  1. With my DD all I had to do was sing a few songs and pat her on the back for 15-20 mins and she was out for the night. With my DS? Not so much. :(

He is 7yo, and going to bed is a struggle ever. single. freaking. night. He doesn't throw tantrums, he just comes down the hallway every 3-5 minutes no matter what.

I co-slept with him until he was 5yrs, and finally moved him out into his own bed in a desperate attempt to hold on to my sanity. This child can NOT be alone in a room by himself. And he talks to me non-stop, 24 hrs a day....even in his sleep! Every night he ends up crawling into bed with us.

DS doesn't fall asleep early or easily. We've tried everything...soothing music, reading in bed, Supper Nanny techniques...ad infinitum. My DH goes to sleep early, around 10p, and I'm usually up to 12p. Mostly because I'm so desperate for ALONE TIME that I'll forgo sleep to get it. DS usually doesn't fall asleep until 11p, even when he is desperately tired. Hubby and I rarely ever have time alone together. :banghead:

My goal is to have peace and quite for DH and I around 9p most night. I've gotten to the point that as long as he is IN BED, DS can have his light on, play in his room, listen to books on tape, etc. as long as he's not coming down the hallway. Usually by the time he finally falls asleep, my DD is demanding attention. (She's 21 and still living at home while going to college. The only time I ever see her is in the middle of the night. If I don't talk to her then, I'll never know what's going on. *sigh*)

  2. I've found this thread to be very interesting. When I first started using TOG I heard many of the same comments; it's too expensive, not made for youngers, etc. While I agree with most of what Marie and Tina have said, I would like to add a comment based on my personal experience.

TOG is a wonderful program even if you "only" have one child. Yep, it's expensive. But if you have an only child there is rarely going to be ANY curriculum that you're going to get same mileage out of like you can TOG.

My DD was 7th/8th grade when I bought my first year plan. Classic was the only choice and wasn't even called Classic back then. *lol* I ended up purchasing all four years and it's one of the few curriculum purchases that I ever actually used.

When my DD was 14yrs old, we were blessed to have another child, my DS. DD is now 21 and DS is 6yrs old. Basically, I have two only children. :tongue_smilie: Almost from the moment he was born I knew I was going to continue using TOG in our homeschool. Only now, I'm purchasing the Redesigned DE and print version. Still pricey, but still just as great for my LG student as it was for my Dialected DD when I first dipped my toes in the TOG pool.

In my experience, TOG has been a great choice for only children, as well as littles.

  3. Does it have to be a board game, or will they consider card games too?

We are certified board game freaks at our house. *lol* I love going to Goodwill and seeing what kinds of games have been donated each week. Most of the time it's junk, but we find treasures often enough to keep looking!

Here is a list of our favorites that we play with our 6yr old. Note: most games we play are just him and us (parents), and sometimes our older daughter (21) if she's home. He doesn't play board games with other kids very often. Also he started KILLING us at UNO when he was 4 yrs old, so I don't know if most 6yr old like the games he likes. *lol*

    Card Games:

    1. Uno in any flavor; Spin, Attack, Flash, etc.

    2. Hit the Deck

    3. Swap (more players the better)

    4. Left, Right, Center (dice and chips game)

    5. Swipe (similar to LRC above, but with a twist)

    6. Set

    7. Blink (really fun and fast!)

    Board Games:

    1. Sequence (he's still trying to figure this one out)

    2. Chess (No Stress Chess is a great way to learn)

    3. Clue Jr (the one with the cake)

    4. Blockus

    5. 100 Really Dumb Things (really, it's a game!)

    6. Mythbusters "Hit the Target"

    7. Lifestories (non-competitive, everyone wins)

    8. Battleship (classic)

    9. Any and all of the new Lego games

Other: Don't qualify as board or card games

    1. Hyperdash (fun inside and out)

    2. Hyperjump

    3. Speed Stacks cups

    4. Boochie (play inside or outside)

    Hope this helps! :001_smile:

  4. Hi, my name is Jennifer and I live in McKinney.

I am currently homeschooling my 6yr old son. My kids are 14 yrs apart, so after DD graduated I kinda fell out of the homeschool "scene." Now that I'm homeschooling again, I would like to hook up with other homeschool families in the area.

I'm not necessary looking for a co-op (although I keep an open mind), or hs informational meetings since I have quite a few years under my belt. But what I'd really love is to meet and make friends with fellow homeschoolers.

Looking forward to making new friends! :grouphug:
