  1. My son was accepted provisionally at Cal State Long Beach, but I haven't sent his final transcript yet. I'm assuming, if they are going to cause trouble, that's when the trouble will happen.

My son is torn between CSULB and a local private university. He wants to study engineering; the private university only offers a 2/2 and 3/2 program, so he will have to transfer if he goes there. He is attending some classes with a friend tomorrow at CSULB. If he decides to attend CSULB, I'll be sure to post what happens with his transcript.

We homeschool through a PSP. He has no AP classes, no SAT subject tests, and no CC classes. He did pass three CLEP exams and scored a 31 on the ACT.  CSULB was always a back-up school. I'm very surprised it became one of his top choices. Maybe we would have made more of an effort to meet the A-G requirements.

  2. I'd go with kids that age, as long as they were on board with it. Yes, I'd get a 2-day park hopper pass.

The price quoted by Khselee might be for southern California residents only. Disneyland might check your zip codes upon entrance. Costco usually has deals here. I don't think they are for residents only, though I do think they are longer than two day passes.

  3. Chemistry: Apologia with Red Wagon Tutorials DVD and Landry Lab Intensive

    Precalculus: Still deciding

    Bible: Precept Bible study (.5)

English: Potter's School Research Writing (first semester) and Science Fiction Literature (second semester)

American History: Sonlight Core 100 with REA Test Prep book(s) and CLEP test(s)

    PE (.5)

    Electives: No idea yet!

    ACT and/or SAT test prep

Extracurricular: finish up any lingering Eagle rank stuff. Hopefully, he'll be done by August.

  4. Thank you for your response. Now I need to have my son do the placement test. He did the grammar, no problem, but he finds the prospect of writing without the verb be a bit daunting  :001_rolleyes:.

Does the teacher provide a lot of feedback during the writing process? My ds was enrolled in a Literature and Composition class, where his essays were only graded and he did not get tons of feedback.

Unlike the earlier English classes, the papers do not go through multiple drafts. According to my son, some weeks the students have peer reviews on their papers. When the teacher returns the paper, she will give comments and feedback. She leaves comments in the body of the paper as well as two separate grade breakdowns for grammar issues and style. The class also includes some grammar with optional grammar assignments.

I have to say, it takes her 2-3 weeks to return the papers. She's not as reliable with that as some of the other English teachers.

  5.

It is SO hard to know what to do.  I think part of the problem is that our children are still growing fast at this age.  Really fast.  They can't always verbalize their goals and worries in a way that helps us help them to make good decisions for themselves.  Their growth rate depends to some extent on their situation and experiences.  So we are stuck trying to hit a target that is moving at a variable rate while possibly missing some key information, like what the target really is.

This really struck me, and it's exactly how I feel.

((hugs)) I'm glad we're all in this together!

  6. Dd2 just heard -- she got into Eastman!!!!! All of the details are unknown, but she got a phone call from a prof telling her the good news! I'll wait to post it on the official list until we know all the details..... but I'm proud of my girl!

Awesome news! I hope the finances work out.

    What an accomplishment! Congrats!

(This from the bassoonist who was waitlisted at Eastman. . . . ;) )

I was a bassoonist waitlisted at Eastman, too. We have an elite club here. :)

I really enjoyed my audition and the school when I visited there.....back in the day.

  7. Farmgirl, may I ask what the 'hiccup' was? This is my fear -- that something will go wrong with the final transcript and they'll say, when it's far too late to go to any other schools, "Wait a minute -- he's homeschooled?!? We take it back!"

I've heard of some schools (not necessarily CSU/UC) that want the transcript notarized, etc. ... UCSD says something on their website about how homeschooled students must "receive a high-school diploma, a GED, or certificate of proficiency." Of course my son will have a diploma, but I'll issue it myself ...

Can I just print out my transcript, sign it, stick it in an envelope, and mail it? Will they accept it?

Thanks so much for any advice and btdt experience!

I'd love to know about the hiccup also.

  8. Thanks for sharing, Running the race. Very interesting! And Congrats to your son

Have/had any other homeschoolers you know IRL had luck with CSULB before?

I know other homeschoolers who have attended CSULB, but they might have technically graduated from a private school with recognized A-G requirements. I could find out.

Edited to add: The family I know DID fulfill the A-G requirements. One graduated from a charter school and the second one graduated from a school with a brick and mortar campus.

  9. My son was admitted to Cal State Long Beach with a fairly high ACT score, no AP, no community college classes, and the classes I input from our transcript. They are not A-G approved. We'll see what happens when we submit the final transcript. I hadn't thought about that.

CSULB is not near his top choice right now, but you never know.

  10. I am not looking forward to receiving the aid packages. I have a pretty good idea of what the 4 schools will offer and I don't look forward to helping ds choose between the two least desired but most financially viable options. It stinks. I think I may run away to Austrailia.

I feel your pain. Without receiving a tuition exchange, we are left with less desirable options.
