  1. I reviewed the Holt and Oak Meadow (Glencoe) textbooks, in detail, as part of a research project in college. I have in my notes that both do a decent job of covering information, but do little to promote critical thinking about the issues. Holt does a better job of incorporating primary sources, but it is still a textbook.

Both are thoroughly secular. Of the two, I would pick Holt, though my preference would be a course based on primary sources.

  2. My SIL and I are planning a mini freezer cooking day tomorrow. I've done a few little things on my own, but never split anything with anyone else.

What are your tips and tricks, or dire warnings?

We'll have about 4 hours with no kids, so I'm hoping we can get a fair amount accomplished/

  3.

Cadillac Mountain is cool. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I remember, it's the first place in the US y can see the sun rise.

    I've heard that, too.

We loved Bar Harbor on our Honeymoon last year. It's very close to Acadia National Park and it has lots of delicious restaurants. There are plenty of things to do on the water (whale watching, boating, etc) but we'll have to do that if we ever go back.

  4. I got my stuff at Target and BBB. Watch out for things that are particularly "dorm" because I found that some things, particularly towels, were poor quality and I ended up replacing them. Target will have 2 main dorm sets, one more for girls, the other more for guys, and they will have lots of coordinating stuff in each color. I did get a lot of colorful bins and such there.

I second the suggestion of a mattress topper. They are worth their weight in gold!

  5. You can certainly use it, but it has the same issue as fresh-ground, whole-grain flour--only more so. As soon as whole grains are milled into flour, the oils inside are exposed to air, and they start to oxidize. This leads to loss of nutrition and to rancidity. Buying whole-wheat pastry flour just means that the grain was milled longer ago than something you'd mill yourself, and it's thus further along the road to rancidity.

I think I'd suggest milling your own and storing it in bags in the refrigerator or freezer. Then I'd make up your mixes without the flour component if you think they'll suffer from being cold (I think most wouldn't if the containers are dry).

This. My mom has a grain mill so I store my bag of wheat at her house and have them bring me a gallon bag of flour every few weeks. I keep it in my freezer to extend the life, otherwise it would probably be bad, or at least lose most of the "whole wheat advantage" by the time I would use it.

I really like this flour for cookies and pastry type things. I prefer a hard red for muffins and pancakes myself, but this is all I can get right now, so I use it for everything.

  6. I prefer kindle to nook as well (love my paperwhite kindle!). If you want to be able to do word processing and internet, you might want to consider a tablet with the kindle app (there may be a nook app too). You can do more on a tablet than even the kindle fire. For example, you can't access the google play store with the kidle fire, but you could on any android tablet. I have a samsung galaxy tab that is about the same size as my kindle, just a bit thicker and a few ounces heavier. You can also get keyboard accessories for most tablets if you wan to do word processing.

Can you access basic email on the paperwhite? The more I'm thinking about it, word processing is less of a priority, but being able to check email would still be nice.

  7. Lots of good things to think about here. Thanks for all of the replies!

It seems like the Kindle is the winner, I'm just not sure which kind. I need to weigh the benefits of reading in low light vs. outside. With a new baby, reading in low light might be the winner. I just don't know.

    Anyone else?

  8. Our Nook doesn't get used. But we use our Kindles a lot. I think the selection is better and less expensive for the Kindle. It also helps that we have Kindle apps on our Windows Phones.

You might also want to consider not getting a Fire if you are planning to do any reading outside. I use our non-tablet Kindle for that or I have to find a really shady area to avoid glare.

Thanks. The glare is a really good point. What is the difference between a non-tablet Kindle and the Fire?

  9. We are looking into buying one of these this summer. I want to be able to read without a baby tearing up my books ;) I would primarily use it for reading and email, with a small amount of word processing. Do you have the same book selections available? Is one more user friendly than the other?

Can you recommend one or the other? Why?

    Thanks so much!

  10. I am a 2012 homeschool graduate, and I have no regrets at all. I never wanted to go to ps or private school.

We did largely Classical education, and the only downside to that was being unprepared to take scantron tests in college. Other than that, I did well in college and enjoyed my experience. I went to a Christian college and had no trouble fitting in.

I fully intend to homeschool my children and I'm already getting excited about it :-)

  11. Congratulations! Boy or girl? (If you don't mind sharing.)

Babies are so much fun! Congratulations again!

Thanks! We actually don't know the gender. People either thing we're freaks or heroes for not finding out :).

I'm pretty happy with what we got done yesterday. I'll probably play around with it online or go back by myself and change a few things, but we got the basics.

I don't love the gender neutral clothes or blankets, so I didn't register for much. If we have a boy, we're set with all kinds of hand-me-downs from my mom, aunt, and SIL. If it's a girl, my mom, MIL and grandmother will have to be restrained in the gift buying ;) . We haven't had a girl on either side of the family in a loooong time.

  12. I'm going today to set up a Baby registry. I've been putting it off because I'm anti "stuff,'" but we have a shower scheduled now, and I am getting more excited :-)

What are some essentials that I might not think of? Or something that seems like an essential that I can live without?

I have a fairly good idea, and I'm taking my mom ( and her 6 month old ;) ) with me, but I'd love to hear your suggestions.

    Thanks!

  13. My family had a lot of people over all growing up, and someone my age was hit or miss. Even when there were people my age, that didn't mean we got along. Of course, I would always try to hang out with the adults anyway :-)

For my 16th birthday party, I invited 8-10 adult women for a tea party. They were, and still are, much closer friends than anyone my age.

  14. I did use Quine for four years. I did Starting Points in 8th, then the rest in 10-12th. I did it in a structured homeschool class setting for 11th and 12th. During those years we took Rhetoric and History as separate classes. Quine covers some great things, and Starting Points was probably the best year. I did have some holes in literature at the end of high school. Quine has a lot of reading, but it does relatively little lit analysis because the focus is on worldview.

I'm currently working in the homeschool program that still uses Quine and they are still trying to fill in the holes.

My mom is now using TOG for the rest of the family and feels that it covers more bases.

    Hope that helps!
