  1. I agree with everyone else on sending her home when she doesn't obey. She will learn quickly.

However, I have to say I don't see any disrespect in offering a spare swimsuit. Now if she offered, Mrs Deb said "thank you, but Joy won't be able to do water play today," and Kay kept arguing about it or pressing for another reason, I could see it being annoying. But to offer a solution to a stated problem? (Joy can not play because she left her suit at home) How is that disrespectful?

Disclaimer: I would have let my kid borrow the swimsuit. I see no problem with changing your mind based on new information and finding a way to make it work. But even if I wouldnt allow it, I still wouldn't be offended by the generous offer.

  2. Ah. Then for Forbidden Journey go in through the exit to skip the line, and do the castle tour separately. They have a separate lane in the line for people who aren't going on the ride but want to see the castle. You see everything except the herbology greenhouse. We did that with an elderly relative. You just go to the line entrance and tell the staff person you only want the castle tour.

Edit: it's better to do it that way, because when you're in the ride line you have to move at the pace of the line so sometimes you rush past things you'd like to see and sometimes you're stuck for awhile in a not very interesting spot. In the tour lane you can stop whenever you want to look at something.

    Thanks!

  3. It's not an option -- Express passes aren't valid for Forbidden Journey or Escape from Gringotts.

We don't actually have an express pass. We are going on a Make-a-Wish trip, so for rides that don't have express passes they will take us through the exit. But I'm wondering if those are lines it's more fun to wait through than to skip.

  4. no it doesn't. All he has to do is have a third person present. Even doctors have to do that.

Actually no, they don't unless they are examining private parts. My OB didn't call in a nurse unless I was getting naked. We could talk privately in his office with no issues.

So unless the businessman is planning on a very interesting dinner, there really should not be a need for a chaperone.

  5. American parents. In the past year, this has become more of a pet peeve, as I've seen more while substitute teaching. The parents whine about homework, about drill worksheets. The parents call or email to explain why the child hasn't done the homework/studied for the test because the family had better things to do or the parent was too tired to make him do it. I am not kidding. I am realizing that many, many families out there - more than when I was growing up - aren't making education their children's number one priority.

As a parent who despises homework and has more than once sent a note to the teacher saying we didn't do the homework because we had other plans, I think the implication that I dont value my xhild's education is ridiculous. They are at school for 8 hours every day. I get them there on time with plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast. After school we are happy to drill some math facts, read aloud, or practice spelling words. But after 20-30 minutes of thay, we are done. Children need time to PLAY! They need to go outside, read for fun, build thinngs, do art, sit and rest, etc. We also need time as a family to hike, bike, and discuss topics outside of the limited education they are getting at school. As a parent (and a classroom teacher, btw), I deeply resent teachers and schools who believe our whole lives should be consumed with homework. And don't even get me started on spring break/Christmas homework packets!

  6. $135 for four lessons sounds insane to me, especially when unemployed. But so does a $500 electric bill and $350/month for an extra-curricular. So I guess if you have the money set aside and are 100% sure your husband will get a job and you wont need that money for food/rent, you might as well do it.

  7. I agree. We lived in Thailand for three years and only went to Bangkok when absolutely necessary. The southern beaches are beautiful (especially if you can get away from the tourist traps), and the northern villages are great. We lived in Chiang Mai and absolutely loved it.

You don't need any extra vaccines.

  8. I decided I wouldn't go back because it seems wrong to me. Employees have taxes based on federal minimum wage, but employers are paying significantly less and it's really fast food, not a restaurant that relies heavily on "service."

This thing about the taxes is a common misconception that some servers like to propagate. You do not get taxes on more than you make. ever. Evem at a regular restaurant like Olive Garden.

Every day you have to fill out a form saying how much you made in tips. That way the employer can withhold taxes and SS on that amount. But if for some reason your average for a pay period ends up less than minimum wage, the employer is legally required to make up the difference.

No one pays taxes on minimum wage but gets paid less. Tips are legally considered income, so you have to pay taxes on them, even though a lot of servers under-report their tips to get out of the taxes.

  9. This must depend on the location. mybsister and I both worked at Sonic through high school and they paid minimum wage. Add to that the fact that some people tipped like a restaurant and most at least left the change to make an even dollar, and we made really good money.

I never felt entitled to the tips, though, because we really didn't do much more than a McDonald's cashier.

    I don't tip at Sonic.

  10. Never mind. Delivery now says rescheduled for 27th. Boo. This is the one thing DD actually said she wanted. She'll like the other things we picked, but I'm bummed this one won't get here.

Apparently Amazon said "shipped" yesterday at 11am, but that just meant they had sent the info to UPS. They didn't actually get the package to UPS until tonight at 6:30pm. And yet all this time they were telling me it was on time for delivery tonight at 8.

It's doubly maddening because it originated about 30 minutes from my house. I could have picked it up!

  11. Amazon says the carrier is UPSN (is that the same as UPS?). It says it is "on time" and will be delivered today by 8pm. It is currently 9:52pm and it hasn't arrived. Would you expect that it is still going to come late tonight, or not until tomorrow? Trying to decide whether to wait up...

  12. He has been my step son for over 6 years. He has always spent 45-an hour in the bathroom pooping.

So it is not some new thing. And I am not going to let it go because there are things to do and wasting a couple hours a day in the bathroom is ridiculous.

If he has been taking this long since age 9, please consider that he might just need that long. Some people do, and shaming him for it would be really inappropriate if that's the case.

  13. I am pretty sure they used a vein in my hand to inject the contrast. Can't really remember though.

I will share a weird thing about contrast, which may be totally idiosyncratic but really bothered me and I wish I'd known about it before.

I could feel the contrast move around my body (or I imagined I did), and it made me feel as if I'd wet myself. I hadn't. It was just a sensation. But it was an awful feeling. Because I was worried about it all through the scan. Nobody has ever mentioned that to me before or since, so it could entirely be a 'just me' thing...but yeah, nothing hurts but to me the contrast feels extremely strange.

Just FYI. You probably won't feel a thing and be thinking I'm a nutcase after.

That's actually pretty common. They warned DD about it before her scan.

  14. In DFW you have nothing to worry about. Not only has homeschooling been commonplace for many years now, there are gobs of private and charter schools that run on a different schedule from the public schools. No one is going to give a second look to a kid playing outside on a school day. Unless they are out most of the day every day, in which case your closest neighbors might wonder. But even then I doubt it. I was homeschooled in Duncanville and even then (20-30 years ago) we wandered the neighborhood and even walked to the grocery store by ourselves during the day with no problems.

  15. I wouldn't get it, but for different reasons than mentioned above. I find it highly unlikely that a student in CC Spanish classes (so the first two years) would be able to get through a textbook written in Spanish. Add to that the fact that she isn't interested in the topic and doesn't like gifts...nope.

Unless she collects autographed books from favorite authors. In that case, I'd agree with a PP to wait until she isn't his student and then get it.
