  1. I'll be different and vote for the second one. Actually I think it was the second one that we wanted to get but it wasn't available yet when we had to have one. We didn't want one that came up too high from the counter because of it being on a bar vs. against a wall. Since the faucet itself isn't any higher on the gooseneck one, I don't see the point of getting it unless you just really like the looks of it. Also, if you don't like the escutcheon, the metal piece across the bottom, it is optional to use it as you can see in the one picture. I'm sure either one will look good!

  2. No, they probably didn't. But on the old program the calories in fruit were part of my daily points. With free fruits, I can still eat my 29 daily points AND add the calories of fruit on top of that. We are supposed to eat our daily points every day so it's not a matter of choosing an apple over a brownie. On the new program I can have both and count points only for the brownie. If I choose the apple only, I have to make up those points that I'm not getting from the brownie somewhere or I won't be meeting my daily points. It's just a weird illogical concept. So no, people probably don't get overweight eating apples, but adding 2 apples on top of a cheeseburger doesn't negate the calories in that burger.

But WW accounted for the fruit in the points you are allowed. My leader said that it's helpful to think of it as 5 servings of fruits or vegetables are built into the program. If you eat more than 5 servings a day, you might want to count points for the extra servings. Having them be 0 points really helps with making healthier choices - I'd rather have an apple for 0 than a chemical filled bar for 2 points. I think it's helped me eat healthier and feel satisfied. I find that if I don't get enough fruits and veggies, my body tries to hold on to the fat more.

  3. Thanks Musicmom. She took the SAT and the ACT and did better on the ACT so she plans to stick with that. She just took the subject tests because Emory said it was helpful but not required. Well her scores would not be helpful! All the colleges she's looking at will accept either the SAT or ACT so I guess I won't worry about it. Thanks!

  4. We bought http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-755-26GD-Classic-Stainless-Multi-Purpose/dp/B000ND5CAM/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1328918852&sr=8-7 a few years ago and I like it a lot. Matter of fact, I'm using it right now to cook chili. Now that you have me looking...I see they have a multiclad line and at least some of them are on the buy 4 for the price of 3 deal. Hmm, I might have to go buy some now. We have a set of Calphalon professional non-stick that I'm planning on replacing with some stainless steel pots and I've been considering the Cuisinart.

  5. I'm fine today. Within 30 minutes, the pain was completely gone - almost as sudden as the onset. The description of kidney stones and gallstones didn't seem to fit. The pain was all over the abdomen, not at all localized, as most internet sources described. I thought severe food poisoning, but the expected "followup" never came. Plus, no one else in the family had it and we all had the same thing to eat.

I don't seem to have the risk factors for any of those ailments. My recent bloodwork for my thryroid doc, which included many of the tests that they would do to do a diagnosis, didn't turn up any of those common causes either.

Actually, your pain sounds very much like my gallstone/pancreatitis attacks except my first one lasted much longer than that, but the second one was shorter like yours. My entire abdomen, back and chest hurt and nothing I did made it better or worse. My gallbladder problem never showed up in any routine tests either. Risk factors for gallbladder problems include being female and over 40 so I'm guessing you have at least one of those. ;) I probably wouldn't worry about it much as long as it doesn't happen again, but mention it to your dr the next time you go.

  6. I'm curious as to how far apart she took the tests. My dd had planned to take the SAT, mostly because she felt more comfortable on the PSAT than the PLAN. Now she would like to take both, so we're going to try the ACT in June and the SAT in May. I'm not sure she's going to be able to effectively prepare for both between now and then. Thoughts?

My dd took them about a month apart - ACT in Sept and SAT in Oct. She didn't really prepare for either of them despite having the books for them all summer. I think if you just schedule study time for the tests into your school day though, you have plenty of time to prepare. If you spend most of the time on the English and math, it would help on both tests. Here's a link to a post on College Confidential that has good suggestions on preparing http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggis-sat-prep-advice.html and here's a post on our boards about studying for the ACT http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=339690&highlight=sat

  7. My dd took both tests once to see how she would do on them. I thought she would do better on the SAT but she actually did better on the ACT overall. Math is her favorite subject but she does well in everything. She said the math was easier on the SAT and the English was easier on the ACT and her scores reflected that. She has opted to not take the SAT again and just focus on the ACT as she thinks it will be easier to get her math score up on the ACT. She'll be taking it again on Saturday, so we'll see how it goes.

  8. I guess my question is what is your goal for her as far as living in another country? Most exchange programs focus on cultural understanding. If this is your goal, then living by the rules of a family in the host country is part of the learning experience. My dd is going to Spain in the fall for a year and we will be hosting a student from Spain for half that time (Rotary Club has them switch families so they can experience differences in families). I know that teenagers in Spain often go out clubbing and stay out late at night. While I would prefer my dd not do that, I know she will, it's part of their culture. On the other hand, the student who stays with us might not like the fact that she will have to be home by 9pm on school nights and keep us informed of her plans. It's how we do things though, and she will have to adjust. It's first and foremost a cultural exchange and not about just living in a foreign country. If you have different goals for your child, you should probably discuss it with the hosts.

  9. Are you cutting calories too much? If I cut way back on my eating, I stop losing pretty quickly. If I cut back some while still being able to eat a healthy amount of food including plenty of fruits and veggies, I will continue to lose, although not necessarily at the same pace. I mostly walk for exercise and I find that I need to eat a little more when I walk 6 miles/day vs. only walking a couple miles or I also stop losing. Just what works for me.

  10. What do you do when the person won't go, period? Always insists everything is fine or normal for aging or "what can they do anyway?" That's the sort of personality in my family.

Well if I lived closer to my parents, I would have called the dr, told him the situation, made an appt, and made some plans with my mom for that day like lunch or shopping and the dr appt. Sneaky, yes, but I think it would have worked.

The other thing to remember is that someone needs to be sure to speak with the dr either before the appt or at the appt to be sure that he gets all of the information. If my mom had gone in alone, she never would have mentioned her memory issues.

I'm so relieved that my mom has finally gone to the dr, but I hate this sitting here waiting for them to figure out what's wrong. I don't think I can stand to read any more websites about dementia and Alzheimers.

  11. Amy, I hope you can get her to a dr and find out what's going on. We have been having similar issues with my mom. The sooner you get it checked out, the better. My mom used to talk about the same things over and over, often including talking about her cat or the birds at the bird feeder. Now I find that she mostly will just listen to me talk instead. My mom finally went to the dr a couple weeks ago and has had all kinds of blood tests and a ct scan so far. I'm guessing her next stop will be a neurologist. I hate how confused she seems to be about it all.

:grouphug: I hope you get some answers soon.

  12. This is a serious question: when one has concerns about the functioning of an elderly person, but that person thinks all is fine, how do you get that person to a doctor?

My mom has been experiencing major short term memory loss and either wouldn't admit to herself that she had any problem or seriously wasn't aware of it. Anytime that we would mention going to see a dr, she'd just wonder why she needed to see one. I started really getting on my dad about making an appt for her and threatened to nag him everyday until he did it. What actually made her go is that the dr's office called to remind her that it was time for a checkup. So, if you know who her dr is, maybe you could call them and suggest they make a similar call? Otherwise, I think it just takes someone to make the appt and drag her in.
