  1. Did the dd going to school in Spain have to go through the local ps in order to do that? I could see my oldest dd be interested in doing something like that when she is old enough.

Not at all, as a matter of fact, it would have been easier if she was still homeschooled as far as getting the classes when she needed them to graduate on time. She's going through the Rotary Club - they have an awesome program http://www.rotary.org/en/studentsandyouth/youthprograms/rotaryyouthexchange/Pages/ridefault.aspx

  2. My youngest will be going to public high school next year while my oldest will be spending her senior year of high school in Spain. I guess my homeschooling career will be done at the end of this year. Sigh. It has caused a major mid-life crisis for me. Prior to homeschooling, I was a computer programmer/analyst and while I think I would be perfectly happy doing that again, I know it will require some classes to catch up on the latest and greatest. I have also considered totally switching gears and getting into the healthcare field as it really interests me. I think I would love to be a pharmacist, but I don't want to do that much school. Same with physician assistant. So, I've requested information from a local college about their MBA program and their MS in computer - hoping refreshing my skills with a masters degree might open up some doors for me. Not sure which degree would be better in helping me find a good job locally. Once I decide, I will have to take the GMAT or GRE and maybe I could start with a class or two next fall. I'm kind of excited at the thought of making money again, just in time to pay for college....

  3. Thanks for the ideas. I did get reservation for Biergarten - I only had a choice between 4:25 and 8:25 though. We will be sure to get the birthday button too. I looked into the cakes, but since we'll have a rental car, we might save some money and go get one at the store to have in our rooms. I'm going to share the suggestions with my db to see what else he might want to do for our dad. Thanks!

  4. Next week I'm going to Disneyworld with my db and his family along with my parents. My dad is definitely not a Disney fan and it actually shocks me that he's agreed to go. He will be turning 70 while we are there and we would like to do something for him but I have no idea what. He's of German heritage and loves German food/beverage, so we were thinking of going to the Biergarten in Epcot to eat (if I can even get reservations on such short notice), but I would like to do more for him. Any ideas for a non-Disney person? If it makes any difference, we will all be adults except for a 2yo.

    Thanks.

  5. We are thinking about the LG Optimus V which has Android.

I just bought one of these today for dd for her birthday - they have them on sale at Target for $99! She's had Virgin Mobile for over a year and it's been great. You can't beat the price and she's had no problem with service except when camping in the boonies. I'm waiting for my ATT contract to be up and then I'm probably switching too but I'll splurge and get the fanciest phone they have. ;)

  6. Well, I wasn't skipped when I was in 2nd grade despite learning nothing and that wasn't a good option. Although I'm quite sure that grade skipping wouldn't have solved all of my problems, it certainly would have helped.

My dd technically wasn't grade skipped as we started homeschooling in 1st grade and when she already knew all of the first grade materials, we went ahead and did 2nd grade. I tried to keep her challenged as we went along. When she got to 9th grade, she wanted to go to high school so she started high school a year younger than everyone else and has had no problems adjusting. As a 15 year old junior, most of her friends are 17 and 18 year old seniors. She has also decided to spend her senior year as an exchange student in Spain so she has been taking all of her junior and senior year classes this year. She will have all the credits to complete high school in 3 years at the age of 16. There is no doubt in my mind that this has been the best route for her. Sure, if she was a year older entering high school, she would probably do better on the SAT and ACT, but she does well enough. I think holding her back would have left her less happy and bored.

  7. So what will the cost difference be? Do you have a family plan with ATT?

I am still not seeing concrete numbers and I find the ATT website difficult to even figure out a plan.

    Dawn

I don't have the family plan because it's never made sense to for us. I don't have the latest numbers but when I went to check a year or two ago, it was no cheaper to have the family plan with 2 iPhones than it was to have 2 separate accounts. That would have made it $150 for 2 iPhones with 450 rollover minutes and unlimited data. I don't believe that included any texts but it might have included them on just one phone. I pay $75/month for just one. I pay $25/month for my dd to have 300 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data on Virgin Mobile. It does appear they've increased it to $35, but that's still a bargain.

  8. I paid $$$$ for 2 years for an iPhone with AT&T. When my contract expired, I looked into cheaper carriers/plans but the major carriers are very similar.

I bought a Motorola Triumph (droid phone) on the Virgin Mobile prepaid network. They retail for $300 but I found a deal for $180. I got on the 300 min/unlimited text & data plan for $25 (it was showing on the website for $35, but a couple of months ago you could still look at more plans on the website & find the same thing for $25 - I don't know if you still can). I am saving $45/mo versus AT&T and I get more texting & data! (phone minutes were never a problem - I rarely *talk* on my phone!). So my new phone will be paid for in savings in the next 6 weeks.

I found it hard to switch from iPhone to droid. But since you've never had one - you won't have to worry about switching! And you will be $1000 or so richer at the end of a 2-year contract. I'd really consider a smart phone on a prepaid network if money is at all a consideration.

:iagree: I currently have and iPhone on ATT and will be switching to Virgin Mobile when my contract is up. My dd has had VM for the past year as it was cheaper than adding a line to my plan and it's been great.

  9. OP - I'd look at what you want/need. Do you really need a smart phone with internet access? If not, I'd keep up with the tracphones. You can text on those - but they charge per text. If your dh really needs texting, look into Virgin Mobile. They use Sprint's network. If you only need one phone, it includes unlimited texting, calling and internet for $25/month. But you'll pay full-price for the phone. That's what it is in my area anyway.

Definitely check into Virgin Mobile. We are so happy with them that when my contract is up with ATT for my iphone (at $75/month for 450 rollover, unlimited data, no text), I will be switching to them now that they have more smartphone options. My dd has had VM for over a year now at $25/month which includes 300 minutes, unlimited data and text. The phones really aren't crazy priced and I have seen them on sale at Target. I think the smartphones range from $100-300. But, when you factor in the difference you pay per month, even the most expensive one will pay for itself in 6 months.

  10. Several years ago, there were 4 school districts in Maryland that used Singapore math. They found that the students in those schools did better on the standardized tests than students at the schools who didn't use it. Unfortunately, they decided to discontinue using it because it didn't line up with their standards. If you google singapore math maryland schools, you should be able to find some articles about it.

  11. As an adult who just had surgery 2 weeks ago at our local hospital, I would say to give him more time. Surgery is traumatic no matter how simple or routine it might be. Anesthesia takes time to fully get out of your body, same with pain meds. I was in a lot of pain before my surgery as well and that is definitely adding to my recovery - I am afraid of having that pain again. If he hasn't been eating well, that will wear him down too. I would try to get him to go for walks outside though as that can help with the healing and the sunshine is good for you.

    :grouphug:

  12. Drink plenty of water and resist salty snacks. That will help keep you from packing on water weight.

Other than that, it's best to just embrace it. It means that you get an extra good week the next week. :D I am always happy when I can maintain my loss and not gain for "that horrid week," because then I know I actually lost weight.

    :iagree:

I also always feel the need to tell them that it's that week. I'm sure they love getting that information, but it makes me feel better.

  13. I just had my gallbladder removed the week before that and I'm only starting to feel more normal. I agree with everyone else on the water, rest and walking. Smoothies also help as I don't feel like eating, so the nutrition in a good smoothie is the only thing that keeps me going some days. I felt very foggy for a week and still don't feel totally with it mentally, but it seems each day is getting better. I know they really downplay gallbladder surgery as it's a relatively minor outpatient surgery any more, but remember, they put you out, removed an organ, messed with the digestive system, and send you on your way without much aftercare. She needs to just take her time and let the healing happen. Also, depending on how sick she was before having the surgery, she might have some extra healing to do - I was in the hospital twice with pancreatitis in the past month before I had mine removed so I have to remind myself that one isn't sick for a whole month, has surgery, and is suddenly better. Hope she is feeling better soon!

  14. I've gotten them from Bath and Body Works in the past along with little oil burners that use a little tea light candle in the bottom. It's been awhile since I've bought some because they last a long time so I don't know if they still carry them. When you burn them, they really give off a lot of scent, so it doesn't take long to fill the house. We also have some little metal rings that fit on top of a light bulb that hold scented oils. When you turn on the lamp, it warms it up and releases the scent.

  15. I have a S&W 38 special airweight snubnose as my conceal carry weapon. I don't like it for just target shooting much because being airweight and snubnose, it has more of a kick than a heavier gun with a longer barrel. For target shooting, I'll usually just use a S&W 22lr revolver as the ammo is cheap and it's fun to shoot. I do have my eye on a Kahr CW9 - I shot one at my conceal carry class and loved it. I found it easy to handle, not as much kick despite it's reasonably small size, and I was very accurate with it.

ETA I have an aftermarket grip on my 38 special - makes it far more comfortable to shoot it.

  16. Well right now, I'm on the pacreatitis diet - after experiencing the pain of it, I'm scared to eat anything! I wouldn't recommend it though. What I find works best for me is Weight Watchers. Their new one makes all fruits and most vegetables 0 points making it so much easier to make healthy choices. I was finding it impossible to lose weight any other way and finally went back to WW and it's working. Having to pay actually keeps me motivated to follow it so I can get back down to goal and not have to pay anymore. I also find the meetings and being accountable to someone very helpful for me. In the past I did have good results with Atkins and was able to keep it off for a year or two, but I really didn't like it even though I was eating quite healthy on it - lean meats and lots of low carb veggies. Since you don't have that much to lose, it could work well for you though.
