  1. Yes, I tend to agree with engaging the braggers and encouraging them...mostly to make them feel at ease and see I'm not a threat. However, there are some you will NEVER win over. Not against accomplishment..quite the contrary...we love it...try to role model it. I guess that I just disagree that constant bragging (not talking about the once in a while being truly joyful of an achievement kind) will instill an attitude of accomplishment or encourage a child to achieve.
  2. I don't know, but in my circle everyone always complains about how awful their day/week/year has been and how burned out they are. I have started avoiding certain people because I am tired of hearing how much they hate homeschoolng. Bragging sounds like a breath of fresh air right now. Well, that's true too...the "victim" mindset. The other extreme that is loud! Just as grating!
  3. I'm talking about bragging about our kids...not so much on message boards and stuff where we are looking for support, but rather in real life. I've been commiserating over our year. There are so many things I COULD brag about to others, but I just don't do it. I don't want to be "that mom." Yet, in our home school groups, extra curricular activities, and even church, if I look back, I know I hear parents brag loud and often. Usually, it is the same ones too. Sometimes, they are clever and mask the brag being "thankful." Others are in your face brags. I just think "why the constant need?" Don't get me wrong. I think we should be proud of our kids to THEM. Others will naturally be proud without us bragging every five seconds. I'll be honest it bothers me for people to compete with accomplishments of their kids. One thing I noticed, my closest friends have "real" faulty kids like mine and they don't brag non-stop. Every once in a while, we'll share our victories, but many times, we share our on-going challenges. I just wonder is this an American thing, home schooling thing, or a parenting thing? Hope44
  4. So, I'm putting in my big R&S order (directly to their headquarters in Crockett, Ky) and I come across something in the catalog I've never seen before. For grade 2, it has two math programs listed. The first one is "Working Arithmetic" which I'm sure is just the second grade level of what we were doing in first. The second one is called "Working with Numbers." Is one of these conceptual? It doesn't look like they are Part One and Part Two of the same program. It looks like you choose between the two. I'm guessing "Working with Numbers" is conceptual and I've never seen it before. I have Miquon for concepts. Anyone know? I've used first, third, and fourth grade math materials from Rod and Staff, but have no experience with their second grade. TIA :001_smile:
  5. Liberty University. Yes, I graduated from there. However, they have a superb nursing school and offer TONS of scholarships. My dd is a student there and had set her sights on nursing until she went on a missions trip and changed her major. One of my friends is a head nurse here in our adjacent city and she went to Lynchburg College. She told me when they get the Liberty grads, they are the BEST! She said they do not have to "re-train" them correctly and they come in ready to work! We have a ton of nursing schools nearby, so I knew this was a huge review. Liberty is easy to get into, but not easy to stay (academically speaking). Their nursing school is TOUGH. Many enter...about 1/4-1/3 actually graduate with a degree in nursing. Also, be aware LU is no longer an "open" admissions school. About the mission trip...Liberty offers tons, but the one my dd went on transferred all of the costs of the trip into scholarship tuition money. So, the $3,500 for the trip was applied to her tuition. Plus, their trips are life changing:) The trips are for high school students and college students alike. Xtremeimpact. Hope this helps! Hope44
  6. that states the number of children to aim for or NOT to aim for, so I'm assuming then God wants us to not twist His Scripture to force a family size philosophy on anyone else. I think we humans love to read books written by other humans and give them WAY to much authority in our lives. I do believe God is fair. He owns time and space and I can't transcend either one to know how He uses terrible, painful, circumstances that I or anyone else has experienced to help others in the future. When the father of a boy who will never walk or think normally told me this, I was floored. How often do I demand that God be fair? Ah, yes. I want Him to be "fair" according to what my definitions of "fair" is. Blessings, Hope44
  7. Hi! I've been home educating for over ten years now. Oldest ds is a junior at Liberty University. DD is a junior also at Liberty University. Ds 12, is a math, science, and drumming whiz and a reading phenom! Ds 7 is a cuddly sweet, football kind of guy. Ds, 1, is our surprise who spends his time nursing, toddling, and playing with all kinds of things! A little about me: I love to read, knit, play piano, sing, draw, make jewelry, ride horses, and travel. In 1990, I received my bachelor's in Marketing and worked until third child was almost three. My dh loves to read, play sports with his kiddos, and the Redskins! He owns his own business and I used to work for him. We met at LU where he received his degree in Finance. Good to be here! Hope44
  8. Hi everyone! We are starting our eleventh year of home education. One of the first books I read before beginning our journey was TWTM! We do a mix of educational methodology and it seems to work for us. I have five wonderful kids...ds 21 junior at Liberty University, dd 19 junior at Liberty University, ds 12 loves his drums, math, science and just an all around reader, ds 7 loves Rod and Staff Bible, not into math so much, trying out football this year, ds 1...the surprise of our lives. He loves to snuggle, nurse, and smile. He also enjoys playing with books:) Little bit about me...graduated from Liberty University in 1990 with a degree in business marketing. I worked until third child was 2 1/2 and we pulled oldest two out of school to learn at home. I love to read, play the piano, make jewelry, knit, ride horses, camp, and travel. Dh owns his own business and we worked together for a while. He is a steadfast love who also loves to read, keep up with technology, and enjoy his kiddos. We're hoping to incorporate Nature Studies much more this year. Blessings, Hope44
