I was looking for a sample from the text book.
-
Has anyone used the book or plans? There are no samples on the website. I'm shaking up my whole 10th grade plan.
- Descriptive Astronomy, by John Charlesworth (T5402)
- A Student Guide to Writing a Research Paper, by Phyllis Goldenberg, (T1550), optional
- The Edmund Scientific Star and Planet Locator (included with purchase of T5402)
The course is designed to give students an appreciation of the order and complexity of creation, and of the order and complexity in the cosmos. Revelation and science complement each other in illuminating God's glory. The course covers the different kinds of celestial objects, their characteristics, how they formed and developed, and their eventual fates. This includes a discussion of stars (including our sun), star groups, black holes, asteroids and comets, the earth, moon, and planets. It also covers the theories of the origin, development, and future of the universe, as well as whether other planets and life forms exist in space. The student will study, and have the opportunity to observe, the main stars and constellations for both summer and winter.
The workload may vary somewhat week to week. The course plans encourage the student to cover material by topic, which may provide a more thorough understanding of the concept. While some topics may be more simple and covered in less time, others are more complex and may require more of the student's time. A final research paper and oral presentation on an astronomy topic take the majority of the fourth quarter.
Kolbe Core (K) credit is available to those students that follow the course plan and turn in the appropriate sample work. This course is typically done as an elective science course in the 12th grade and includes the following topics: history of astronomy, modern astronomy, electromagnetic waves, the Universe, cosmology and theology, stars and constellations, sky observations, the Solar System: comets, meteors, asteroids, the moon, the earth, and the planets. Lab credit is not available with this course.

When we moved into our last house it came with a feral kitten living in the garage. We did not want a cat but my daughter did and got this cat to accept her. We got her neutered right away and she was a outside cat. She is just my daughter's cat, she shows no signs of even recognizing any of us. When we moved into the condo she came with us and is now after 4 years acting more like a pet cat then a stray. If I were you I would take all of them to a shelter. I do no cat care at all, so my daughter has proven herself responsible. But, every time we go somewhere we have to find a pet sitter and of course we pay the vet bills.

Could you get away with it? Maybe.
Is it allowed? No.

My mother in law and my grandmother waited until everyone was out of the room. On the other hand my aunt hung on just for me to be with her. I was pulling into the driveway and the hospice nurse called me to tell me that my aunt had no pulse and was barely breathing. I rushed into the room, held her hand, and she opened her eyes, smiled at me, and died. She had been in almost a coma state for days. It was just like giving birth- it was a real gift to me that she waited for me.

I've read all 3 editions many times. I still own 1 and 3- but mostly choose the plans in the 3rd edition. Got the first edition in 2001, started homeschooling that Fall.

You know I did look out, but we have too much light pollution in the city to see anything. :(
That is about the only thing I miss about rural life.

I had a box filled with magazines as my first tv stand. The funny thing was that I was proud it was from crate and barrel. You need your empty box to have a nice logo- right?

It went well. I went into it having no expectations of cooperation and I got some, so it ended up feeling like a win. I did drink a 32 oz diet coke at 7pm which turned out to be a mistake. Between that and the after conflict adrenaline rush I tossed and turned til 230 am and have been up since. But, it's over.
I'll nap this afternoon.

You guys are awesome! I'm going in now I'll update later.

I have to deal with some people that are not known for listening or really being reasonable. I dread confrontations.
I'm going to be fine, right? I'm getting it over with tonight so that I don't spend any more time dreading it.

I'm allergic to penicillin and I've always wondered if I should get one

UGH. See if the DA will tell you anything.

I don't test on the ID's so she wrote them out but that was it. Every so often I use section 3 as a essay and used those as test grades.
-
We are using it this year. We are on chapter 68 so almost done. I had my daughter do section 1,2 on her own. We usually talked through comprehension- section 3 together. If there was a map for that chapter then she did that too.
We really liked it. I would never have been able to do it without the guide- it made it open and go for me. Some weeks I would have more time and we would flesh the topic out more and use dvds/documentaries or web pages. Other times I figured just doing the reading and questions was enough.

i think it may be off. The DORA test reads the word and the child just needs to click on the right one. That seems easier than say actually reading off the quick reading list.
-
How accurate is this test? I had my 8yo take half of it today. He got:
HFW-3.83
WR-12.5
PH-4.5
PA-89%
SP-2.83
VO-6.83
We have to do the CO section tomorrow.
I was just surprised at the word recognition score. He has been reading silently for an hour a day all this school year so I guess that worked.
Does the 12.5 mean the same as kids in grade 12.5 or what?

I gave our hospice nurse a coffee gift card and a nice note.

I wouldn't worry about what the public school thinks. I think they would be more likely to be impressed with your honesty. Plus some kids just aren't mathy. You did what you could.

No review, but may I say that, as the wife of a firefighter, my husband would greatly thank you if the program's title comes to pass!
We are actually trying to figure out where to do chemistry just for that reason. We are in a high rise and I really don't want the firemen coming out and shutting down the elevators for a experiment gone awry!

All great ideas. I just realized that this is my first student open to "different" not just slog through the requirements. We have 3 more years of high school to really think out of the box and have fun before she goes away to college.
