  1. Thanks, everyone, for your comments. Dh and I were talking to ds13 when he got home from school. We could tell that he was very worried about getting fired and he didn't realize how serious his actions were. The route supervisor called again in the afternoon to talk ds13. She asked him if there was a problem with the route and whether he still wanted to deliver newspapers. He admitted to dumping the bundle, and said that he still wanted to deliver newspapers. I was very surprised that she gave him one more chance because she had said on the phone the first time that it was not looking good for him. She also told ds that he was lucky that the resident who found the bundle did not call the city hall or else we would get a $2000 fine for illegal dumping.

We told her that he is willing to either take a pay deduction or pay back what he owes the newspaper for the dumped papers and for the newspaper hiring someone else to deliver the missed houses. Ds apologized on the phone to his supervisor and said that this will never happen again. We are also going to have him write a letter of apology to the newspaper. The newspaper that dss deliver are no charge to the residents (it's a neighbourhood paper so costs are covered by advertisers) so I'm not sure what to do about the customers who didn't get their paper.

The supervisor said that it's not necessary for ds to pay back anything or get his pay deducted, so I am thinking that for his next paycheque (or a portion of it - they make about $11-12 for each delivery day, but giving away $11-12 does not seem significant to me), he and his brother can decide on a charity to donate that money to. They will also both get some physical chores at home and around the yard. I will be re-reading the posts and discussing with dh whether we will ground them as well. We had a talk with the two of them about what happened.

I feel that this has been a good learning experience for dss, especially ds13. He realizes how serious his actions were and how important his commitment to a job is no matter how "simple" it may seem, especially since he is responsible to a third party not connected to family, and he realizes that he really does want this job even though he has complained about it in the past.

We don't give them any money since they got this paper route. They have adequate rain gear. That day, it was not raining very hard. If it was, dh or I would have helped out. I agree with pps that this job is not too difficult for a 13 and 11 year old. When I was around that age, I delivered newspapers 6 days a week (about 30 houses) in all kinds of weather and with no help at all from my parents, and I also had to collect money from the customers on a weekly basis.

Thanks, again, everyone. I really appreciate your points of view, especially when I was upset and angry at the beginning. Good thing ds13 was at school so that gave me time to calm down.

  2. My 2 older boys share a paper route, but it's officially in ds13's name. They to about 120 houses 2 times a week (Wednesdays and Fridays). They always want dh to help them by driving them around, especially when the weather is bad. Dh will do it if it's pouring rain. On Friday, it was raining, but dh was too busy to help them. I got a call from the newspaper office telling me that a person found a bundle of newspapers hidden behind a shrub, and another person found 12 papers on the sidewalk. There have also been phone calls complaining of non-delivery.

I was told that it's not looking good for my son, and that most likely he will lose the paper route because he's dumping papers. As far as I know, this is the first time it's happened. I questioned ds11 about this, and he finally confessed that ds13 did hide a bundle because it was raining, and he didn't want to deliver the rest. Ds11 said he told ds13 not to do it, but ds13 didn't listen. Ds13 told ds11 not to say anything about it when they got home.

So they are going to lose the paper route, but what other consequence should they have for doing what they did? I am upset and angry at them, but I think that ds13 (who's at school right now) might not really care about losing the paper route. They usually complain about having to deliver newspapers, but they are definitely going to miss not having a regular paycheque. Their only source of money will be on birthdays and Christmas.

  3. Have you had any hot flushes or night sweats? I just turned 40 last month, and I am going through early/premature menopause. I skipped my period for almost 5 months from July-Dec, then the next 2 have been normal. I got a blood test in the fall, and the doctor confirmed that I have started menopause already. I had been having hot flushes several times a day in the fall, but they are gone now.

My cycles had also been more irregular than usual, and I used to be very regular.

  4. My niece and her family (4 kids) live in Lima. Her husband teaches at an international school there. They love it there. If you have any specific questions I could ask her.

How long have your niece and her family been in Lima? We would be living in Lima as well (San Isidro district) if we moved there. What school does her dh teach at? Did their dc pick up Spanish quickly? Do they go to school or homeschool? I've got more questions, so I should probably pm you later on.

    Thanks!!

  5. My DH is from Comas, Peru! how funny is that! He has all his immideiate family there, and i went there 7 years ago to meet them! I cant wait to bring the kids. i would LOVE to go live there, but would miss my own fmaily way to much. i see my parents weekly so i just couldnt handle that....where is your DH from?

My dh always said is we were attacked as a country he would send us off to la sierra and no one would get to us :)

My dh is from Lima. His parents are from Cusco and Arequipa. My dh also says that if Canada is ever in a war, we would all move to Peru!

Do you speak Spanish (actually Castellano)? I took one year of Spanish in university but don't know it well enough to be able to function by myself right now in a Spanish-speaking environment. We mainly speak English at home with some Spanish phrases here and there.

  6. Dh is from Peru, and is thinking of moving back there in a few years (earliest in 2 years). At first, I didn't want to (I was born and raised in Canada), but the more we talk about it, the more exciting it sounds. It would be a great chance for our dc to learn a second language fluently.

Our oldest ds would probably only be there with us for one or two years before he came back to Canada for university (the plan so far).

Have any WTMers lived in Peru before? We would most likely put the dc in school if we went there. We have visited there twice as a family for vacation, but I'm sure living there would be different. Dh has no immediate family there, just extended family.

    Thanks.

  7. I use a credit card, but if you don't like the bill coming every month, then you can just pay off each transaction after you use your credit card. Your bill would still come, but there wouldn't be a balance on it, or if there was, it probably just wouldn't have gone through yet. You can easily check online to see when purchases and payment go through.

I wouldn't use a debit card online because of the possible fraud and theft problems.

  8. I feel bad for you, Colleen. Do your dc and dh notice or comment when you are being left out like this by your inlaws? I think that if your inlaws continue doing that, then sooner or later, your dc are going to not want a relationship with their grandparents anymore because they are hurting their mom.

    (((Colleen)))

Mine is more a big, heavy sigh than a scream. I am so apathetic about Christmas this year. I'm tired of being the parent who organizes, only to be told I'm controlling and/or encounter adolescent angst. I'm tired of an emotionally empty marriage which feels all the more empty when Christmas and my spouse's birthday are both looming. And today, receiving a Christmas package from my in-laws with gifts for every family member except me is just another sigh atop sighs. Not because I care about gifts in the "give me stuff" sense, but because being ignored is painful.

Now to find the right smilie...

  9. This is a great thread! I just found out recently that I have premature menopause (I'm 39). I don't exercise at all, but I want to start exercising (mainly running) to prevent osteoporosis and heart disease, so this thread is really helpful.

I just hope that I can get started and won't quit. It'll be good to come here and read about everyone's progress. Hopefully that will get me motivated too.
