  1. Hi,

I am an Awana leader!

I do agree with a previous poster about the recommended group size for handbook time being around 5 kids. Most churches do in fact have more than one adult present per group of five. (In our case, we use two large rooms for two of our groups - but always a minimum of 3-4 adults present). We are fortunate, that we average 1 person for every 3 kids (again this is not unsupervised). This gives us the extra time to help a child work on a verse as necessary. With our particular group of Sparks, we find that many of them do need that additional help to work on a verse.

Awana is a great program. Before you pull your son, I would encourage you to go and observe in this larger church at least one time. It could be just hectic one of those first few nights. (Believe me that leader with 13 kids KNOWS it was not a perfect situation). If after a visit, you may choose to look for another church with a smaller program. Most churches have no problem allowing a parent to sit in with the child. Some will allow you to visit without the child if you contact them ahead of time.

I hope you and your family will find a pleasant solution and that your son would come to enjoy all that Awana can offer him. If you would like to pm me, please feel free to do so.

    Blessings,

    Pam

  2. Hi,

Sometimes the Betty Lukens materials show up on the used homeschool boards (usually just the felts though).

Feltboards can be fairly pricey, but with a small amount of effort and very little money, you could make the felt board. You could use cardboard or a very thin wood (paneling, scrap of linoleum, etc) The felt can be purchased very inexpensively at Wal-mart. You could then use either a heavy duty glue or a staple gun depending upon size and material used. One of my smaller ones is made of cardboard and we structured it so that it has flaps and reinforcements on the bottome so that it stands up and folds down flat.

I hope this helps and that you find what you are looking for.

    Blessings,

    Pam

Wow! This is terrific. I work in a library and the school kids come over weekly. I can use some of these ideas.

  4. It is admirable you desire to work for such an organization!

I would guess that the requirements would be different for each agency/group.

You might try contacting your local child services office (usually through the county) - maybe they can recommend some organizations. Sometimes in the yellow pages of your phone book under "service organizations" or "childlren's services" you may find a suitable group. Also, some phone books list public service agencies in the beginning.

    Good luck!

  5. :iagree:

with the other posters about school supplies, phone, fast food, etc.

If the family has any religious preferences, they may wish to have a replacement Bible, etc.

This may sound silly, but if there are girls they may appreciate some "simple" things like hair barrettes. I know this is not a "need" but it is important to a girl! Fancy stuff like that will be the last things they are purchasing as they focus on more urgent needs.

Maybe if they are staying in a motel - perhaps a few people could chip in to pay a few nights (if it isn't covered by insurance - even then it may take a while to get a claim paid)

    I will pray for them.

    Pam

  6. They really are pretty fast in my experience. You can do a phone or online order (faster than mail). If you do phone, you can do "check by phone" or credit card. Online of course you can do credit card.

I can understand your concern about the time though, the big first day of school starts and the books aren't here yet........

  7. Hi,

I can understand about sending out a lot of books when you first sign up - that happened to me as well - but not so many as yours.

I am new also to paperback swap and still learning the various procedures. But I did learn how to remove some/all of my books listed if necessary. Sign in, click on "My Account" then "bookshelf" they will list all your titles. You can check mark any you want to remove or vacation hold, etc. You can also create a wish list of titles you are seeking.

  8. Hi,

Have you used either of these? I purchased a mini "kit" of algebra tiles and brief teacher book. I haven't started it yet. I am thinking I will want a companion workbook for additional practice. There are a few teaching books and/or workbooks out there. I have also seen another product called Algebits. There appears to be less info about this though.

    Thanks!

    Pam

  9. So glad it worked out with the Nature Center for you.

On two separate occasions we also were the recipients of a squirrel falling from his nest 50ft up. Both times we contacted the wildlife rescue organization (about an hour away). Both times they took the animal and nursed them back to health.

Unfortunately, the first one did not make it. But the second one - that is another story. It is the policy of the organization that when possible, they will return the animal to its original habitat. So one day we got this call that they wanted to bring it back out. They came over with him in a cage and we all gathered outside as the lady released him into the wild on our property. It was beyond words. To this day, dh is convinced he can pick out that squirrel from all the others leaping around from pine tree to pine tree!

  10. Sounds like you are going to have a fun year for science! I love the flexibility! I have enjoyed reading over the previous suggestions. My dd is a bit older, so we have chosen a curriculum this year.

Here a a couple of sites you may find helpful:

www.donnayoung.org (lots of recording keeping and other various forms for scheduling and lab results)

www.homeschoolshare.com (lots of notebooking/lapbooking type pages for free to print out)

    Have a wonderful journey!

  11. Hi,

I am looking for a devotional book for a young lady (almost 19) for her birthday. She is a Christian who lives at home and attends community college.

I have looked over some teen devotionals and found them to be too young, and many of the ladies editions are often directed to a wife and or mother.

I recently received a Beth Moore devotional which I am enjoying, so I am possibly considering one of hers. I am open to suggestion. I really prefer one directed to females if possible in a gift book (hardback, maybe a padded cover, ribbon, etc) - one that would encourage her and deepen her walk.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you,

    Pam

  12. My teacher binder is similar to yours. I also have a couple additional tabs. I have one for the report cards/attendance sheets. The attendance sheets are three hole punched, but I put the report cards in a page protecter (or you could put it near the tab for each child).

When I am teaching a year of high school, I also use a tab to keep track of all work for transcript purposes.

If I have a program(s) with a small answer key, I remove them from the book. I place them in page protectors and they are also placed behind a tab in the binder.

I also have a tab for future items I may someday wish to buy - or just ideas.

I too agree with the idea of the 36 weeks! I have used Sonlight and WP, and I love the breakdown!

    Pam
