  1. We are starting easy also! I too am waiting on the email confirming the VP class my ds is in. That is what he wanted to begin with this week. Other ds is starting his SL stuff, and older ds starts his two cc classes today. I have to ease into the whole school thing so its not such a shock to my lazy summer system :) But it will be good to be back into our regular routine.

  2. We bought the Trail Guide to Geography, the Ultimate geography and timeline guide, and the answer atlas. There are answers in the trail guide and you need that to do the course. A globe and atlas are pretty crucial too. If I remember right (we did this at home, no co-op for a ninth grade credit), there were extra mapping assignments in the trailguide that the student needed to go to the ultimate guide to do. These extra assignments were for mapping and more in depth detail of facts. We also bought the Uncle Josh cd of outline maps so we could just print off the ones we needed. I had my ds do all the mapping assignments in both books as well as some writing assignments listed in the trail guide. I would think you would definately need the TG book. There are answers in the back for the daily challenge questions. Does any of this help?

BTW' date=' oldest still loves Covenant and is super active there (plus has a fiance from there). He even worked there over the summer. How's your guy doing?[/quote']

Oldest is working there this summer also! He still absolutely loves being there. He is talking about staying after graduation to work. I am ok with that as he still isn't sure where his calling is. He has worked for facilities all summer and has enjoyed being on his own.

I read some of the thread about your ds's future roomate. I am so sorry for his and your loss!

We have not gone to VT because ds thinks its a waste of time. I keep advising him not to count on UVA. He knows other homeschoolers who are there and thinks he has a good shot at getting in. I have heard so many stories around here of class valdictorians and Eagle scouts who are top of their class not getting accepted. I am just having a hard time letting God lead him! I thought it would be easier this time around but it's not. Different kid, different goals, and more involved applications. Good to 'talk' to you!

  4. Hey Creekland! We are starting round 2 also with next ds. He is focused on engineering of some kind - mechanical, computer or aerospace. His first choice school is UVA with Grove City as a back up. He is adamant that he does not want to go to VA Tech! Anything you could post that might help him reconsider? I think he is put off by the big school atmosphere. He sat in on some UVAclasses and liked that they were smaller (not freshman classes, as they will be huge too.)

Ds #2 is also not the least interested in Covenant! Wants to get right into engineering and does not want the liberal arts degree. I have no peace about any of his choices for different reasons. Praying much already for guidance.

We got dd9 a Nook for her birthday recently. I hate it!

Barnes & Noble doesn't have anything free. No free books. No free apps. Even Fruit Ninja costs money.

I have the Kindle app on my IPad and I have TONS of free kids books through Amazon. My library also has more Kindle books than EPub books for loan.

I am either going to sell her Nook or root it so we can get Kindle books and apps.

I am so surprised at your post! I have a Nook tablet that I absolutely love. Nook offers apps for free as well as tons of books. They have Free Fridays on their blogs which lists 25+ books for free. My nook is filled with all sorts of books and apps that were free. I have never paid over $5 for a book and have gotten some epubs free from other book sharing sites. My boys are always downloading free games too. We have popcorn ninja not fruit ninja:)

I also have lots of kids books that I downloaded free from b&n. Just wanted to let others know that b&n does offer lots of free material!

  6. I have some textbooks, like 3 Chicago Math Trig texts, a computer programming text and a Pearson Precal text. These are not selling on the For Sale forum (I've tried over the years) and most places I check say they are not buying back these texts at this time. I have checked over the summer for the past couple years, with Abebooks.com, and I get the same thing. What do you do with old textbooks???

One I bought through the Potters School bookstore and they won't even buy back the text they sold me:confused:

  7. We have a very sweet mannered lovable schnoodle! Part mini poodle, part mini schnauzer. He is all black, has hair, not fur and the most adorable eyes ever. He was easy to train and rarely barks. Everyone that has met him, says he is the sweetest thing ever. He has never shown any agressiveness at all. I know many people with schnoodles and they will tell you how great they are. Find a breeder near you and go check them out. Pick the quiet shy pup and you should be good. Watch out for the one who is jumping on the others and biting ears!

  8. I am blown away that SL sells what looks to be a fantastic psych program with text, study guide, and workbook/diary exercises..BUT NO SL STYLE SCHEDULE???? AM I the only one who expected it to be included with the program?:glare:

The author has objectives, but its quite confusing to match up the readings with the quizzes, with the workbook...

Does anyone have a schedule of this program that they used that breaks up the work through out the week?

I guess I am just so spoiled by SL and feel really disapointed in the lack of schedule with this program.

If anyone can help, I would be grateful...really, really grateful:)

  9. We do here with our 17 ds. He purchased himself a Galaxy media player and it is a really neat device. He has alwYs had limits since he was little. Recently, I see him with the thing in his hand all. The. Time. He texts friends non stop. Plus he is winding down his classes and has little to do after lunch. Yesterday I asked him to limit his netflix watching until after 3 pm because it just causes too much conflict with the younger boys. I suggested he read a real book! I just cannot condone movie watching during our school hrs.

We really want him to set his own limits and mostly he does a good job. We as a family need to have more tech-free days. Sometimes we are all in our separate corners on our own devices! In this day and age, it is an uphill battle with technology in our house :glare:
