  1. Hi - I was wondering if anyone knew how to interpret the test. My daughter was above the master range on everything except for Spelling - Structural Units. Her score for structural units was way below mastery. I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what was meant by Structural Units and any ideas for working on it this summer :) Thanks!
  2. I would also recommend http://www.jimmybeanswool.com/ and http://www.imagiknit.com/ .. I love going into imagiknit, it's yarn heaven.
  3. @Jen and HeighHo - What resources did you use if any to help students master D'Nealian?
  4. @BabyBre - I plan on lurking in the classroom. At back to school night they were still setting some of the pull out days so she didn't have the classroom volunteer schedule yet. I am did volunteer for art at least twice .. that should be fun ;) However, since I work fulltime I prefer to spend my time in the class when I can. @fairytalemamma - I agree that D'Nealian is clunky. Any suggestions on a better system?
  5. I will be afterschooling DD6 who is entering first grade. Our focus right now is primarily SM, Phonics and of course lots of reading. DD3 is eager to work on her own "homework", so we are working on Kumon workbooks.
  6. Hi - We attended our back to school night last night. I have to say I love the teacher so far she is extremely open and really wants to communicate and work with the parents. :hurray: We wandered through the classroom and were able to look in our child's desk to see what books they are using for the year. So here is my question.. has anyone had any experience with the following? Language Arts - MacMillan/McGraw-Hill - California Treasures Spelling - MacMillan/McGraw-Hill - California Treasures Math - Scott Foresman - California Mathematics Phonics - Modern Curriculum Press Social Studies - Forgot the name .. Science - Scott Foresman Handwriting - D'Nealian Is there anything I should watch out for? I am using Phonics Pathways and Singapore Math. I was toying with the idea of adding FLL or WWE but I wasn't sure how much she or I could do :) However, if there is something that is a red flag I would like to get a jump on it before I am playing catch up. Thanks!!! :lurk5:
  7. :001_smile: Soccer is more of a dam in our house ... but she loves it. So we support it! With 2 working parents and 2 practices a week going for 90 minutes it's good times :001_smile: Lets just say those nights dinners are leftovers!
  8. Thanks everyone.. I know that whatever schedule I set will have a large dependency on how much work we get for homework. My daughter is one of those kids that needs 10-11 hours of sleep so her bed time is pretty much set and that is very important for everyone  However, I am going to try and set a schedule this summer of the topics I would like to cover in fall so she gets used to it. We will adjust as needed. Like I said during soccer season everything is tough :ack: I am one of those people who need a schedule to shoot for otherwise I will never organize myself  I do know that of all subjects Math is the most important for us.
  9. Thanks for the input. I am trying to figure it out since we will have soccer in the fall (why I agree to that I don't know ). Anyway I am hoping initially to do math daily and phonics/language arts daily or every other day. I am one of those people who needs a schedule. I am also not sure how much homework she will be getting in first grade so that will throw a wrench in my plans too!
  10. Thanks for all the replies. I am going to look into WWE and FLL. Now for more questions. How much time did you spend or are you planning on spending on the subjects if you are doing more than one?
  11. Hi, I was wondering what your plans are or what you did for afterschooling first grade? I am all set for Math, I plan on using Singapore but would love other suggestions or areas you focused on. I am trying to get myself geared up for September. Thanks, Tiffany
  12. I am really hoping to keep ahead of the curve. Now, I need to figure out what else we need to add in and how to schedule it :)
  13. Hi - I can't speak to the dual enrollment or advanced placement. However, I do have a child who has been diagnosed with SPD and we do have modifications in place for her. During circle time, she is allowed a fidget (something small she holds in her hands to keep them occupied), is allowed to stand during table time, is allowed to go to her cubby and brush herself and she has a weighted pad if needed to help her sit still. She keeps her fidgets, brush and weights in her cubby and is responsible for them. Now this all sounds like a lot to ask, however, this was all accomplished by brief after school conversations with her Kindergarten teacher at pickup. Her kindergarten teacher is wonderful and very open! The teacher and principal had no issues with the modifications being requested and she is excelling at school. She does not take any medication. This is very long but basically I would not be afraid to ask for modifications in the classroom. You don't have to be demanding, but it will help your child. Hope that helps!
  14. Thanks so much ... everything is ordered and on it's way ;)
  15. Do you need the teachers manual or are the textbook and the workbooks enough? Thanks for the patience with my millions of questions :)
  16. Alright .. I think I am convinced :) Singapore Math it is... Now my second question for everyone what level should she be at if she has completed K?
  17. Thanks for you replies.. Is Singapore more conducive to afterschooling than say Saxon?
  18. @Roadrunner - She is a few weeks away from 6 and just finishing up Kindergarten. @fairytalemama - That's what I am hoping to do find a curriculum she enjoys so we will be ahead of the everyday math.
  19. I have too.. The bulk of the curriculum is supposed to be Scott Foresman with a little of Everyday Math... not sure what that means. However, I think all the schools around here are using Everyday math :( I am hoping to try and find a Math program that she likes that will keep me ahead of Everyday Math :) Does Singapore use manipulatives?
  20. Hi, I am new here and found the well-trained mind by accident. I was looking for ways to enrich my dd's education. The good news is I love her school, principal and teacher's and so does she. So onto the question :) I am trying to get my act together for Summer. She is enrolled in a variety of activities for fun (arts/soccer/swimming) but I wanted to work on academics. My plan was to work on reading and math for academics. For reading, I was planning on participating in the summer reading at the library and studying phonics using phonics pathways and some workbooks. For Math, I am a little lost. Next year, they are using a combination of Scott Foresman with a little of Everyday Mathematics. I want to get ahead of the game so I really want to find a curriculum that I could use at least through first grade. Also, she did need some extra help with money and patterns. I would appreciate any suggestions for curriculums and/or additional activities. Thanks, Tiffany
