My 6th grader is using lively Latin with Hake 7. It is working well so far.

I am a rookie here, but my take is that curricula or instructional material contain new information and then practice. Workbooks are generally practice and reinforcement of material previously taught.
-
I printed everything out, hole punched and put it all in a binder, by page number. We are kind of ignoring the "organize by colored border" thing. Mainly since I printed in b/w, lol! Ds does LL independently, and seems to be really enjoying it so far.

My son turns 12 in October. He is considered a 6th grader, but we are going to do a 6th/7th combo at home.

I'm liking this.... Thanks for the suggestion. I wonder if he could do two books in one year.
That is what we are using too. We just started but I am pleased so far.

My older son loves books like this. Some other favorites that have not been mentioned are The Genius Files series and the Floors series.

Cool, thanks!!

Thanks Rose! I was leaning toward using the 2 Narrative books for 6th grade. I think I will hit the "buy" button now. :)

So, how about with a 6th grader? Narrative 1 or Fable?

I am so confused! I got Sentence Composing for Elementary School for my 6th grader for next year. What comes after that? Paragraphs for elementary or middle school?

I just got MBTP 9-11 science , social studies and selected 5 of the 12 lit units for my younger son. I thought 12 lit units was a little too ambitious. I am adding math, geography (his request) and Writing Tales. I am really impressed with the stuff I got, can't wait to use it!

We are using Discovering the World of Geography. I downloaded the ebooks from Carson Dellosa and then printed them out for both kids.
-
That is my plan for next year!

We are using Discovering the World of Geography workbooks. I have only used the first of the four workbooks so far. It has been excellent.
That's what I have planned for next year. Actually I got the 5-6, 6-7 and 7-8 as e books and printed them for both my kids. I think they look great.

Mine arrived yesterday :)

I think so. I got the paperback.
Thanks! That looks just like what I am looking for!

Hijack: Is the paperback version the same as the hardcover?

My older son really likes Math Detective (as a supplement), Balance Benders and Mindbenders. I like Reading Detective very much, and we plan to use Language Mechanic next year. He is also a workbooky kind of kid.

My 11 yo DS LOVES workbooks. And textbooks. He reads them in the car for fun. And blank notebooks. He is so my kid, LOL! Just go with it!

Here is what I have so far:
11 y.o. DS, this is kind of a 6th/7th mash-up. This will be our first year fully at home, after doing K-5 at a small, private elementary school. He is so excited to begin homeschooling and has really enjoyed selecting his curriculum. He likes a variety, and is pretty motivated when it comes to something he wants to do :)
Math: TT PreAlgebra supplemented with LOF Pre A, and then fun math (Balance Benders, Zaccarro and Understanding Geometry)
History: Finish up HO Ancients with Human Odyssey and begin HO Middle Ages
Geography: Discovering the World of Geography workbooks
Science: McHenry's The Elements, Story of Science and maybe a textbook or 2, which he enjoys reading for fun. If we finish those things, I have Mr. Q Advanced Bio (the Anatomy one), otherwise I will save that for the next year.
Writing: Writing Tales 2 (with DS2)
LA: Caesar's English 1, Grammar Voyage, various EM things (daily paragraph editing, daily language review, daily reading comp, spelling) for morning work.
Foreign Language: Continue with Spanish via Duo Lingo and maybe the Practice Makes Perfect book, I also have Greek Code Cracker
Misc: Meet the Great Composers, Mindbenders, Venn Perplexors, Let's Make Some Great Art
Lit: We will work on reading comprehension with the short passage stuff, and I am working on a book list for him. We will most likely just read and discuss this year and start a formal lit program the next year.
Extracurricular stuff--hopefully some kind of theater program, and he plays tennis a few days a week

- Thanks, that is really helpful!

US and/or World. Has anyone used these? Are they secular? I have some workbook stuff for my geography-loving boys for next year, which I know they will like, but thought this was worth some further investigation.
Thanks!

Understanding Geometry?
We are going to be using this as a supplement next year. I just got it and it looks great!
How is your school so far? We are loving....

We are off to a pretty good start. I have a 5th grader and one doing 6th/7th.
We have really enjoyed the MBTP units we have done, especially Poetry from 9-11 (I would not have predicted that!). I had originally only ordered MBTP for my younger one but the older one asked for some for himself. So i ordered a few units from 11-13 for him. He started a science one (The Hydrospehere) and that is a hit so far.
TT Math (6 for the 5th grader and Pre-A for the 6th grader) is going reasonably well, older DS supplements with LOF and Balance Benders and loves them both.
Both kids are bananas for Mindbenders and Perplexors.
Older DS likes History Odyssey Ancients (he is a box-checker), but just asked if we could not continue reading Golden Goblet because it was "really boring". He is also doing well with Caesar's English, Hake 7 and Lively Latin.
I really like Writing Tales 2 for the 5th grader, W&R 2 is going OK for the older one. Not great, not terrible. He is an extremely reluctant writer so I am not sure what will work for him. I just added in Killgallon Sentence Composing which he doesn't hate (as long as he can do it orally). I can see writing being the one subject where we will struggle finding the right materials.
But, for our first year, I think we are doing great!
