  1. Thanks for answering my question! Is there any chance of adding an Intro to Rhetoric earlier in the day on the Monday/Wednesday schedule? Unfortunately we are unable to do any of the sections listed due to other activities.

I feel like the delayed schedule might not be as helpful to my son. I think he'd benefit from being able to ask questions during the class time and hear the interactions of the other student's thoughts. (I'm assuming that will happen in this style of class?)

  2. Could someone answer my question about placing my son? He is 9th grade, late/struggling reader, did about half of WWS1 in 7th, then did IEW at co-op, then stopped and did a year of Write at Home High School level 1 in 8th grade. He did fairly well (all 4's and 5's on scoring) but I know he struggles with brainstorming and organizing his thoughts. Often when I help him, it's like he has trouble formulating his sentences into a cohesive paragraph. To be honest, we've so long worked on reading skills that writing has not been a priority. But this year I really want it to be! He's a science- minded, physical activities kid- not humanities. I don't want to overwhelm him, but I do want to challenge him

I have him signed up for Expository 2, but was just looking at Intro to Rhetoric and now I'm not sure whether we are in the right class. There is no prereq for Intro to Rhetoric, but there is for Expository 2. So I'm just unsure.  I really want to outsource this for him, but I don't want to end up having to help him to such a large degree that I could have just taught the class myself! KWIM? Could someone help?

    Thanks,

    Tiffany

  3. Well, the university wasn't much help to guide us other than say both of them are acceptable and told me what credits would transfer. Our cc has an agreement with them so it isn't too hard.

And, we're trying to figure out what classes he should take for the next 3 years of high school. He could potentially finish all his engineering prereq's or even get close to finishing an AA degree by the time he graduates. So he can't really just go straight to university now.

  4. My son is  going into 10th grade, but is starting to DE at the local community college this year (Spanish for the fall). He wants to be an engineer that "designs and builds parts for airplanes." I'm guessing that's mechanical with a specialty in aerospace. He plans to be at the community college and then hopefully transfer to University of Maryland.

So here's my question. The advisor at the cc college suggested that he should get a 2yr degree in Physics or Math instead of just taking his engineering prereq's there. I've also heard this from another family who has a child planning to get a physics AA and transfer to UMD for Mechanical Engineering.

However I've also heard that it is better to just go straight to the university and not get a degree first because the financial aid will not be as good. (We NEED financial aid.)

Could anyone else offer their opinions?  2 year AA degree first (and which one?), or just get Engineering prereq's at the cc?  I only know 1 other engineer so this is hard for me to ask around in person.

    Thanks!

  5. My son is getting ready to start 10th grade, wants to go into engineering, and is chomping at the bit to go to the local community college to get ahead. Very self motivated.

Here's my dilemma. I want him to be VERY prepared with his math. He is a semester "Off" schedule, meaning he'll be finishing algebra 2 this fall. I can either have him take Derek Owens' Precalc class online (he's used DO for Geom and Alg 2 and it works great) OR take College Alg in the spring at the community college. The advisor at the college says he should take the college alg, but I also know there are financial gains for bringing in new students so I don't fully trust his advice.

So what advice would you give? (He'll be taking Spanish 1 at the cc in the fall, so by spring he'll be used to the campus/college workload.)

    Thanks,

    Tiffany

  7. I was recommended the book Anatomy and Physiology for Health Professionals along with the online quizzing and reviews from the publisher. I am wondering if anyone has used this for high school A&P and what you thought of it? I have a daughter headed for nursing so it needs to be a good, solid introduction for her.

Otherwise  all I can find is Apologia's Advanced Biology, of which I am not a huge fan of the writing style.

So anyone have experience with the book?

  8. Plan A was to take English with Laurel Tree. Now that is cancelled.

Plan B was to take Honors English 2 with Blue Tent. He is 3rd on the waitlist...I'm thinking the odds of getting in are low...

    Plan C???? I don't have a plan C! Can anyone help?

Here's the rest of my brain fuzzies...

The 2 co-ops in my area are not having a high school writing class this year...grrr..

I am a little overwhelmed by TPS's website and don't know how to figure out where/how to place him...

He did Write at Home High School level 2 last year. He got all perfect scores in his assignments, however I'm not super confident that his scores reflect his writing ability. He's decent but not that good! Or maybe I'm just cynical and am too demanding...

I just really wanted something tried and true with lots of veteran moms/students saying that their kids were well prepared for college level English. This will probably be his last year at home for English, then he'll DE at the college.

    Help anyone?

  9. Ok, so we started the year with my daughter as a sophomore. She was held back a grade when she was little due to being a late bloomer,  but now at age 16 is fully caught up and then some. So a few weeks ago we were going through her transcript since she dual enrolled this past semester and I realized that I have only 3-4 credits left for her to do. So she asked if she could be considered a Junior since she is actually the age for it, has all the credits for it, all her friends are a grade older, and she is going to be mostly dual enrolling for the rest of her credits....

I'm fine with it and I know she's totally ready, but SHEESH! I'm not prepared! In my head she had 2 years before I needed to think about graduation, but now I feel like I'm not ready!

So, what kinds of things do I need to be thinking about as we suddenly finish up her junior year.  Testing, when? Life skills I should finalize? College info? (She's going to CC for nursing but is thinking about only doing her prereq's there and transfering to a state school) Scholarships?

Thanks for helping a frazzled momma!

  10. Ok, so my 10 yo (4th grade) son has finished all his phonics(OPGTTW), he's doing Rod and Staff spelling 4, Vocab from Class. Roots, CLE Language arts and reads from multiple science/hist/lit selections I pull from our shelves. He also reads about a page of one of his books aloud to me. (My Side of the Mountain, Old Yeller, are two he's reading now..)

So what's next? I should have this down by now since he's my 4th, but my older three I did a lousy job with phonics, so they all had reading issues that we've been remediating. I swore I wouldn't do that to my 4th, but now that he's ready really well, I'm not sure what I should do to increase his reading abilities. (Harder vocab, more complex sentences, etc).  Do we just continue to read aloud- me helping him through progressively harder vocab pronunciations and definitions? Or should I be doing something else?

  11. No, the exercises are strictly for the student to try on their own and check according to answers in the back. The teacher never sees them. And, apparently I didn't either! LOL I don't think they are "voluntary" according to the instructor, but my son seems to feel they are a waste of time if he is doing well on the homework and tests.

  12. My almost 15yo son is doing Derek Owens' Geometry class. I just recently realized that he isn't doing any of the exercises assigned.

He watches the lectures, takes notes, looks at the book if he gets stuck on a concept, has contacted the instructor about 3-4 times since the beginning of the year just to see if he is logically thinking through his proofs, and does all the homework and tests. He has a solid A grade (aces almost every hw assignment), I think a 95% overall.

He is a slow but thorough worker and he spends 1-1 1/2 hrs a day getting through the videos and homework. I can't even imagine how long it would take him to do 40 extra problems in the exercises. So what do you think? Is this ok since he is doing well? Or is it really going to hurt him somehow?

  13. Does anyone have (or know someone who does) the Reading Horizons program on discs that they would be willing to sell? I am desperately needing to use this but the company now only offers online use. Due to where we live we don't have availability for him to use it via the internet. I have looked and looked for these discs, but with no success. So I thought I would just ask here as a last ditch effort...

    THanks,

    Tiffany

  14. DD is 16 and has been planning on going into nursing in the future.

However, she has been volunteering at a local non-profit as a mentor for children of immigrant families whose parents don't speak English. The mentors are teens who help the kids with their homework since their parents are unable to.

She absolutely LOVES it. When she talks about nursing it is very matter of fact, but when she talks about mentoring and working with underprivileged people (adults or children, she's not picky)  or situations like that, she oozes with passion....

So, I'm trying to help her see that nursing might not be her calling. She says she doesn't want to be a teacher AT ALL. So that's out. Doesn't want to be a psychologist because of too much schooling...hmmm...

Does anyone have any ideas what kind of major one would take in college or what kind of jobs she could do in that kind of situation? I don't have much experience with this field or even what is out there...

  15. Well, it wasn't that they weren't doing well, it was more that "I" felt it was just nitpicky facts that were missing the big picture. So many trivial details, dates and unimportant facts to be spending precious time learning when they can be easily looked up. I think I was just wanting more thought questions or big picture questions....Maybe I'm just having a hard time adjusting to the textbook approach...

Your points are well taken though... I'm thinking....
