Ok - so this would be for 4 months from now. Currently, she is in ps kgarten, and only "reads" a few words. However, she LOVES the idea of learning to read..........she's also working well on her letters, I think. There are only a few that trip her up....

Thanks, Rose.
Any other BTDT recommendations. My dd will be 6 1/4 when she starts 1st grade and is an average student so far....
-
Or do most people wait a year?
-
Thanks, Wendi - now it's on my list.......
-
I, too, consider Singapore Math mastery.........

If you're referring to her suggested daily schedule, which seems daunting, I doubt if anyone does. SWB admitted that she put the suggested schedule in the book mostly at the publisher's request.
I would suspect that most folks here follow a good chunk of it. I consider us followers, even though some of our curricula choices aren't SWB's highest recommended choices.

Shasta Mom!!! I don't know you and I don't want to sound freaky.... but your blog is the best! What a wonderful life you have...and what great experiences for your kids! Bravo!
Okay....hijack over.
Climbing Parnassus is a hard read...... but I find it invigorating! ....and isn't that what life is really about? Being challenged and loving it.....knowing something is difficult but yearning to do more of it? (gotta find my copy of it and try it again!).
Gosh, thanks, Pam! Now I feel guilty for not keeping it current the last month or so. Yes, we feel very fortunate to be able to live our life as we are doing now. Let's hope it continues!

I've posted quite a bit of being a Lively Latin proponent. We're 2/3 through the Big Book 1 of the series and like it a lot. We chose to do the download option - print as we go.
Lfc and the other one are also popular here.
You can find endless discussions about these if you use the "search" tab in the blue strip below the welcome box in the upper right of your screen. Latin is quite a popular topic here!

I felt totally humbled reading it, also at bedtime. What a mistake. Well I read it through twice, all at bedtime and came away with the general idea of ..................and then I couldn't remember what I had read the night before. He had some wonderful points in there on education and the history of it. I should re read it in the morning - but - alas - I'm busy! I wish he would hae used chapters and subchapters. I remember finding the lack of those annoying, adn made it harder to follow..Now I'm ispired to try the Homer book mentioned........

Two thumbs up for Lively Latin

I never studied Latin and we are 2/3 through Lively Latin Book 1 and it's my favorite curriculum of the year. We opted for the dowload version and print out lessons as we go. There are pronunciation guides at the website as well as games. The Roman history included has been fascinating for us as well as the history of Latin and world languages. I am learning along with my 10 yo ds and not a day goes by when we notice something derived from latin.
We started with Prima Latina in 3rd grade (which would be too elementary for a 10 yo) and have been thrilled with LL. We haven't tried the other programs. HTH

We have it, and there seems to be a lot there, but in all honesty - I forget about it. I think it's because our schedule is so full that to add a 15 minute video is many times out of the question schedule-wise........I've been wondering about it's relevance now with YouTube that seems to be broadening it's scope.
However, there is an excellent beginning (and intermediate, I think) Spanish program - really good I thought, and I've viewed age-appropriate videos on puberty, science - gosh - it's all there.
I think there is a free month trial period........

Well, if it's any consolation, lesson 1 seemed to take us forever, and I had my doubts. For some reason, it's the crux pitch of the book. I'm not sure why the games don't work - I'll defer to someone else on that.
For the chants, it's good that dc does them so he can learn the pronunciation. Make the flash cards and memorize their meanings. A nice aspect of LL is that there aren't a lot of vocabulary words - it's more grammar-based...We chose to do each lesson in the order presented to break things up (and so I wouldn't have to plan yet another curriculum), so when a history selection was next we did it. We ended up loving the history and we now look forward to it.
My newly 10 ds is now on lesson 11 after starting mid september. I anticipate finishing bb1 at the end of August (perhaps).
Just keep plugging, don't forget the flash cards, and enjoy it. I think it will all come around. It has been my favorite curriculum of the year out of all that we use, and I've been pretty happy with our selections......HTH

We've done 2A-5A, and I bought two HIG's and rarely used them. However, I'm a minimalist, and am not intimidated by math.............
-
I inherited Eagle of the Ninth, and we love Rosemary Sutcliff, and my 10 yo ds love Roman history - so is it a shoe in? It seems a bit long...........
-
Yes - that's my understanding and I think Amy from Writing Tales designed it that way...........
-
and, in addition, isn't it required to change paragraphs if the immediate setting changes?
-
Thanks, I feel better now. With spring break, testing, etc. I found April is a pretty bare month on the learning record.........
Ok - so back to the thread - so now I know to review for a while. Lately, I've been wishing for some tests periodically throughout the program...

Alana - May I ask how long it took to do BB1?
ETA: Did you do the history, also? We're at the beginning of Ch 11 now and it's been 7 months. We're doing history...............
-
I just bought the download and will do it again with LL2. I like it because I print out the lessons as I go (but not the answers - those I just check on the computer). That way, I don't have all this unnecessary printed matter.
It has worked really well for me. I never felt the need for cd's as some folks do.

I guess I'm not planning on upgrading. Even with SWB's new recommendations, it still comes down to what works and I get that here from the boards. Individual curriculum recommendations I take with a grain of salt because of the differences between each child.

Don't buy - RENT! I've been through this starting with a 4 yo who is now 10. We started in a 1/10th then 1/8th then 1/4 then 1/2 and are now in a 3/4. Ifshins in Berkeley is good - you don't have to be onsite to rent. They ship everywhere and do it all the time. They are an excellent shop. I'm sure there are others.......seriously - children grow, and do it fast - it would be silly to buy. A lot of the cheap CHinese violins are awful - but they are beautiful to look at....don't get taken. Rent a quality instrument from a good shop...........BTDT

We held off until 3rd grade and it worked SO WELL! I'm glad I waited!

Why not *RELAX* about "finishing" on time? YES - by all means explore Canadian history! We're near the end of STOW II with a 4th grader and for various reasons haven't done many narrations in the past few months. We're behind and lately read together, look a library books from the AG, discuss (yes - discuss), do informal map and timeline work, and I'm calling it good. I want my ds to be able to have a historical conversation with someone, - not check off the box that we finished STOW II...........remember you goal is to educate your kids. Take time of the subjects that you think are most relevant, and don't worry about other topics. DC won't remember everything anyway......:)
Question about Lively Latin
in K-8 Curriculum Board

.........hmmm my understanding is that they're the same. I have the download version for the same reasons you indicated............
