The issue is not the common core. It is that schools, textbooks, and the entire political arena are trying to quantify the unquantifiable. Good teaching isn't testable. So my husband and I both have major issue with the massive CC push sucking all life out of the classroom, but it has no effect on homeschooling unless you are locking your kid in a closet.
Just teach your kids. Common Core will be replaced with some other buzzword in five years anyway. People will flip out then too. They have every other time in the last fifteen years, no reason for our level of mindless panic to change now.
Agree with this too. I went through the standard and don't find anything wrong with it. But when I open the textbook and what the teachers sent home. It really drove me to the wall.

opinion :)
.
2) Adopted way too quickly. The teachers have very little training. The schools are overwhelmed.
.
This especially. NY adopted last year and the standardized test soon align with common core last year. A lot complaint about the gap that the teacher was not able to filled from September to march (they gave the test in March.. If I remember right) . A lot topics were not told a year prior and the teacher has to quickly get the kids up to speed and then new topics. It just was not enough time.

Although that is a pretty depressing chart you posted.
i don't believe low income causes low score. . DH's father is a construction worker didn't even grad from high school. Mom is stay home Mom. DH almost got perfect score on GRE (never heard him brag about SAT but he did got full ride scholarship due to merit other than the one year he just transfered). that is why I feel this BS.

I'm still looking, but I see no geometry, and this is from the CB:
Anyone want to bet that geometry winds its way out of the CC standards in short order? Isn't dropping geometry from the SAT a *huge* *huge* change? I don't see it being discussed anywhere yet.
really do not like how it sounds. i use a lot geomtry at work. it gonna be a disater 10 yrs from now... the airplane might have 2 wings with different size. missile might hit the wrong spot

Semi integrated. We did AOPS intro algebra 1st and SM NEM 1-2 which covers most geometry. We are doing AOPS intermediate algebra and and plan to do AOPS geometry later

Wow. Very interesting thread. I consider my son math bright.....doing algebra 1 now as an 8th grader. I didn't realize he was far behind.
Those type thread attracts outliers. I won't worry about it. In most PS, algebra in 8th is accelerated.

Wow.. That is unfortunate if they do discontinue. Good I bought ahead

Cogat is not iq test but more of a performance test.

DS read those and loved it and books he also loves are the dark is rising series, and the Enders' game. he loves the "hatchet" but not the books after that.

I believe is ch 13 but some smart lady here recommended to finish chap 14 before going into geometry and that was what we did.

I do not mention about my kids accomplishment to any friends who have kids about my kids' age. I learned that from experience. It never turn out good. I do talk about my kids with people who also have high ability and already have high achievement. People who has kids in Harvard, Cornell and Columbia..etc. I am lucky that I know quite a few. They went through what I went through and I found their advises are helpful. I don't find a common point talking about my kids with most people so I don't find it necessary even to mention what my kids are doing.
I guess.. The question is.. You know your kids are bright. why do you find it necessary to talk about it?
Just a side note. If you do want to talk about your accelerated kids, talk about them on accelerated board.

We used c rod. But what I found worked like a charm is when I ask my DD, if she have 7 candies and her brother has 5, how many her brother has less than her? Real life experience works a lot better than just numbers

I grew up in a apartment that was about 700 sq-ft. It was enough space For a family of 4. I never felt it was small

I have a math talented DS. ( his public school tested him at 99.99 percentile) he does AOPS. He doesn't love it. By all account, he does it simply because he is good with math. I don't consider him a good fit. We do it because I can 't find anything else (other than NEM which we use as supplement) that provides a solid foundation like AOPS
I have another DD who's is good in math. Nowhere to be as talented as DS, but she loves math and enjoys challenges. she is all about show off and want to compete with DS. I know she will be much better fit with AOPS when she at that level. Might not be a young 8 like DS, but when she is ready, she will be a better fit

I wrote and drew in his notebook 3 apples and 3 oranges. The ratio is 3 apples :3 oranges. You can reduce that to 1:1. There are 3 apples out of six fruits. The fraction is 3 apples out of 6 pieces of fruit, you can reduce that to 1/3.
He didn't understand it. .
With both my kids, I founds sometimes they need to sleep on a new concept. If they don't get it after try couple times, go on next chapter, finish next chapter then come back. Most of time, they pick up right away when we circle back. .. Just a thought.

Did he think it is a bad thing? DD knows very well what level she reads and what grade of math she does. It never bothers her. She asked once, I simply said because you already knows how to do those. She had no problem with it

hooked on phonic.
it is easy to teach, has all elements. Cd, computer and come with a set of hilarious books that my DD wanted to read again and again

DS will be 10 and after schooler
Math- AOPS finishing intermediate algebra and may start pre Calculus
Science - really gonna start algebra based physics. We planned to do this year,.. Never happened
Vocaburary - word wise
Read whatever he want to read
Violin- orchestra
DD will be 6 also afterschooler
Math - SM 4b/5a text IP/CWP 3.. We just start 4a.. And going to start IP 3.. Not sure how that gonna work.. We might go a lot slower than planned.
RSO - earth
Vocaburary - word wise
Read whatever she feels like.
Violin
DS's plan is really the best scenario. He had a such busy schedule this year we ended up only did about half what we planned. and his tennis coach wants him to compete next year. It really gonna be wild.Stupid me didn't mention the asynchronous. DS is weak in grammer and writing... I wonder where did that come from. I didn't do much about those and not plan to. 1. I can't.. I am weak in grammer and writing . 2. since he is afterschooler, I will leave those to his teacher. DD is weak in fine motor skill. There is also nothing I can do with it, She like lego and draw, So I will just make sure she has lot of those

DS did SM IP, CWP 6 along with key to algebra b4 the AOPS algebra, that seems worked well.

I was thinking the same yesterday last night when they posted a guy and a lady. People surrounding them look like they are watching a show.
