  1. Dd felt her APUSH exam went well with school #1 on Friday, and I just returned from dropping her off at school #2 for Bio.  Just a few minutes after leaving her at the school I got a text from her saying that they didn't have enough materials for her.  I went into the school and they had me sit in the office.  After sitting there for awhile and getting no more texts from dd I asked the secretaries if they'd found materials for her.  It turned out that the person who walked her to her room brought her to the wrong AP Bio room and the other room had her materials.  Whew!  Crisis averted!

:svengo:   So glad everything was OK! I hope she was able to keep calm and carry on!

  2. I'm sitting right behind you on the log flume ride of science, and I can tell you that the reason we are tensing up is because we hear the click of the ratchet mechanism that is towing us up to high school.

Even you have left out the variable of lab science - at home? is there a live option? virtual? dual enrollment? how many?

Keep your arms inside the ride at all times.

  3. I dropped my very sick daughter off for her AP Studio Art work day. She finished her last piece last night. She isn't happy with it but it had to be done by today. She has to photograph it, edit the photo to color correct it and upload it to the site. Then she has 3 more pieces to matte, spray on a fixative and shrink-wrap it to protect the pastel pigments and box them up to send off. I'll probably have to pick her up soon.

  4. D is taking her last AP right now! I am done, done, done with teaching

I am so excited for her next step in life :) and for what my future brings :)

Good luck to both of you!!

We're still in this mode - 9th grade. Going to 2nd AP today (Govt) at new & different HS. Leaving in less than 1/2 hour...

    Hope everything goes smoothly!

  5. I know it does.  It has been quite the ride.  DD's first AP exam was AP Chem as a sophomore followed by Calc BC, AP Lang, and AP Latin.  I will never forget the angst with the first drop off and the first year of testing 4 APs.  Flash forward to senior year, and she's like "I've got this; no biggie"  It's amazing and beautiful to watch them grow and develop.

LIke you, I have so many memories with these events (who would've thought?). Honestly, I feel kind of ridiculous but it is what it is. :)  I have decided to be happy, happy, happy for her through her graduation party and pull a Scarlet O'Hara "I'll think about that tomorrow."

  6. My DS #1 took two AP tests this week and will take the last one next week. At this moment I feel more emotional than worried about his score. It was DS who wanted to take more AP's as a senior even though we all knew that these won't effect his admission to the college- as long as he doesn't mess them up. Who knew I'd be emotionally attached to AP tests?

I still remember his very first AP test day. How nervous we were. How I walked him to the office of local HS. How I anxiously waited his call asking me to pick him up from school. At this point, anything we've done routinely brings back too much memories.

  and  :crying:   Suddenly I feel grateful that we still have a couple more cycles of AP exams! So bittersweet...

    This too shall pass...

  7. Thank you Attolia and WMA! I am not concerned at all now. I was only nervous about the pretest process of how wrong things could go. Now that it is done, I am already thinking about how to make this summer fun for the kid. 😊 Step A (buy more books!!!) has already begun lol.

Thanks again and hugs back to all. We went for pizza (the quick choose your toppings, done in 10 mins type). Our kids have worked so hard. Wishing them a good break soon.

Yes to the bolded!!! I am already daydreaming about our post AP Exam browsing at the bookstore!

  8. I have salt spoons, because I think they are so darned cute.

I have used them maybe a total of 5 times in my life, because they can also be darned pretentious.  That's always the risk with this kind of stuff.  But it's fun.

Besides, it's always good to be prepared in case the fairies drop in for tea...

  9. Life is messy and sometimes hard events just happen all at once.

Absolutely! There's no way anyone can prepare precisely for the details of each and every stressful event.

She will survive and learn from this experience, and be stronger because of it, though. And her faith will (hopefully) provide strength and stamina.

It sounds like she is doing the right things -- planning, eating well, exercising, taking time for fun. The final push of the year can be so tough...  It sounds like she's pulling through, though. Sometimes surviving, learning, and becoming stronger are what we need to keep our focus on -- especially if everything else falls from our line of sight...

Just keep swimming. It may sound trite, but sometimes in times of deep stress it's all we can do. One stroke, one breath at a time.

  10. Yes, I've often thought how inefficient AP tests are for earning college credit. ;)

Dual enrollment and/or CLEP tests are a much quicker method of earning credit, and allow for earning much MORE credit in the same amount of time as taking an AP class and studying all year for AP tests. :) (Of course, just like AP scores, DE and CLEP are also subject to college policies as to whether they will be accepted or not.)

Not suggesting there isn't a need or a reason for AP classes and tests, but earning college credit is more of a "perk" than the main reason.

    :iagree:

We have friends that don't understand why my teen does AP classes and exams when the classes at the local CC and the local 4-year-uni (highly-ranked and well-regarded) are both easier and a much surer bet for college credit. (To be honest, the last two weeks in April and the first two weeks in May, I always wonder myself!  ;) )

CLEP would also be a much easier route for credit.

In the end, it's not all about the credit for everyone.

  11. "Anecdotally, it appears that fewer colleges may be accepting AP credit. But Warne says there's no central data collection that would let us know for sure. If you can't get college credit, it removes a major economic motivation for taking the courses."

Absolutely but maybe just take the course skip the exam - my DS took 4 AP courses this year at his B&M charter, one of them AP Physics 1 Algebra based can't be used for future credit since he will be a STEM major so we skipped the exam - didn't need the extra stress and also pay $93 - but the course was worthwhile because it was more challenging than the regular Physics. It is taught using a college text and Webassign for the problem sets.

Would folks still do PAHS if no possible college credit?

We would. College credit is just a bonus for us, not the main incentive.

ETA: Even now we know some people who take AP classes, but decide not to sit for the exam.

  12. I found an old stainless pattern that is pretty  . . .so, I'm thinking.

    s-l500.jpg

but the knives all look tarnished - so I've no idea how much stainless they actually are. . . .but they're pretty.  I really don't want the portmeirion ones.

    Just a thought...

Depending on your lifestyle/decorating style, these could be enjoyed every day by having them sitting out somewhere -- tarnish and all. Definitely depends on the overall vibe of your kitchen/dining room, though.

You could then polish them when you plan to use them, but enjoy them "as is" the rest of the time.

  13. Oh no. Disaster. Dd is sick with bug that kept me out of commission for 4 days. She didn't want to miss her APUSH class today since they are still learning content. Tomorrow is portfolio work day for art. Starting the bone broth now. Will be bring her tea and elderberry syrup when she wakes up.

My heart just sank even further for dd. Her last piece for her art portfolio is sitting here only about 10% finished. She usually puts about 8 hours into each piece. It could be worse. At least it is pastel, which is a faster medium than paint or colored pencil.

Oh no!  :grouphug:  to you both! Wishing her a speedy recovery!

  14. Stainless would probably be what I'd choose. The ones you posted are pretty, but given the tarnish and unknown composition, I might keep looking. Unless, of course, you don't mind a bit of extra upkeep.

  15.

here's one set-  very colorful - but would go with my dishes.  I think, the colors might be too bright.  (portmierion botanic garden)

I also thought about a solid white one, or an acrylic mother-of-pearl, or find a solid stainless.

    options?

I agree with your thoughts that they are possibly a bit too bright for your dishes. I also wonder if they would compete with the dishes.  I would probably go with one of the other options you mention. I have a mix of patterns (including some portmeirion botanic garden) and my butter knives are stainless, but white or acrylic mother-of-pearl would also work well.

The ones you posted might be better suited for Fiestaware or something similar.

I agree with the others, though, get what makes you happy. The colors are fun and it looks like a nice set.

  16. If only! I think both of my dc's rooms are worse than ever right now. And I don't have the heart to nag. Perhaps I should try to explain how cleaning can act as stress-relief?

Trying to explain anything to someone in the throes of studying for AP Exams should be undertaken only after giving due consideration to the risks involved. No one on this thread accepts any responsibility for the resultant tantrums, eye-rolls, slamming of books (or doors) which may come as a result of such explanations. Proceed with caution and at your own risk.
