  1. I am confused about the "8 weeks left" comment because you have a lot more than 8 weeks from now to February.   I think I would mostly continue on the path we were on, but maybe add some fun outings.  That is what I miss the most now that my oldest has returned to public school.  Also, you could probably get good advice from the school counselor about what to work on. Possibly a review or intro to his upcoming subjects.  Best of luck!

  2. Help!  DD needs to find a secondary source to support her essay topic on "The Outcasts of Poker Flat".  The assignment is to use literary journals, critical essays, or criticisms. She is not to use sources such as blogs, student essays, Wikipedia, or other non-credible sources. Her basic premise is you can't judge a book by its cover ( will sound more academic in the essay!) We have googled all afternoon and are finding nothing you can see without a membership or fee.  Of course this is due tomorrow and the libraries are already closed.  If you have any ideas on websites, please let me know.

  4. Not Canadian, but we went to Niagara Falls, ON in June.  Our biggest surprise was our GPS didn't work in Canada.  Apparently you have to buy one with the Canada option. We had a paper map but it was definitely harder to get around without the help of the GPS.

We found the casino to be the cheapest place for both money exchange and for parking.  Our hotel charged $35/night for parking but was connected by skywalk to the casino where parking cost $5. (We stayed at the Hilton Niagara).

We had no trouble crossing the border but the Canadian guard seemed sure we had guns. You know, because people from the South always bring guns.  We didn't have any problem with our cooler full of groceries-they didn't even ask.  But the guns, they asked about that several times in several ways.  Even, "it's ok if you have one in the car that you forgot, we can keep it for you until you leave Canada."

  5. If it weren't maternity, I would definitely say get something new. If you don't plan on ever being pregnant again after this one, maybe try to borrow something from a friend. If they don't step up and help you, still get something new. Feeling pretty in the 3rd trimester is priceless!

  6. I would wait and watch a bit longer, but my vet is open from 7:30 until noon on Saturdays and takes walk ins.

My general rule of thumb is to give it 24 hours. If the pet is still throwing up (or having diarrhea) at that time then I start considering the vet. If it's still going on at 48 hours then the vet is a definite. Of course that is a very general rule and may be amended depending on how much the pet is throwing up (or having diarrhea), how sick (or not) the pet is acting, and the age and general health status.

I just checked the vet's hours and realized ours is also open on Saturday for a half day-who knew? That makes me more comfortable about giving it some time.

  7. I would. I had a cat who did this when he ate something he shouldn't have - like rubber bands and erasers. He vomited when his digestive tract was blocked.

Did your cat act normal? We had another cat who did have a blockage, but she was very lethargic and wouldn't move or eat at all. This cat is jumping up on window sills, chirping at the birds outside, and appears completely fine.

  8. My kitty is 3 years old, spayed, and otherwise healthy. Yesterday afternoon she threw up, no biggie since they do that all the time. 3 hours later, she did it again, then 2 hours after that, and again around 11:30pm. At that point I took away the food dish and went to sleep. I found one spot this morning where she threw up some water during the night.

She has not thrown up anymore and has definitely eaten some food today. I have not seen her drink water or use her litter box.

She does not act sick in any way (other than the vomit).

This is an indoor only cat, no diet change, no plants in the house, nothing I can think of to explain her being sick yesterday.

So, do I need to take her in or just keep an eye on things. Remember it is Friday.

    Thanks!

  9. In case you don't already know, it may not just expire. Unless you have changed your account settings from Amazon's default, Prime automatically renews without even an email to let you know. Generally convenient, but something to be aware of if you don't want it anymore.

  10. Our soccer team did really well selling bed sheets. (Google it, it's actually a popular fundraiser!) They were not overpriced, the quality was good, and it was something people could actually use. Our local school's cheerleaders do well selling laundry soap. Again, reasonable price, good quality, and everyone needs it.

  11. My DH works in pediatric orthopedics and is adamantly saying (while rolling his eyes in dismay) don't worry about this too much.  He suggests that maybe this ortho doesn't see a lot of scoliosis cases and that where DH works they wouldn't think much of a 16 degree curve, absent of other serious symptoms.  16 degree is a very minor curve, usually only treated by observation. Please make sure you have a doctor you can trust, preferably a pediatric orthopedist.

  12. We have been happy with The Boy's Body Book.  It is as similar as I could find to  the popular American Girls body book for girls (if you know that one). I ordered it from Amazon.

eta:  The edition being sold on Amazon is a newer version than the one we have, but it looks like it hasn't changed much.  Also, when you look this book up, Amazon shows several other suggestions as well.

  13. If you have more time than money, you might ask if your local high schools are giving sports physicals soon.  Our local HS just did them last week for $10/kid as a fund raiser for their sports medicine program.  I'm not sure how common this is, but it's a great deal if you can find it.

  14. Thanks so much for all the help!

Matryoshka, do you think driving into the city or parking somewhere west of Boston and riding in on the subway would be better?  It looks like some stations have parking available.  What if we drove to somewhere near Harvard (wanted kids to see it) and rode in from there?

We are early risers so could likely be at the station by 7-7:30.

  15. Well, there is that...   Parking at the Common is very easy and centrally located, but you do have to navigate there first.  The problem with Boston is that none of the streets are straight, and if you miss your turn, you can't go around the block to get back, you end up somewhere mysterious with no idea how to get back.  (and this explains some of the crazy moves Boston drivers make - illegal U-turns are sometimes your only hope).   I know Boston well, so I don't think about it so much anymore ;)  I'm sure GPS helps now, with its 'recalculate' feature when you've gone wrong (or it may drive you in to the harbor - I don't always trust that GPS  )

    Where will you be staying?

While I would like to avoid driving in Boston, and  every other big city, I think it will be a necessary evil. I especially hate that the drive will most likely be right in the middle of rush hour.

We are staying in (I think) Auburn, MA the night before and Plymouth the night of the day we see Boston. Hope that makes sense!

My other parking idea was to park at the Nautica Parking near the USS Constitution and ride the water shuttle first thing, walking back to the Common to begin the Freedom Trail. Would that be any better traffic wise?  It saves a few dollars in parking cost, but not enough to be the determining factor.
