  1. I just finished reading Keeping House by Margaret Peterson. (I thought it had been discussed here, but I can't find the thread.) This quote from the last chapter really struck me as profound. As a homeschooler, I often feel like I have to achieve "maximum efficiency"... which I don't achieve... and then I am very frustrated. What are your thoughts?

"Efficiency can be the enemy of hospitable housekeeping, especially in the face of small or large emergencies. All too often, efficiency is just another name for being spread too thin. A few years ago there were massive cascading power failures all over the eastern United States that were eventually attributed in part to design features meant to make the distribution of power as efficient as possible. It turned out that because all parts of the system were working at maximum efficiency all of the time, the system as a whole had no way to adjust to problems, and small-scale disruptions rapidly became large-scale catastrophes.

Maximum efficiency in housekeeping routines can have the same effect. If we are working as fast as we can, all the time, there is no way to adjust to the inevitable disruptions. Moreover, maximum efficiency easily turns into no rest for the weary. You are never done because the plan is never to be done; the plan is to be working at something or other, full speed ahead, all the time."

  2. I am in charge of overhauling our church nursery. It is in poor shape right now, with lots of old yucky toys. I am going to purchase some type of baskets/bins/containers for the toy shelves. I want to fill the 6 containers with 6 types of toys. What toys do you suggest? Maybe blocks, cars, Little People?

What large toys are good for a church nursery? Slide, kitchen, rocking horse??

I'd love to hear your ideas. TIA!

  3. Though we do sing songs about Jesus' birth during this time of year (we actually sing them at other times too, though), we really see Christmas as a family tradition -- all about fun, giving, and feasting.

Dec 25 was not chosen for it's Christian significance, and Jesus most likely was NOT born in December. We stopped trying to put the Christ back in Christmas and stopped calling Jesus the reason for the season -- choosing to have pure, simple fun this time of the year and making sure we walk in a manner worthy of His calling every day of the year.

:iagree: This is our view too.

  4. The shower stall in our master bath is just gross. The caulk around the door is moldy and the metal is rusty. Has anyone opted for a shower curtain instead of a door for a stand-alone shower stall? Would it work?

I hate cleaning shower doors, especially when they never really get clean. And I'm sure replacing it would cost quite a bit. Any ideas?

  5. Our public high school offers the International Baccalaureate program. My oldest child is in 6th grade right now, but I am looking ahead a few years and wondering if this might be something good for her to pursue. I don't know much about the program. Do any of you have experience with it? How difficult is the program? My daughter isn't super smart, but she works hard. Is it hard to get into an IB program?

  6. Every reformed church I have attended had either the word Reformed or Presbyterian in the name. So that is a good place to start. But there are many presbyterian churches that are not reformed, so you will have to investigate further. If you can find out what denomination they are in, that is helpful. PCA, OPC, RP and BP are some reformed denominations that I would recommend.

  7. and will do it again this year with the 8th grade book. Our son is not a writing person, akin to torture for him. I figure he needs to write in other subjects so he learns to write, so why add math as well. When he starts algebra, we will switch to using notebook paper.

Even though there were some problems that couldn't be done in the book, the ones that could helped with the copying out. I would say we got through half the year before it became necessary to copy out very much.

Thanks everyone! I think I will definitely let my son write in the textbook for 4th grade, but maybe I will consider it for my daughter also who is in 6th. My daughter actually struggles with it more than my son. Thanks for the input! :)
