and would like a program where he can work independently.

Would Rod and Staff spelling or Spelling Workout be better, and should I go with grade level, or use one grade up?

    Thanks.
