  1. the stresses and problems affecting a pastor's family?

I'm headed out this afternoon to a pastor's wives retreat. So looking forward to encouraging some of the wives that live in small towns in Western Montana. Almost all are bivocational and churches under 50 people. Many of their husbands have served over 20 years in the same small community where the church will never grow because there aren't the people. We have great distances between communities so they all feel extremely isolated. Our weekend will consist of sharing, prayer, singing, walks, etc. Nothing fancy but an extreme blessing. If anyone wants to bless a few pastor's wives you might consider arranging something like this!

  2. Bumping this thread because I'm still just...so frustrated. We went on a field trip Friday, and then got stomach flu over the weekend. I'm trying so hard not to end up with a colossal traffic jam on HST, but I've got a list of undone assignments, and I need to say, "We didn't do school that day. Bump everything down." and I CAN'T.

My homeschool planner should NOT be worse to deal with than the actual vomiting child who needs me to bump his work.

Quick, somebody tell me where the easy button is! I totally cannot understand why such a popular planner would lack this simple tool.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your question but if I am correct it is very easy. Just highlight all the assignments (you click on your first one and hold the shift button down until you are at the last one) and right click and choose reschedule. On the top right will be a date to begin. You choose the day and all the assignments will reschedule correspondingly. i.e. all the Mondays will move to Tuesday and all the Tuesdays to Wednesday etc.

  3. My daughter has had a non stop headache as long as she can remember. It varies from a 3 to a 8 out of 10. Many, many people have prayed for her and I know a number that pray for her daily. Some are so excited when they have heard some new possibility but it is because they love and care. I've really tried to remember where their heart is rather than think we tried that 3 years ago! Occasionally some advise has been worth checking out. One benefit of trying to be gracious is people have really surrounded and cheered for my daughter. She is doing an 8 month internship at an orphanage in Africa and they have supported her in so many ways. They are thrilled to see her push through and succeed in life.

  4. The school and degree my son is leaning towards will accept AP Comp Government and Politics and US Government and Politics and US History. He is heading towards a math/science major and these would cover the universities general ed classes so it would lighten his load several different semesters. He will take a Computer Science A AP test this spring so I have that one laid out.

I do not want to pay for an online class if possible. I would love suggestions of laid out curriculum that would prepare him for the tests. I am not planning on having the actual courses approved by AP - just want him to do great on the tests! I've tried to do some searching on here and haven't been very successful. I'm heading over to the College Board but always find it overwhelming! Feel free to point me to some helpful threads too.

    Thanks for any help.

  5. Really liked it for our daughter. I thought she learned a lot and it will really stick with her. The combination of videos, books, answers, etc. really accomplished true learning. Definitely very conservative so won't be for everyone. Her only complaint is the info kept being repeated in different forms and we, after much research, somehow ended up with the wrong edition of one of the books so not all the questions lined up.

  6. I scheduled each lesson for 3 days. Theoretically he was supposed to watch the video and do the review section on one day and spend two days on the lesson work. He tended to do all the review on one or two days for a chapter and then spread it out the lessons how he felt led. It all got done, just not my plan! If he had followed my plan it fit easily into a year so that my be a starting point.

  7. I would choose Economics in a Box, which is not on your list:0)

Common Sense Economics would be my 2nd choice. It is one of the books used in Economics in a Box. I'm reading it right now, and would be hesitant to use it as a stand alone curriculum. The website for the book has worksheets, tests, and lots of extras that could beef it up.

We loved Economics in a Box. It is quite conservative - to give you an idea they use John Stossel a fair bit. Felt my oldest really understood economics after the course.

  8. Thanks all!

I'm trying to think of what it is with Saxon beyond jumping around. One of the other issues is that she is learning to do it in their book but doesn't carry it over real well to other things. With Singapore she can visualize and do it great when she is in that section but doesn't always have it long term. A quick review and she has it again but I want it a little more second nature and firm.

I'll look into Art of Problem solving. I will consider Chalkdust although I know they are always expensive. Any other suggestions?

  9. My youngest is half way through Saxon 8/7 and finishing Singapore 6A. She has done Saxon and Singapore most of grade school. She has math facts down cold and because of Singapore has a strong ability to do fractions, percents, decimals etc - most of the time. She still will get mixed up or forget how they relate.

I remember with my older two not being impressed with Singapore 6B or the end of Saxon 8/7. Seemed they jumped around and all. Next year I have the choice of finishing these two or doing a different prealgebra.

My older son does Chalkdust and my daughter has done Teaching Textbooks all the way through and the then dual enrolled in precalculus and did great. I haven't decided on a path for the youngest.

So at this point - what is the strongest math to totally cement all those things she needs for Algebra?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

  10. Are the questions for discussion designed to be only oral or is the student encouraged to write answers?

How much, if any, do these questions affect writing assignments?

How much time does your student devote each day?

How many and what credits do you think you will give for the core?

    Thank you so much!

Is the student guide separate from the parent materials? I guess I didn't realize that was the case. Are all of the questions in that guide or the parent guide? You mentioned a concern about the Flames of Rome book. I'm not familiar with it. Would you mind sharing your concern about it?

    Thanks!

The questions could easily be done orally or written. I require some written since we only discuss it once a week (and occasionally have gone two weeks) and I know my students won't remember it that long.

I really can only guess at time because I don't track what they are doing each day. I give them 1 credit for history, 1 credit for literature. They also get one credit for LA but this includes Wordly Wise, some grammar review, etc. Just these writing assignments would not add up to a full credit and they are so literature analysis based that I always feel like part of it goes towards the literature credit (my transcript doesn't show that but in my mind the writing is split between the writing and literature analysis).

The discussion questions are history and the writing is literature analysis for the most part.

The Flames of Rome book is a very well written book about Rome at its worst. I had my daughter read it but not my son. Just too many sensual images to implant in my sons mind. It is definitely a family by family or child by child decision! I'm sure that is why Sonlight took it out when they felt they had a good book to replace it with.

  11. This year I have about killed myself putting together my own curriculum for a number of subjects. History has been the biggest thorn in my side because I can barely keep up with the reading & discussion, writing assignments, test designing, etc. So, I've got to find a more student driven approach that still keeps me involved, but literally does most of the work for me. I've followed WTM chronological approach to history since 1st grade & dd will be in 9th. I know this is a different path for us, but I think it might prove spiritually & intellectually stimulating for dd.

What is your overall impression of this core?

How much teacher involvement did it require?

How would you describe the critical thinking aspect of the core?

How was the language arts? Any comments....

    Was there any testing included?

    Thank you,

    Jennifer

I've absolutely loved it for my oldest two. It has been a great overview of the history of Christianity. It has really made them think through theology and why different branches of the church believe different things. There are two main essentials though! They must read diligently and in some way answer the questions. If you met with them daily they shouldn't have to write them out but I only meet with them once a week. It takes 30-45 minutes on average to go over the questions. They have to write out the answers enough that they can answer the questions orally for me. I will say that the second time around I really cut out a lot of the questions on the second half of From Jerusalem to Iran Jira - it had a lot of little details about many, many missionaries.

The writing portion of the Core addresses the literature analysis of the readings. I think it is great for my son who is a Freshman but it doesn't hold his hand and he has had some other writing instruction (IEW and LTOW) and will have some research, college prep type writing instruction in future years.

    Hope that helps some.
